The sound of the lock faded, but the silence that followed made it feel like a threat.
Sofia ignored the food Silas had left behind. Instead, she touched the pendant around her neck and held it tightly.
The metal felt hot against her skin. It was almost burning her. The heat seemed to pulse at the same time as her fast-beating heart.
Save us...
The whispers returned.
This time, they were louder.
They seemed to come from her head. Sofia gasped and stepped backward until the back of her knees hit the large bed.
She closed her eyes and her ears with both hands, hoping the voices would stop.
But they didn't.
The voices were not coming from the room.
They were inside her mind.
If Silas thought she would eat the food, sleep, and wait for whatever Damon had planned for tomorrow, he was wrong.
Sofia slowly lowered her hands and opened her eyes.
Her green eyes were sharp in the soft firelight.
She looked at the heavy wooden door. Then she looked at the tall windows overlooking the dark pine forest.
She needed to escape.
Something was changing inside her.
Something her mother had spent twenty-three years trying to keep hidden was finally waking up.
And whatever it was, it was telling Sofia that she had to move.Sofia walked firmly across the room toward the tall windows.
She tried to open one, but it wouldn 't budge. It was locked tight just like the door, and the glass was super thick.
"Damn it," she whispered, putting her hands flat on the cold window.
Outside, the dark forest looked scary in the moonlight, with shadows t
wisting around the trees like they were alive.
All of a sudden, the necklace under her shirt got super hot.
It wasn't a normal kind of warmth.
It felt like electricity shooting through her whole body. The weird power rushed down her arms and pooled right in her fingertips.
Then, the glass under her hands started to shake.
Sofia jumped back so fast she almost fell over. She gasped and stared at the window.
A tiny crack had spiderwebbed across the glass right where her right hand had been touching it.
She looked down at her hands, her heart pounding.
*What did I just do?*
She didn't even have time to think about it before she heard heavy footsteps in the hallway.
Slow, confident steps.
Damon.
The sound of him made her completely forget about trying to escape through the window.
She felt both scared and furious at the same time.
She turned around and backed up until her legs hit the edge of the big bed.
Then, someone knocked sharply on the heavy wooden door.
Damon didn't just barge in this time. He waited.
"Open the door, Sofia."
His voice was deep and calm, but it had so much power in it that a chill went down her spine.
"Or I'll open it myself."
Sofia lifted her chin.
She refused to look scared of him.
She walked across the room, grabbed the iron handle, and yanked the door open.
Damon was standing right there in the hallway.
He towered over her. His hair was a little messy, and his eyes had that weird silver glow to them.
He looked her up and down.
He saw the way she was standing defensively, with her wild curls framing her face, refusing to back down.
A slow, dangerous smile crept onto his face.
"I see you're settling in," Damon said softly.
His eyes dropped to her necklace for a second before looking back into her eyes.
"Good. Because the council is getting here at sunrise. They want to see their human prisoner."
Sofia's face stayed totally blank.
She stepped right into his personal space, getting as close as she could. She wanted him to know she wasn't defeated.
"I am not your prisoner," she said strictly. "And I'm not meeting anyone until you tell me why I'm even here."
Damon's smile vanished instantly.
His face turned dark and serious.
He reached out and wrapped his fingers around her wrist. He didn't squeeze hard enough to hurt, but there was no way she could pull away.
He tugged her a little closer.
She could feel how hot his body was.
"You'll figure out where you fit in soon enough, mate," he whispered.
His deep voice echoed down the empty hallway.
"Starting tomorrow, everything changes."
