Chapter 10

1473 Words
The carriage rattled on the dirt road, my heart racing faster with each passing mile. This was not the life I had imagined for myself; sold as a slave to a stranger, whisked away without warning, and now I had no idea what lay ahead - or even who he was. I dared to take a glance at him from the corner of my eye; he was an older man with a well-tailored suit and gold jewelry adorning his hands. He caught me looking and gave me a smirk that filled me with dread. "Who are you?" I asked timidly, my voice trembling. "I'm your master now," he replied without a hint of emotion as he grabbed hold of my chin, forcing me to look into his dark eyes. My body quaked with fear; the thought of being owned by this man filled me with terror. What did he plan to do with me? Was there any hope of escape? His grip tightened on my chin as if sensing my inner turmoil and uncertainty, and I felt his eyes boring into mine as he spoke again. "Remember," he warned menacingly, "you will call me 'Master'." I cowered away from him in submission, the harsh truth of my fate sinking in. I was trapped here, powerless against this man’s will - yet despite all this fear, I felt something else too - a burning anger that refused to be extinguished. "What will you do with me?" I asked in a trembling voice, scared of the response that would come. "That's not for you to worry about," he answered sternly. He moved closer towards me, taking an unyielding grip on my chin again as his piercing eyes looked deep into mine. "And remember," his voice was filled with authority, "You need to address me as 'Master'." There was no doubt in my mind that if I disobeyed him again there would be serious repercussions. I shrunk away helplessly, my gaze dropping to the floor. His cold stare felt heavy upon me, conveying both contempt and amusement. What could I do now? Was there any hope of escape? As we continued our journey in the carriage, my thoughts shifted to Anna and Adam. What had happened to them? Were they able to flee from their captors when the chaos erupted, or were they still captives? I prayed they had been able to liberate themselves but feared the worst. My attention turned back outside the window of the carriage. The mountains in the distance loomed closer and closer. The land was desolate and empty, lacking any signs of civilization. Where were we heading? Nothing made sense and it felt like I was in some parallel reality. The man observed me intently, his blue irises studying my every movement. His scrutiny was intimidating and made me feel defenseless and exposed like a caged animal. "Where are we going?" I asked hesitantly, my voice barely audible. "Uhm ... Master," I quickly added in an attempt to show respect. "To my castle," he answered casually. "It's quite a long way there." I was puzzled by his words. A castle? That didn't make any sense. We weren't in the middle ages, and surely there weren't any castles still standing in this modern America. Or was there? I guess I wasn't sure. "What do you mean, Master?" I questioned curiously, apprehension creeping into my heart. He chuckled and shook his head, as if he were dealing with an ignorant child. "You will see soon enough," was his cryptic response. My mind raced through various possibilities of what could be coming. Fear began to overtake me, threatening to consume me whole. The carriage ride continued on for what seemed hours in tense silence, my stomach knotting up with every turn of the wheel. The sun was setting, bathing the landscape in a warm orange glow and making the mountains look even more majestic and imposing than before. Eventually, the carriage rolled to a stop and the man gestured for me to step outside. I hesitated, unsure of what fate awaited me beyond those walls. The man gestured for me to follow him down the narrow cobblestone road leading to a large metal gate. A sentry stood tall outside the gate holding the reins of a blue roan stallion. "We need to ride the rest of the way," he said,"The terrain is too rough for the carriage." He effortlessly mounted the stallion, before offering his hand to me. I had no option but to take it; even if I ran away, the sentry would catch me and bring me back here. I didn't want to think about the punishment that would bring. He hoisted me onto the stallion in front of him, and then kicked it lightly in the flanks. The gate squeaked open, and we rode along the winding path between steep mountain walls. As we rounded a corner, an imposing castle came into view. It was an intimidating sight—its tall stone walls stretching up into the night sky while its spires disappeared into the clouds above. I was speechless at its magnificence. "This is my home," he announced grandly, gesturing to the scene before us. I felt conflicted emotions coursing through me – admiration and fear combining together in equal measure. "You will serve me here," he declared sternly. "If you disobey any of my orders, you will be severely punished." My chest began to sink as I realized that this was going to be my life: Serving this man in his castle. He continued along the cobblestone path that wound around to the castle, tucked away in the mountains' spires. The path eventually ended in a well-kept courtyard outside of the castle walls where he and I both dismounted from his stallion. He walked with a confident gait and it didn't take long before we were inside the castle walls. The main hall was adorned with tapestries, and a giant fireplace dominated the center of it all. Everything was ornately decorated, and the overall feeling was one of luxury and excess. "You'll have the honor of serving me and my guests," said he, with an icy gaze. "Your duties will change but you must obey all my commands without hesitation." His words sent chills down my spine, and I didn't want to think about the tasks he'd have me do, though I had no choice—I was his property now. Taking a firm grip on my arm, he led me toward the stairs and informed me of my lodgings: "Your room is in the basement; you'll sleep there, and be available for service at any moment's notice. Is that clear?" "Yes, Master," I replied obediently. "Martha!" He bellowed out abruptly, prompting an older woman dressed as a servant to arrive shortly thereafter. "Take this new servant to the servant's quarters," he commanded without looking at me. "I have places to be." "Yes, Mr. Delarosa," she bowed slightly. "Come with me," Martha turned her attention to me, as she led me down the stairs. As I descended the stone steps, I could see a dreary basement with only a single candle to light up the space. The cold cement floor was moist to the touch, and the air smelled of decay. Cots lined one of the walls, along with some musty bedding. I just caught something scurry across the floor out of the corner of my eye. "This is where you will live from now on," Martha declared. My eyes wandered around the dismal room in shock - was this really what my life had come to? I felt tears threatening to spill from my eyes, but I swallowed them back. I would not give this cruel man the satisfaction of making me cry. "Thank you," I mumbled softly, unable to muster up any real gratitude. She asked for my name, so I told her that people called me Kat before asking if we were done for the night. "Yes," she answered, "but you'll have much to do tomorrow when I return for you." I nodded and silently hoped for a better day tomorrow. Martha gave a nod before heading back up the stairs. I stood there, alone and afraid, not knowing what to do, before reluctantly climbing into one of the cots. I was exhausted, but sleep was elusive. I tossed and turned on the rickety cot, trying to get comfortable. The bedding was musty and full of bugs. It was a far cry from the life I had once known, and I was overcome with despair. What was I going to do? How was I going to survive in this cruel new reality? As the night dragged on, I eventually fell into a fitful sleep, my dreams filled with nightmares of my new life as a slave.
