The rain had stopped hours ago. The air smelled clean — fresh earth, wet leaves, and something new, something alive.
Zoe stood by the open window of the small cottage that overlooked the lake, the same lake where it all began. The morning light poured in gently, brushing her skin with warmth. She watched as the mist slowly lifted, revealing the calm water beneath.
Mark was behind her, half-asleep on the couch, a book resting on his chest. The fire from the night before still glowed faintly in the hearth, its embers a soft orange. Everything about the moment felt unreal — too peaceful, too still — and yet, she knew it was real.
Her hands rested over her stomach, and for a moment, she closed her eyes. There was no fear anymore. No doubt. Just the steady beat of her heart and the soft rhythm of his breathing behind her.
“Could you ever forgive the past completely?” she asked quietly, not turning around.
Mark’s voice was low, husky with sleep. “No,” he said. “But I can live with it — as long as the future has you.”
She smiled, a tear tracing her cheek — not from pain this time, but from gratitude. She turned to face him, and for the first time in a long time, she saw in his eyes not guilt, not sorrow… but peace.
They didn’t need words. He opened his arms, and she walked into them, resting her head against his chest. Outside, a flock of white birds took off from the lake, their wings glistening in the morning sun — a quiet reminder that even after the storm, life always finds a way to begin again.
Mark kissed her forehead softly. “What are you thinking?” he asked.
Zoe looked out the window once more. “That I don’t want forever,” she said. “Just every day — as it comes.”
He smiled against her hair. “Then every day, you’ll have.”
The lake shimmered in the distance, reflecting the light of a new dawn. Somewhere beyond the horizon, their past still existed — its mistakes, its heartbreaks — but it no longer defined them. They had chosen each other, not because it was easy, but because it was true.
And sometimes, that’s all love really needs to be.
