Vallon got up. He paid his bill; lighted a cigarette. He thought the cigarette tasted like brown paper. He went out; got into his car and drove back to the office. He went into Chennault's room; sat at the desk; rang for Marvin.
When Marvin came in he said: "I've had a report on Hipper's movements after he left here yesterday, Mr. Vallon. He— "
Vallon interrupted. "That's all right, Marvin... I know where Hipper went." He went on: "You've got a good memory, haven't you? There's damned little you forget. Take your mind back to last Tuesday— the day before Joe Chennault died. What happened around here?"
