Chapter 16:

430 Words
The heavy steel doors blew inward with a deafening roar, sending a thick cloud of gray smoke and twisted chunks of metal flying across the concrete floor. The acrid smell of explosives filled the underground bunker instantly. Through the clearing smoke, a heavily armed tactical strike team poured into the room, their assault rifles raised and locked directly onto Director Hayes and his guards. Drop your weapons! the lead tactical commander bellowed, his voice echoing off the reinforced concrete walls like thunder. Federal agents! Do it now! The three guards standing behind Victor froze. They looked at the overwhelming firepower facing them, dropped their rifles onto the floor, and raised their hands in the air, falling backward against the wall in total surrender. Director Hayes lunged desperately for the pistol inside his desk drawer, his fingers frantically scraping against the wood. Before he could pull the trigger, a swift, precise kick from the tactical commander sent the desk drawer flying off its tracks. Hayes stumbled backward, crashing hard against his leather chair before sliding down onto the floor. Two agents rushed forward instantly, slamming cold steel handcuffs around his wrists and hauling him up to his feet. Director Hayes, you are under arrest for treason, federal conspiracy, and corruption of public office, the commander stated coldly, reading the charges as they dragged the screaming director toward the exit. Victor sat calmly in the heavy metal chair as the mysterious woman stepped forward, using a small key to unlock the leather straps binding his wrists and chest. He rubbed his shoulders, standing up smoothly and adjusting his shirt. You cut that timing awfully close, Victor said, offering her a faint, knowing smile. She slipped the decryption drive back into her tactical pocket and looked up at him with a sharp grin. A good grand finale always requires a little bit of dramatic tension, she replied smoothly. Victor walked over to the main control console. The computer monitors around the room were now flashing bright green, displaying full public transparency reports that were automatically transmitting straight to the federal oversight board and major news networks upstairs. The syndicate was completely exposed. The network of corruption that had stolen his family empire five years ago was finally shattered beyond repair. Victor turned his gaze toward the open doorway where the smoke was slowly clearing, revealing the bright lights of the corporate elevator waiting to take him back to the surface. The war was over, but as he stepped out of the bunker, he knew a new chapter for Vance Holdings was just beginning.
