Chapter 3

Aunt Laiza was so spooked by the old madam's reaction that she nodded over and over so fast her head bobbled. Her voice was shaking like a leaf. "It's true, Old Madam. We saw it clear as day. Miss Audrey only took her own suitcase. She didn't touch a single other thing." Crack. Old Madam shot to her feet so fast her skirt swished. She grabbed a maid's arm for support, and stormed toward the master bedroom I had been staying in, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. Evelyn trailed right on her heels. Her face looked perfectly calm, but a tiny flicker of unease crept into the depths of her eyes. My room had always been neat and uncluttered, but right then it was just plain empty. The nightstand was spotless, not a single stray item left on it. The vanity had none of the extra skincare products or jewelry that used to sit there. Over in the walk-in closet, all the high-end custom dresses, limited-edition bags, and matching jewelry sets the Fox family had bought for me hung exactly where they had always been, neat as a pin, not a single piece missing. Only my few everyday clothes and a handful of tattered old books were gone, vanished without a trace. Old Madam Fox immediately ordered someone to do a full check of all the valuables in the villa. The maid came back in no time to report that I had only taken the belongings that belonged to me, and had not touched a single thing belonging to the Fox family. Old Madam Fox stood there in the hollow, empty room, her face shifting from livid green to ashen white, so angry she could barely breathe. She could not hold back the snarl that burst out of her. "Ungrateful little wretch! If she wanted to leave, fine! What's with the holier-than-thou act?" But deep down, she knew better than anyone. She had always looked down on me, convinced I was only clinging to this marriage because I was after the Fox family's money and status. Now I had left quickly and clean, turning my back on all the wealth and privilege of this rich family like it was nothing. It felt like a loud, stinging slap right across her face. The surrounding servants all hung their heads, too scared to make even a tiny peep, but every single one of them was secretly stunned. None of them had expected that Mrs. Fox, the girl from a small, ordinary family they had all looked down on behind her back, would have this kind of backbone. Evelyn hurried forward, gently holding Old Mrs. Fox by the arm. Her voice was so soft it could melt butter. "Old Mrs. Fox, don't work yourself up over this. It is bad for your health. Audrey leaving just means she did not know what a good thing she had. I will be here to keep you company from now on." As she spoke, she handed over a warm towel, so sweet and thoughtful you could not pick a single hole in her perfect little act. Old Mrs. Fox's expression softened a little. She sighed and patted Evelyn's hand. "You're always the thoughtful one, a hundred times better than Audrey. She can spout all that pretty talk about not caring for the Fox family's wealth, but didn't she still take the two hundred million Finley gave her? At the end of the day, she's just another gold digger." The second those words left Old Mrs. Fox's mouth, the smile on Evelyn's face froze solid. "Two hundred million?" Evelyn gasped, her breath catching as her eyes widened. She was rooted to the spot, every drop of blood in her veins turning to ice. She had only bribed Lucas to send messages and the divorce papers, mimicking Finley's tone, right? She had never had access to Finley's funds this entire time, let alone the ability to pull out two hundred million! Who on earth had given me that money? A terrifying thought exploded in her head, and a wave of gut-churning unease washed over her entire body. Her original plan had been simple: make me throw a screaming fit after being tricked into getting divorced, turn everyone in the house against me, then slide right into the position of Mrs. Fox without a hitch. But now? I had not just walked away clean and carefree. I had vanished entirely with two hundred million dollars in my pocket. Nothing was going the way she had scripted it. Evelyn forced down the panic rising in her chest and kept that sweet smile plastered on her face. Still, her fingertips were ice-cold, and her heart had plummeted straight into her stomach. ***** Meanwhile, I had already arrived in London with my parents. The city felt cool and breezy, with a crispness in the air and a fast, lively pace everywhere you looked. There was none of the suffocating pressure and constant scheming you found in the Capital. It was exactly the safe haven I had been craving. Outside the window, the streets buzzed with nonstop traffic and foot traffic. Inside, my family chatted softly around me. There were no cold, stuffy rich family rules to follow, no snide side-eye and mockery from strangers, just quiet, steady comfort. I closed my eyes, my heart perfectly calm and clear. A life like this was ten thousand times more precious than that empty title of Mrs. Fox. Before I knew it, half a year flew by in the blink of an eye. I stayed in London, taking it easy and caring for my pregnancy. My belly grew bigger with each passing day, and all three of my babies were perfectly healthy and growing right on track. End of Audrey's POV Meanwhile, all the way back in the Capital, Finley Fox had just wrapped up a top-secret overseas project that had kept him gone for six whole months, and he was finally home. But he quickly realized his wife had not called him even once in the past six months. Not a single message, nothing at all. Finley stepped off his private jet, sharp in a tailored black suit. His brows and eyes were frosty, and the oppressive aura rolling off him screamed 'stay the hell away' to anyone nearby. Lucas had been waiting at the airport long before his arrival, his face drained of color, his palms soaked through with sweat. He had only just found out from the family doctor that Mrs. Fox was pregnant. He had sent people out to look for her nonstop, but she had vanished without a trace. Finley slid into the back of the car and spoke in that cool, unreadable tone of his. "What has happened at home these past six months? Spit it out, every last detail." Lucas froze up like a statue, his voice shaking so bad he could barely get the words out. "Mr. Fox, the good news is... Mrs. Fox is pregnant with triplets, but..." "But what?" Finley demanded, his brow furrowing as he leaned forward, pinning his assistant with an icy glare. "But... Mrs. Fox has already signed the divorce papers with you..." Finley's eyes darkened sharply, and the air in the car dropped to freezing point in an instant. He had never had any intention of getting a divorce. He had never even ordered anyone to send her a divorce agreement, for that matter. The car pulled up to the Fox family villa. He headed straight to his study once he got inside, and a neatly folded divorce agreement sat right on his desk. Finley glanced down at it. At the bottom of the page, the signature was crisp and unmistakable. Audrey Ellis.
