CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Chapter Twenty two The morning sun barely filtered through the tall curtains of the Tristan mansion. Jennifer and George Tristan sat in their breakfast room, their unease palpable. Kendrick sat across from them, fingers drumming impatiently on the table. The atmosphere was thick with unspoken words. “Did you see her yesterday?” Kendrick finally asked, voice sharp and controlled. “Of course we did,” Jennifer replied, trying to sound calm, but her hands shook slightly. “She—she was… fearless. Standing up to all of us, just like that.” “Fearless? She’s reckless,” George muttered, eyes narrowing. “I’ve never seen her this way. I expected her to cower, to be polite, but…” He shook his head, a frown etching deeper into his features. Kendrick’s smirk appeared, sharp and calculated. “That’s why we need a plan. Briella may have her moments of courage, but no one is untouchable. She’s gotten too comfortable with her little… Marcellus returning. That’s dangerous.” Jennifer looked worried but remained silent, knowing Kendrick’s mind worked in unpredictable ways. “I say we remind her who’s in control,” Kendrick continued, leaning back in his chair. “We let her think she’s strong, untouchable—but then we test her. Push her limits. See if she’ll crack.” George’s brows furrowed. “You really think she’d—?” “Yes, Father. She’s human. And if we push carefully, she’ll have no choice but to respond. And when she does…” Kendrick’s smile widened, dangerous and unnerving. “We’ll see if that ice cream ride and friendly office partnership lasts. Or if she’ll snap and show us the real cracks underneath that polished exterior.” Jennifer swallowed, sensing the storm brewing. “But… what about Marcellus? He’s back now. He’s… protective.” Kendrick shrugged, unconcerned. “Let him come. Let him interfere. That just makes the challenge more interesting. If Briella fails him, if she falters, it will all become his problem too. And we both know he can’t stand her being hurt—or challenged—but can he really change her? Can he really control her like we once might have?” George remained silent, knowing the conversation had reached dangerous territory. Jennifer’s grip on her teacup tightened. Kendrick leaned forward, voice low and venomous. “I’ll make sure she knows that standing up to us comes with consequences. The question is… how long can she last before the cracks start showing? And when she does, will Marcellus be enough to protect her, or will he be powerless to stop it?” The three of them sat there in silence, a sense of unease settling in the room like a heavy fog. The game had begun, and the Tristan family had made their first move. Outside, the world continued in blissful ignorance, unaware of the storm that was about to hit Briella and Marcellus. .... ✨ End of Chapter Twenty-two ✨
