Chapter seventeen - She is lying

Cassie's POV:

Ben finally recovered completely. He came back to school two days ago. Ashley tried her charm on him once again. It's not like it worked. My friend cut her off a long time ago. Now, she is no one in his eyes. No matter how hard she tries, Ben will never accept her. That's what you get for being a cheater and a liar. I'm glad he is not with her. Someone will say I want him for myself. Well, that is not the case. I do love him, but only as a friend. Also, I have to keep him safe. My friend has a powerful aura but doesn't know how to use it yet. One day I will teach him. The problem is that I never have time for this. As I see it, the right time will never come. It's better if I do it soon. Maybe he can use it to help me find the mysterious book. I talked with him about my plan. Ben agreed to help me. All he has to do is distract my granny until I check her books. The problem is that I don't know how it looks. It might have a cover on top. It can be something like a case for disguise. It's wrong to investigate my grandmother. The thing is that I know she hides something from me. If it's not the book, I will understand what it is. Honestly, I never thought granny and I would have secrets from each other. I mean, not when it comes to my power. After all, she taught me everything about it. Maybe there are some things she doesn't want me to know. I still don't understand what is so special about this book. It only will tell you how to use your power, nothing else. Probably there are some tricks or ways how to use for bad intentions. That is something I don't want to know. Someone has the book. If it's not my granny, I have to find the person. I never suspected Ben, but he can't have it. This boy didn't even know what this was before I told him. I can ask him for assistance. I hope that we'll have luck.

Today is the day I will put my plan into action. Ben has recovered successfully, and I can use his help. Let's hope my granny won't get mad at me. I want us to keep good relations. Sometimes, I feel like it's a crime. I won't steal anything from her, but I feel bad. I have never done anything like that. I hate having secrets, but this time it's necessary. Well, this will be for the last time. If only I could believe myself, but I can't. Hopefully, I will have success. That is all I want.

I woke up and checked my phone. I told Ben to text me when he woke up. Maybe he is still in bed. My friend wanted us to talk about the plan again. Probably he is nervous, but there is no turning back. If I don't do it now, I will never do it. When I was ready for the day, I walked downstairs for breakfast. Only dad was at the table. Maybe mom is sleeping. I sat at the table. Soon a plate appeared in front of me. Surprisingly, the food looks great. I can't believe that dad made it.

- Good job, chef.

- Thank you, miss.

- Can I know why you are making breakfast? Usually, you don't do it.

- Your mom was tired last night, so I thought I could prepare the food instead of her.

- That's great. She would love it.

- I hope so. What are your plans for the day?

- Well, Ben and I will visit my granny. My friend has a lot of questions, and I will leave her to deal with them.

- You got annoyed, didn't you?

- Not much, but yes.

- Do you think she will answer them?

- I hope so. After all, she knows about the power more than I do. She can help him.

- True, but you are his friend.

- I know. I will help him with what I can.

Ben, Chelsea, and I went for food on the lunch break. The cheerleaders and the football team were there. Ashley was next to James. I took a piece of my friend's food and put it in his mouth. Both with Chelsea looked at me.

- What was that? - Chelsea asked

- He got distracted.

- I'm sorry. Sometimes, it still hurts.

The last class finished, and I waited for Ben. Later, both of us went to my granny's house. She was surprised to see us but let us in. I smell something delicious. I have no idea how the book looks, so I have to check each one. I started from the top shelf. It turned out that all of them got filled with cooking recipes.

After half an hour, I checked all the books. I found some about auras, but I have read them already. What if granny has a safe? In the beginning, I rejected this option. Maybe I have to find it. The question is where. I don't know if she has one or not. Usually, people keep them in their bedrooms. I walked there and went straight to her wardrobe. I knew it! The problem is that I have no idea what her password is. There are tons of combinations

- Can I know what you are doing in my bedroom?

- Um, hi, granny.

- Answer me. Now!

- Ok, ok. I was searching for the book.

- You think that I have it, don't you?

- Yes, I do. Will you tell me what you keep in this safe? Actually, why do you need one?

Granny didn't say anything. She entered her password and opened the safe. The only thing in there was some money and jewelry. Now I feel bad. Probably she will get mad at me. That is not how I wanted the day to end.

- Why will you search at my house?

- That's why you used your friend.

- Actually, this wasn't part of the plan. - Ben said

- What? - both with granny said in sync

- Since you didn't want to answer all my questions, I asked your granny.

- I'm not happy with what you did. - granny said

Both with Ben left my granny's house. As I expected, she was mad at me. I went home and laid on the bed. My friend followed me. Granny probably won't talk to me ever again. Maybe I can ask dad to deal with this. She loves him, and he will have success. Soon I felt hands wrapped around me. I looked up to see Ben.

- Hugs always help.

- Not in this case. Now granny hates me.

- Your grandmother doesn't hate you. She feels upset because you don't trust her.

- Ben, she is lying. This woman is hiding something from me, and I want to know what.

- Why don't you talk with your aunt? She might help.

- I don't think so. The last time I asked my aunt, she had only heard of the rumor. What are the chances that she knows something?

- What if her granny told her not to talk to you?

For a whole hour, Ben and I talked about granny and my auntie Kim. I don't know what is going on, but I will understand. My friend wanted to go home, but I convinced him to stay for dinner. Up to now, Ben has only sent me home. He was never inside. Now he knows everything, so I have nothing to hide.

Soon my parents came home from work, and mom started with dinner. I went to help her. She immediately noticed there was something wrong. I can ask her to talk with granny, but I know she won't do it.

- Will you tell me what the problem is?

- I had a small argument with granny.

- Do I have to call her?

- It's better if you don't do it.

- Why?

- Let's say that it's about something you don't like.

- In that case, I won't help. You know that talking about this is not something I like.

- She thinks that I'm thinking of her as a liar.

- What did you do?

- I went to her house and distracted her. That way, I could check for something.

- Cassie, that is not polite.

- I know, but what else I had to do? She said she didn't know anything when I asked her about it. That was a lie.

- My mother might be many things, but she is not a liar.

- Are you sure? Mom, granny hides something from me.

- Look, I will talk with her, but you will apologize.

- I did. She is mad at me.

- In her place, I would've been too.

All of us sat at the table. Dinner was delicious, like always. As I see it, Ben liked it as well. I need to do something for granny. What I did wasn't the right thing to do. I don't even know why I suspected her. The thing is that I feel she is hiding something from me. Maybe it's not the book, but this woman doesn't want to tell me. I can ask my auntie Kim. The thing is that granny might have told her not to talk to me. What is that thing I shouldn't know about and why? I don't think it's something dangerous. Soon I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Ben.

- What?

- Your mom was calling you.

- Oh, I'm sorry.

- Hey, don't think much about it. I will talk with mom, and everything will be fine. - mom said

- I don't think so.

- Why? I'm sure she will understand.

- That's what I am hoping.

After dinner, Ben and I went into my room for a movie. Let's say I convinced him to stay with me for a while. I didn't want to be alone. Too many things happened today. Luckily, he didn't complain about it. The movie wasn't that interesting, but I needed a cuddle buddy. Also, someone with who I can talk about it.

- Your mom is right.

- About what?

- That you worry too much. Your granny won't be mad at you forever. I don't even think she is mad at you. Maybe she is just disappointed.

- That is even worse.

- My bad.

- It's ok. I won't think about this now.

- Where will we search for the book?

- I can talk with auntie Kim, but she won't tell me anything.

- How about that girl Abby?

- She works in a library. I have asked her many times.

Ben stayed at home until 10 pm. Later, he went home. I would love it if he had been here for the night, but we are only friends. Also, now it's not time for this. I'm glad that he is helping me to find the book. Honestly, I never thought it would be so hard. Probably because I have no idea how it looks or if it's real. Granny and my auntie Kim won't help me, so I should do it. Luckily, I have a good friend who will help me. Ben is a great guy, and I believe he will find a better girl than Ashley. Right now, I should focus on my search. When I finish it, I can think about my life. I want to read the book and see if what people say is true. I hope we'll find it soon because I don't know how long I can wait.
