chapter 12:

581 Words
Chapter 12 The heavy silence of the executive suite was broken only by the soft hum of the air conditioning. Victor kept his eyes locked on the security monitor displaying the street outside the front entrance of the building. The lone figure standing across the wet pavement did not move. Even from fifty floors up, the rigid posture and the dark raincoat made it clear that this person was not an ordinary passerby. They were watching the doors with a calculated, patient focus. Victor stood up from the mahogany chair, buttoning his suit jacket as he walked away from the desk. He did not take the elevator down to the lobby. Instead, he stepped into the private service stairwell at the back of the executive floor, descending the concrete steps in quiet, rapid strides. Every muscle in his body was alert, tuned to the sudden shift from corporate boardroom politics back to raw, physical survival. Five minutes later, Victor pushed open the heavy steel service door that led directly into the subterranean parking garage beneath the skyscraper. The underground garage was dim, lit only by flickering fluorescent tubes that buzzed softly in the damp air. Rows of expensive luxury vehicles sat parked between thick concrete pillars, casting long, twisted shadows across the ground. Victor walked silently between the parked cars, his leather shoes making almost no sound against the concrete. Suddenly, a sharp metallic click echoed from the shadows near the far corner of the parking level. Victor stopped instantly, his body dropping into a low, defensive stance. He slipped his hand inside his coat, wrapping his fingers tightly around the hilt of his hidden titanium blade. Show yourself, Victor called out, his voice echoing cleanly off the concrete walls. I know you are down here. A slow, deliberate pair of footsteps emerged from behind a massive concrete pillar. The person stepped into the dim glow of the overhead light. It was a woman wearing a dark tactical jacket, her face partially obscured by the shadow of a baseball cap pulled low over her brow. But even in the gloom, Victor recognized the sharp, dangerous smirk playing across her lips. It took you longer than I expected to notice me, the woman said, her voice smooth and confident. Victor eyes narrowed as he stared at her. He had never seen her face before, yet her voice carried an unsettling familiarity. Who are you, Victor demanded, stepping closer without lowering his guard. You have been tracking my movements since the harbor warehouse. What do you want with me. The woman took another step forward into the light, raising her hands slowly to show she held no weapon. My name is not important, she replied, her eyes gleaming with a hidden challenge. What matters is that you just took down Arthur Vance and seized his empire. Everyone in the underworld thinks you are the new king of the city. But you missed a piece on the board, Victor. Victor jaw tightened. What are you talking about. Arthur was just a figurehead for a much larger syndicate, the woman whispered, taking a slow step toward him. And the real masters of Vance Holdings are already moving to crush you before you even settle into your new chair. Before Victor could ask another question, the security lights across the entire underground garage flickered twice and died completely, plunging the entire floor into pitch darkness. Footsteps rushed toward them from multiple directions out of the shadows.
