64 The Shadow Monsters

“David left already, are you all still going to stay here?” Peter asked.   Everyone was confused because David left, but they didn’t seem to be affected by it anyhow. Peter hoped some people would be scared. By then, it would be easy for him to persuade them.   “Peter, we can’t just leave. Josh’s body is still here. We can’t just leave him,” Zack said. “And I wanted to believe you, but I don’t see any harm around this town.”   Ray agreed. “If this is because of the rumors going around about this town, Don’t believe them. It’s just a rumor. It couldn’t be true.”   Zack nodded. “Stop being paranoid and let’s just wait for the next morning.”   At that time, he felt like he lost all his friends. He couldn’t believe out of all people he expected to believe him, Ray and Zack would be one of them who wouldn’t. In the end, it was his battle and he was alone.   “Then we can just bring his body out of this town. It’s easy. The casket car is outside. We can just use it whenever we want to. Let’s just leave,” Peter pleaded.   Ray and Zack looked at each other and Peter couldn’t believe that they wouldn’t even try to believe him. “You know what? I’m done here. If I couldn’t persuade any of you, then I’ll just leave alone,” he said, annoyed.   He didn’t wait for anyone to tell him anything and walked outside. When he stepped outside, he realized that the sun was already gone. The sky still had its light, though, but it looked like few more minutes and the sky would turn dark.   He got to his car and with one last look at the mansion, he started driving away from it.   He continued driving until he reached down the mountain, and out to the village.   At the corner of his eye, he saw something in the shadow. So he stopped abruptly on the brake and looked at the window of his car. There, he saw an old-looking house, and outside of it was a dog house. There, a dog was growling and barking somewhere as it continued to try and break from its chain.   Peter saw a shadow at another house, but it was levitating and translucent. Although it was dark, he could tell that his eyes weren’t playing tricks on him.   His guts weren’t wrong. He knew something bad was to happen.   “Emma Bently,” he mumbled, cursing her name. He knew Emma was up to no good. He knew something was odd about her the moment he knew that he came to Josh a month before he died. If only he raised his suspicion higher and he kept a strict eye on her, he probably made a difference.   And if only he knew earlier about Emma coming to Josh, then he would’ve warned Josh about the danger that she was bringing to him.   He watched the shadow approach the dog and when it was near, he felt bad to let it be so he unbuckled his seat belt. “Damn it,” he said in annoyance. The idea of leaving the dog was tickling his conscience and he thought that if he would leave the dog alone and it died, he would never forget about it.   He went out of his car and ran to the dog. Fortunately, the dog was sociable so he easily untied the dog and brought it to his car. The shadow now found him as a target. He quickly swerved and drove off out of that particular house.   When he was about two houses away from the shadow, he was glad that he left and continued driving while buckling the seat belt. With one hand on the steering wheel, his other hand worked on buckling the dog beside him.   They were trying to leave but just after he passed two more houses, he abruptly stepped on the brake because someone stopped them.   He saw another shadow he now called the shadow monster and when the lights of his car hit the shadow, the shadow monster made a screeching scream and floats away faster than how it normally approaches things. He wasn’t sure, but he presumed that the shadow monsters must’ve been scared of the light by the way it reacted to his car light.   Based on what he saw, he assumed that those shadow monsters possess and attach to any creature. The way it approached the dog and him, they looked like they wanted to find hosts rather than wanting to eat the creature. Because they were translucent.   As Peter could tell, they were like a spirit.   When he saw who stopped them from leaving, he was surprised because it was David Colt who just left the mansion earlier. He was on the other side of the car, he had walked away in front of his car and stayed by the darkness.   He looked at him and he just stayed there, looking so weird.   He thought why would David stay in the dark when the shadow monster was just there earlier.   He wasn’t sure if he was in his normal state so he just left him there and decided to look around the small town to see what was happening. Aside from the two shadow monsters he encountered, he didn’t see anything else around. Or maybe he just couldn’t see.   He grew anxious, so he decided to recall that one magic spell he randomly learned at some time he couldn’t really remember.   It was a magic spell to possess a special vision based on what you prefer to see.   North, south, east, west. Winds up close, come to my presence. The spirits of visions, Let my eyes see the unknown.   He chanted in Orrinatta language thinking about seeing the shadow monsters and when he opened his eyes, he hurried and opened all the lights in his car. “Holy s**t,” he cussed to see shadows around the place. They would float away when the lights on his car would reach them.   He was thankful that he refueled his car full. It wouldn’t be his problem later.   Although no shadow monster was bothering him because of his car’s lights, he still felt anxious at seeing the shadow monsters’ red eyes looking at him like he was their prey.   Suddenly, he saw something coming his way. A car was going to crash to him.   His eyes widened. “What the hell!” he screamed as he drove away from that place and although it made no difference because shadow monsters were still around, he just got safe from another car.   The car’s engine wasn’t turned on and he was sure that it was the shadow monster’s doings. The shadow monsters somehow managed to lift that car and threw it on his way.   At this rate, he wasn’t sure if he was to be safe in the next minutes. His car lights were the only thing that illuminated the town; everything was dark. He looked at the dog who looked terrified.   “Is there no electricity in this town?” he asked the dog and chuckled when he found it stupid that he was talking to a dog now. “It’s either I die here or I come back alive and insane,” he said to himself.   The more he thought of it, the more he started to think Emma had something to do with the shadow monsters. He didn’t know what kind of a person she was, but he just knew. It was either she managed to fake the last part of Josh’s will for it to look identical to his handwriting or she forced her to include that part on the will.   The shadow monsters were the motive of the will, Peter suspects. It was that, or it could be another motive. But then again, he couldn’t think of any gain Emma was looking for killing Josh and now, trying to kill everyone that he was close to.   He swore he wouldn’t let it pass when he’d see Emma again. At least it made him feel determined to live. In that way, if he survived, he could look for Emma and punish her for whatever she’d done to him and Josh.   Peter thought it was not safe to stay in one place, so while he was looking for the route out of the town, he chose to roam around until he would find it. Because no matter how certain he was with the route, he was still lost.   “Where the heck am I?” he asked himself as he tried another route.   Somehow, he found himself back at the place where he was nearly thrown by a car. He quickly passed by that place and by the end of the road, he saw David from afar, at that same place where he last saw him.   He was just there, standing still like he was stoned.   In the middle of driving, he realized that his car was slowing down. “Oh, no.” He said and unbuckled himself quickly before he took his torchlight by his dashboard in case something happened.    Slowly, his car lights started to flicker. And unexpectedly, his car engine turned off.   “Shit.”
