I couldn't sleep.
I kept turning on my bed, checking the time again and again. I had never felt this anxious before any interview.
"It's going to be fine, Chloe. You can do this," I told myself. But It didn't help.
Every time I closed my eyes, I imagined myself walking into that company and getting thrown out within minutes.
By morning, my head already felt heavy.
"Chloe, I'm making pancakes. You should eat before you go," Mum called from the kitchen.
"I will," I replied.
I knew I wouldn't.
My outfit was laid out on the bed. The best I had.
A white blouse. A black skirt. Low heels that definitely needs changing.
I stared at them for a moment.
"This is crazy," I muttered.
My phone buzzed. Of course, it's Maddie.
Don't even think of backing out. Her voice shouted from the other end.
I sighed.
"You didn't give me much of a choice."
Go in there and make me proud. She said cheerfully.
"Let me breathe first," I said quietly.
I'm running late. We'll talk later. Byeee.
I ended the call quickly before she could speak.
I stood in front of the mirror. My hair was a total mess.
"Seriously? Of all day you decided to act up today?" I muttered.
I tried fixing it but made it worse.
Then I saw a green hairband on my desk.
"Fine. This will work."
I tied my hair into a bun and left a few strands in front.
Better. It wasn't perfect but decent enough.
I looked at myself again.
My brown eyes stared back at me. Mum always said I got them from Dad.
"Chloe, you're running late!" Mum called.
Right. Interview.
I grabbed my bag and files and rushed out.
Leo was already eating.
"Morning, sis."
"Morning," I said, touching his hair.
"Don't mess it up!"
"Let me fix it," I pulled his hair tightly.
"Mum, Chloe is doing it again!"
"Chloe, leave your brother alone," Mum said. I giggled, running towards the door.
"You’re not eating?" she asked.
"I'll eat later. I promise." I left before she could stop me.
The building stood in front of me.
Tall, mighty building made of glass. Its height made me feel small. The sun reflected on it, and it almost looked like a castle.
I swallowed.
"This is not your world," I whispered. But still, I walked in.
Everything inside felt different. Everyone looked confident and knew exactly what they were doing.
Unlike me. I became aware of my appearance. My shoes. My bag.
"Good morning," the receptionist said.
"Good morning."
"I'm here for the interview."
"Name?"
"Chloe Bennet."
"Please take the elevator to the twelfth floor." She said, her eyes locked on her computer.
"Thank you." I moved towards the direction.
The elevator moved slowly.
1... 5... 8... 12.
The doors opened.
A woman approached me almost immediately.
"You're here for the Interview?"
"Yes."
"Follow me."
The waiting room was already full. Immediately, I knew i was in trouble. Beautiful women sitting, all waiting to be interviewed for the same position as me.
They all looked perfect.
I sat quietly.
"Chloe Bennet?"
"Yes."
The interview room was large.
"Have a seat please."
"Thank you."
"Tell us about yourself."
"My name is Chloe Bennet..."
Suddenly the door opened. Everyone paused, heads turned to the direction.
I turned. And then he walked in. All eyes were fixed on him. He walked in calmly, his steps defined.
"Mr Hale," someone said.
So this was Alexander Hale. I thought, my eyes fixated on him.
His eyes moved across the room.
Then, they stopped on me. Just for a second.
"Continue," he said. Then he left.
"Miss Bennet. Please continue." The interviewer called my attention.
I turned back to the interviewer.
"My name is Chloe Bennet..."
But my mind wasn't fully there anymore.
"Thank you. We'll get back to you."
I nodded.
When I got outside, I called Maddie.
It's done.
Okay... And?
I don't think I got it.
You and your negativity Chloe, try being positive sometimes, it'll change your life.
I rolled my eyes as she spoke.
You saw him, didn't you?
Yeah.
Good.
Why is that good?
Because, something tells me your life is about to change.
I looked back at the building.
I didn't belong there.
It definitely doesn't feel like a good change.
