Chapter 3: Dreams and Whispers Lyra's POV Three days had never felt so impossibly long and terrifyingly short at the same time. I sat on my narrow bed in the servants' quarters, staring at the simple wooden box Kael had sent that morning. Inside, wrapped in midnight blue silk, lay a dress that probably cost more than I'd see in a lifetime. The fabric seemed to shimmer with its own light, like captured starshine. A dress fit for a Luna. My fingers trembled as I touched the delicate material. In three hours, I would wear this dress. In three hours, I would stand before the entire pack and become something I'd never dared dream of being. The thought should have filled me with joy, but instead, it sat heavy in my stomach like a stone. "Lyra?" A soft knock interrupted my spiraling thoughts. "May I come in?" I recognized the voice of Elena, one of the few pack members who'd ever shown me genuine kindness. She was older, maybe forty, with graying brown hair and eyes that had seen too much sorrow. Her own mate had died in a territorial dispute years ago, leaving her to raise their son alone. "Of course," I called, hastily closing the box. Elena entered, carrying a tray with tea and what looked like her famous honey cakes. She took one look at my face and set everything down with a knowing sigh. "Having second thoughts?" she asked gently, settling beside me on the bed. "I don't know what I'm having," I admitted. "This morning I was nobody. Tonight I'll be Luna. It doesn't feel real." Elena poured the tea with practiced hands, the familiar ritual somehow calming. "Change rarely does, especially the big kind. But sometimes the impossible becomes inevitable when we're not looking." I accepted the warm cup gratefully, inhaling the soothing chamomile scent. "Elena, can I ask you something?" "Anything, dear." "Do you think he actually wants me? Or am I just..." I struggled for the words. "Just convenient somehow?" Elena's expression grew thoughtful. She was quiet for so long I wondered if she'd answer at all. When she finally spoke, her voice was careful. "Alpha Kael is... complicated. He's a good leader, strong and decisive. But he's also calculating. Every move he makes serves a purpose." She met my eyes. "That doesn't mean you can't find happiness, Lyra. Sometimes the best relationships grow from unexpected soil." It wasn't exactly reassuring, but it was honest. I appreciated that more than false comfort. "The whole pack is talking," Elena continued. "Most are shocked, some are angry. The older wolves especially think he should have chosen someone from a prominent bloodline." "And what do you think?" Elena smiled, and for the first time, it reached her eyes. "I think maybe it's time this pack learned that strength comes in many forms. You've survived things that would have broken others, Lyra. Don't underestimate what that means." After Elena left, I tried to rest, but sleep wouldn't come. Instead, I found myself at the small window, watching pack members hurry past in preparation for tonight's ceremony. Everyone seemed to have a purpose, a place in the grand design. Everyone except me, still sitting in servants' quarters hours before becoming their Luna. The afternoon crawled by with agonizing slowness. Other servants brought me things: a bath drawn with rose petals, oils for my hair, jewelry that sparkled like trapped lightning. Each gift felt like borrowed finery, beautiful things meant for someone else entirely. As sunset approached, my chest grew tighter with each passing minute. The rational part of my brain whispered warnings I tried to ignore. Why now? Why me? What point was Kael trying to prove by choosing the pack's greatest failure? But beneath the fear, something else stirred. Something that had been sleeping so long I'd forgotten it existed. Hope. Dangerous, treacherous hope that maybe, just maybe, I was about to step into the life I'd always been meant for. A sharp knock interrupted my thoughts. "It's time, Miss Ashwood." Miss Ashwood. I'd never been called that before. Always just "Lyra" or "girl" or "you there." The formality felt strange on my ears, like wearing shoes that didn't quite fit. I stood on shaking legs and reached for the dress. The silk felt like water against my skin, flowing over my curves in ways that made me look almost... beautiful. Almost like someone worthy of standing beside an Alpha. The mirror reflected a stranger. My auburn hair had been woven with silver ribbons that caught the candlelight. The dress transformed my slight frame into something elegant, ethereal. For a moment, I could almost believe I belonged in this story. Another knock, more insistent. "Miss? The Alpha is waiting." Right. The Alpha was waiting. My Alpha, at least for tonight. The thought sent butterflies dancing through my chest, wild and electric. I took one last look at the girl in the mirror, the girl who cleaned floors and accepted insults and dreamed impossible dreams. After tonight, she would be gone forever, replaced by someone new. Someone stronger. Someone who belonged. The walk to the ceremonial clearing felt like walking through a dream. Pack members lined the path, their faces a mixture of curiosity, shock, and barely concealed disapproval. I kept my chin up and my steps steady, even though my heart hammered against my ribs like a caged bird. The clearing was transformed, lit by hundreds of candles and torches that turned everything magical. At the center, beneath the rising full moon, stood Kael. He was devastating in his ceremonial robes, all dark elegance and raw power. When his eyes found mine across the crowd, something fluttered deep in my chest. For just a moment, looking at him looking at me, I let myself believe this was real. That I was chosen, wanted, loved. The crowd parted as I walked toward my destiny, toward the man who held my future in his hands. Each step felt significant, like crossing a bridge I could never uncross. When I reached his side, Kael extended his hand. His fingers were warm, steady, everything mine weren't. He leaned down to whisper in my ear, his breath sending shivers down my spine. "Ready, little wolf?" I nodded, not trusting my voice. Ready or not, there was no going back now. The ceremony was about to begin.
