CHAPTER ELEVEN BREAKING POINT

1615 Words
After the visit to the Kingston estate, something between Elena and Adrian changed permanently. Not openly. Not verbally. But quietly. Deeply. Like two people who had finally seen the wounds hidden beneath each other’s skin. The mansion felt different afterward. Softer somehow. The silences between them no longer felt cold. They felt aware. Dangerously aware. And that terrified Elena more than anything else. Because the more she understood Adrian… The harder it became to protect her own heart. — Three days later, Elena stood inside her design studio staring at unfinished sketches spread across the table. For the first time in weeks, she was trying to work again. Trying to feel like herself again. Large windows flooded the room with sunlight while soft instrumental music played quietly in the background. She adjusted a fabric sample absentmindedly, but her focus kept drifting. To Adrian. Again. The memory of his voice in the car haunted her. “No one.” Such a simple answer. Yet filled with years of loneliness. A knock interrupted her thoughts. “Elena?” She turned instantly. Mia stood at the doorway holding coffee. Relief immediately crossed her face. “Oh thank God,” Mia sighed dramatically before hugging her tightly. “You’re alive.” Elena laughed softly for the first time that morning. “Barely.” Mia pulled back and studied her carefully. “You look different.” Elena frowned slightly. “Different how?” “Calmer.” Mia narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “And weirdly expensive.” Elena looked down at the designer clothes Adrian’s staff picked for her and laughed quietly. “Fair point.” Mia placed the coffee on the table before leaning closer. “So…” her voice lowered immediately, “what is actually happening between you and Adrian Kingston?” Elena instantly looked away. “That’s complicated.” Mia gasped dramatically. “Oh my God. You like him.” “What? No.” “You looked away.” “That means nothing.” “That means everything.” Elena groaned softly. “Mia…” But before she could continue, her phone vibrated sharply. A message appeared from Adrian. Car downstairs. Come immediately. Elena blinked. No greeting. No explanation. Typical. Mia snatched the phone quickly. “Elena Williams,” she whispered dramatically, “why is that man so intense?” Elena took the phone back quickly, trying not to smile. “He’s always like that.” “Exactly. And somehow you sound fond of it.” Elena froze slightly. Fond? No. Absolutely not. That would be dangerous. Very dangerous. She grabbed her bag quickly. “I have to go.” Mia folded her arms knowingly. “You’re blushing.” “I am not.” “You literally are.” Elena ignored her and hurried outside before Mia could say anything worse. But the moment she entered the car and saw Adrian sitting inside… Her heartbeat betrayed her instantly. He looked unfairly attractive today. Black suit. Dark watch. Sharp jawline tense as he reviewed documents on his tablet. Composed. Powerful. Dangerously distracting. “You’re staring.” Elena immediately looked away. “I was not.” A faint pause. Then: “You were.” Heat rushed into her cheeks instantly. Adrian noticed. Of course he noticed. But surprisingly, he said nothing further. Instead, he handed her a folder calmly. “We have a problem.” Her stomach tightened. “What happened?” “Someone leaked information to the media.” Elena frowned as she opened the folder. Then froze. Photographs filled the pages. Private photos. Her entering Adrian’s bedroom hallway late at night. Him touching her waist after Jason left. Close angles designed to look intimate. Her chest tightened instantly. “Oh my God…” Adrian’s expression darkened. “The media plans to release them tonight.” Panic rose immediately inside her. “This looks horrible.” “Yes.” Her hands trembled slightly flipping through the pages. Then suddenly— One image made her blood run cold. Jason and Vanessa speaking privately to reporters. Elena stared at it silently. “They did this.” Adrian’s voice became colder. “Yes.” Pain crashed through her chest all over again. Even after everything… Jason still wanted to destroy her publicly. Elena looked away quickly before tears formed. “I don’t understand why he hates me this much now.” Adrian’s gaze shifted toward her. “He doesn’t hate you.” “Then why do this?” A dangerous silence followed. Then Adrian answered quietly: “Because losing you damaged his pride.” The truth in those words hurt terribly. Elena looked down at the photographs again. Humiliation burned through her. People would believe anything after these leaked. Gold digger. Mistress. Manipulative woman. The internet would destroy her again. Her breathing became uneven. “I can’t do this anymore.” Adrian immediately noticed the panic rising inside her. “Elena.” She shook her head quickly. “No. I’m serious. I can’t keep surviving scandals every week.” Her voice cracked painfully. “I’m exhausted.” The car suddenly felt too small. Too suffocating. Tears blurred her vision. “Stop the car,” she whispered shakily. The driver immediately obeyed. Before Adrian could stop her, Elena stepped out into the crowded city sidewalk. Warm afternoon air hit her instantly. But it didn’t help. Everything felt overwhelming again. The betrayal. The media. The fake marriage. The feelings she was trying desperately not to develop. Her chest tightened painfully as tears slipped free. She wrapped her arms around herself shakily. “I’m tired,” she whispered brokenly. A few seconds later, Adrian stepped out beside her. “Elena.” She looked away. “I can’t breathe properly anymore.” The confession shattered something in him instantly. Adrian watched her trembling shoulders silently. Then slowly— Very slowly— He stepped closer. “You’re overwhelmed,” he said quietly. “No kidding.” Despite the tears, a weak laugh escaped her. Adrian’s expression softened slightly. Barely noticeable. But real. “You don’t have to carry this alone.” The words hit her unexpectedly hard. Because nobody had ever truly carried pain with her before. Not without conditions. Not without selfish motives. Elena looked up at him through tears. “Why are you being kind to me?” The question lingered heavily between them. Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly. As if even he didn’t fully know the answer anymore. Finally, he spoke quietly. “Because someone should be.” Her heart ached instantly. That answer felt too genuine. Too dangerous. Elena wiped her tears quickly. “You’re making this difficult.” “What?” “Trying not to fall for you.” Silence. The entire world seemed to stop moving around them. Cars passed. People walked nearby. But suddenly none of it existed. Adrian stared at her completely still. Elena realized what she said one second too late. Horror flooded her face instantly. “I didn’t mean—” “Yes, you did.” His voice was low now. Rougher than usual. The tension between them thickened immediately. Elena’s pulse thundered painfully. Adrian stepped closer slowly. Too close. Her breathing caught instantly. “You should be careful, Elena,” he said quietly. “With what?” “With giving your heart to broken people.” The words struck deeply because she knew he included himself in that sentence. Elena looked directly into his eyes. “Maybe I’m tired of being afraid.” Something dangerous shifted in Adrian’s expression. Control slipped slightly. Just slightly. Enough to make her heartbeat lose rhythm. Then suddenly— A voice interrupted sharply behind them. “How touching.” Elena froze instantly. Vanessa. She turned slowly. Vanessa stood beside two reporters across the street, smiling cruelly while cameras pointed directly at them. Elena’s blood ran cold. Vanessa lifted her phone slightly. “Oh, this is perfect,” she mocked. “The emotional cheating wife finally exposed.” Pain crashed into Elena immediately. “No—” Cameras flashed violently. Questions exploded around them. “Mrs. Kingston, were you involved with Adrian before ending your engagement?” “Did your affair begin before the hotel scandal?” “How long were you cheating with your husband’s uncle?” Elena stepped back shakily. Panic rose instantly. This was exactly what Vanessa wanted. Public humiliation. Again. Tears burned Elena’s eyes as reporters pushed closer. Then suddenly— Adrian moved. Fast. His arm wrapped firmly around Elena protectively as he pulled her against him. The atmosphere shifted instantly. Dangerously. His gray eyes turned ice cold toward the reporters. “Take one more photograph,” he said quietly, “and every company represented here will spend tomorrow unemployed.” Silence crashed down immediately. Even the reporters froze. Vanessa’s smirk faltered slightly. Adrian’s gaze slowly shifted toward her next. And for the first time— Elena saw genuine fury in him. “You,” he said coldly, “have mistaken cruelty for power for far too long.” Vanessa laughed nervously. “You can’t threaten me.” “Watch me.” Two simple words. Terrifyingly calm. Vanessa’s confidence visibly weakened. Adrian pulled Elena closer protectively. Then looked directly at the reporters again. “Print a single false statement about my wife,” he said quietly, “and I will personally bury every publication involved.” The threat settled heavily into the air. Because everyone knew Adrian Kingston never made empty threats. Vanessa’s face paled slightly. For the first time since this nightmare began… Someone stood between Elena and the people trying to destroy her. Completely. Fearlessly. Without hesitation. And suddenly Elena realized something terrifying. This was no longer just a contract for Adrian anymore. This had become personal.
