chapter 11

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom remained closed long after the federal agents had escorted Arthur Vance away. The senior members of the board sat in stunned silence, their eyes fixed on the empty chair at the head of the table. The illusion of safety and endless wealth had shattered completely in less than an hour. Victor stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the sprawling downtown skyline. The morning sunlight glinted off the glass towers of rival corporations, but none of them held the power that Vance Holdings commanded. Mr. Vance is gone, the senior director whispered, breaking the heavy quiet as he looked up at Victor. But the company cannot run itself. The markets open in a few hours, and if the shareholders see complete leadership vacuum, the stock will crash into permanent bankruptcy. What do you propose we do. Victor turned slowly away from the window. He walked back toward the mahogany table, his dark suit jacket falling neatly against his broad shoulders. He placed both hands flat on the polished wood, leaning forward slightly as his piercing gaze swept across every frightened face in the room. You do not need to worry about the market crash, Victor said, his voice deep, calm, and commanding. Because Vance Holdings is returning to its original owners today. The directors murmured among themselves, shifting uncomfortably in their leather chairs. One of the younger executives raised his hand hesitantly. On what legal grounds, the executive asked. The board controls the voting shares. Even without Arthur, we vote on the next chairman. Victor reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a single, thick envelope stamped with a gold embossed seal. He slid it across the mahogany table. It stopped directly in front of the senior director. Open it, Victor instructed quietly. That document was registered with the federal trade commission five years ago, right before my father company was forcefully dissolved. It proves that the majority voting shares were illegally seized through corporate coercion. The senior director pulled the papers out of the envelope with trembling fingers. He scanned the legal stamps, the official signatures, and the clear corporate registry numbers. As his eyes processed the text, his face turned pale. This is... this is authentic, the director stammered, looking up in absolute disbelief. You hold fifty-one percent of the voting stock. You have owned the controlling share this entire time. Yes, Victor replied coldly. And now I am exercising my rights. He walked around the table and pulled out the large leather chair where Arthur had sat just moments before. He sat down slowly, resting his elbows on the armrests and interlocking his fingers in front of his face. The transformation was complete. The ghost who had returned from the dead was now the undisputed master of the building. Effective immediately, Victor announced, his voice echoing authoritatively across the silent room, every asset, every subsidiary, and every account belonging to this corporation is frozen for internal audit. Any board member who assisted Arthur in his illegal operations will be handed over to federal investigators by the end of the day. The rest of you have a choice: help me rebuild this company correctly, or pack your desks and leave right now. Nobody moved. Nobody objected. The directors simply nodded in quiet submission, realizing that fighting a man who had outsmarted and dismantled Arthur Vance was absolute suicide. Meeting adjourned, Victor said. As the board members hurriedly gathered their files and rushed out of the room, Victor sat alone in the quiet executive suite. The victory tasted sweet, but a lingering unease pulled at the back of his mind. Taking down Arthur and Marcus was the easy part. But as he stared at the corporate security monitors displaying the lobby downstairs, he noticed a lone figure standing across the street in the rain, watching the main entrance with an intense, unblinking stare. Someone else was still out there, watching every move he made.
