Kade

Kade --- It was a long day, longer than usual at least. Running a pack isn't the easiest thing to do, especially when the people you count on to help you are always missing. Probably off goofing around with some girl of the week. After spending all morning going through an eternity of paperwork, my desk was finally cleared. I pushed my chair back and and took a deep breath. I'm already twenty-seven years old. I've been waiting to find my fated mate since I was eighteen years old. Sure, John and Max haven't yet either, but, I don't think they were interested at the moment either. They were more interested in having fun and not being tied down, and of course, limited responsibility. "Kade, you started without me?" said John as he strolled into my office. "What a shame, you know how much I enjoy doing the reading and signing of those papers you got there." Max was following right behind him, and sat in the chair across from me. "Sorry Kade, John needed to be bailed out of a situation." I looked at John, waiting for some crazy story that may or may not have happened. "It wasn't a situation, there were just some lonely ladies that needed some attention.... and as I was doing a good service, they forgot to mention that they had boyfriends waiting for them." He shook his had, as if he had truly been wronged. I looked at Max to fill in the rest of the story that John was missing. "They were human and wanted to deck John. I happened to be passing by and pulled him away before things went too far." Max glared at John, and John simply shrugged his shoulders as if it were nothing. "Why do you bother going into town if you're just going to cause trouble?" I asked John. "I'm hurt, I wasn't causing trouble, it is more community service. How else will the ladies get to see such an attractive man?" said John acting hurt. "I guess they will just have to suffer," I huffed. "Is there any other issues going on right now?" "No, everything seems pretty peaceful right now," said Max. "Hey, you know what we should do? We should go out tonight. It's been a while since we went to town together." said John grinning. "Kade you haven't been to town for years." "That's because one of us has to work, or nothing would get done around here." "Honestly, it just seems like you like to stay caught up in pack work all the time. Seriously though Kade, you're never going to find her if you stay stuck in here all the time." John isn't usually the serious type, but occasionally he has his moments. "You know I'm not looking anymore. If she were out there I would have found her at some point, or sensed her... or anything." I turned my chair to look out the window. Everything seemed still. "Yeah, ok, let's just go check things out. It's been a while. We should check out what's going on around us." I could see that John was excited at the prospect. Max, just shrugged his shoulders. It was about 4pm when we headed out. We drove through the town. Stopped at a restaurant that used to be one of my favorites years before. Before I stopped coming into town. The waitress flirted at our table for a bit as she asked how we liked our steaks done. I wasn't really in the mood, so John did his bit of "public service." She tried slipping me her number when she dropped off the check but I just left it there. "Dude, she was interested in you, and you know with that grouchy face of yours, it's very rare opportunity," said John with a shake of the head. "Why are you so interested in every girl you see? Can't you just pick one and stick with it for more than two seconds?" I glared at John. "How could I be so selfish as to do that?" "Whatever, just get in the car," I growled. On our way back we passed a small diner that was on the outskirts of town. I don't know why but I felt a pull to stop by. While I was still thinking about whether or not to pull over. John suddenly pointed at that diner. "OH, wait, can we stop by there? They have the best coffee," said John. "He just wants to stop by and see if Jen is on shift." said Max. "Another one," I grumbled. I pulled in anyways. Part of me was relieved that it was John who asked to come. I never liked too many questions, and John never gave up without an answer. "He never talks to her. Just shows up and orders a coffee." Max said. I looked back at John, he actually looked like he turned a little red. "I don't know what you're talking about, I could just really use some coffee," said John while clearing his throat. We all got out of the vehicle and walked up to the diner. I'm not sure exactly why, but I could feel my heart beating slightly faster. All of my senses seemed to be on a higher level than usual. As we walked through the doors, I could feel a strong presence, and a scent that seemed overwhelming. "Let's sit over there," said John. We walked to the corner booth and sat down. While pretending to look the menu over I was scanning the diner. "Hi fellas, I'm Mags, do you need a moment or would you like to order something now?" said the waitress. "Could we get some coffee?" said John. "Oh, by the way, is Jen working this evening? I forgot to leave her a tip yesterday when I came in." The waitress smiled, "Oh, so you're the fella that she was talking about?" "Oh, she was talking about me?" said John acting like it was no big deal. "Umm, what did she say?" "She said that there was a tall fella who was one of her regulars," she stopped and smiled for a second. "She said that he was kind of cute and...." John was on the edge of his seat, waiting to see what she had to say next. "Oh, that's right, a bit of a coward.... she keeps waiting for him to ask her out," she said with a wink. John swallowed and tried to play off he wasn't embarrassed. Max, was just sitting back enjoying the show. It wasn't that common for John to be lacking words. The waitress just laughed to herself, "I'll be right back with those coffees." As she was leaving I saw a girl come out of the kitchen, everything inside of me stopped. It was her, my mate. She had long dark hair and bright green eyes, she was a little on the small side, but she was perfect. She must have sensed me staring at her because she glanced my way. I didn't bother to look away. She looked away and was back in the kitchen before I could even process that I saw her. "Hey Kade, what's up with you?" John said, while he turned to look in the direction that I was staring at. Not even bothering to wait for a reply, "Well, we might as well leave after these coffees." Max was still looking at me. He was a little more perceptive than John. He knew something was going on with me. After we finished the coffees we headed back to the vehicle. I hadn't seen the girl again after she went back to the kitchen. After waiting 20min, I figured she wasn't going to be returning anytime soon.
