83 Confrontation Of The Parties

1763 Words
“We came here to attend our friend’s funeral,” Peter suddenly said.   “What?” Beth asked, confused as to what Peter was suddenly saying.   Peter sighed. “We’re just here to attend our friend’s funeral for his wake. Edgar Lee’s lawyer called us to go here for our friend’s sudden death,” he started. “But then, at night, that lawyer disappeared. I know she escaped. She saved her ass because she knew something was meant to happen,” he said.   Beth’s eyebrows creased. “What’s her name?”   “Emma Bently,” Peter said, his voice sounding spiteful just saying that name. If he had a chance, he would do everything to find her and punish her if he proved she was guilty of killing Josh.   Beth looked at Bryan, and he just shrugged. She sighed. “We never heard that name before. It could be a different party for a specific purpose. They could be working for another party. That setup is kinda known when summoning is involved,” she explained.   “Shadow monsters appeared and attacked us. They were after the book. It was the only thing they could be after,” he said.   “That’s why you should know who to give your book to. If it’s handed to people who have deep evil plans, then it could be a disaster. That’s why we’re here to get and recycle the book. So we should give it to the right owner,” Beth said. “Please, just give it to us. You’re making yourself in trouble,” she said, this time her voice sounding like a threat.   How could he easily trust her? How could he easily trust anyone? They all had their own purpose, but Peter couldn’t figure out if they were after bad or good thing for the book.   He was thinking about the right decision he should make when he noticed something in the corner of his eyes—a distinct movement on the floor. Shadows were roaming on the ground. He flashed his torchlights at the ground, and the shadows moved away.   Another hostile party was there; Peter thought it was the same as shadow monsters, only that it didn’t look too dangerous. Or he couldn’t just tell yet.   Behind Beth, Bryan, and the group of strangers in funny costumes, another group came. They were wearing decent clothes, everything was black, and they were wearing the same-looking coats. Peter didn’t know who the heck was these people.   The third group was called Dark Abyss Regiment. They were known to negotiate with shadow creatures, whether they’re hostile or not, from the Rossandro, the world of shadows. A group of disciples assembled them from different parties.   Beth chuckled at the sight of the Dark Abyss Regiment. “This is new. This is the second time I’ve seen you all my life. You’re known to come out of your lair rarely. If last time was an accident, what is it now?”   “You know what we’re after, and we all have no difference. We’re after the same thing, and we won’t let anyone but us get that,” one of them said. Compared to everyone who came for the book, they looked like they were the oldest. They looked like on their mid-forties to their fifties.   Peter watched them in entertainment and amusement. Three parties are fighting over the book. It made him think that he had no one to trust. None of them looked like they deserved the book.   “Who are these people, anyway?” the Dark Abyss Regiment member asked, eyeing the people in funny costumes. “Are you guys new?”   One of the guys in funny costume spoke, “We’re not allowed to disclose our identity. We are dressed like this for a purpose,” he said. “We’re here for the book.   The Dark Abyss Regiment members laughed. Beth and Bryan weren’t happy about anything, and they chose to stay quiet. “Yeah, great. What a way to get a good impression,” the Dark Abyss Regiment member commented. “But you guys knew we’re not here for fun, right? We’re after the real thing here. We’re serious,” at one gesture of that same guy speaking who seemed to be the leader. The shadows emerged from the ground, which alerted Beth and Bryan. They took their weapons.   The unknown group who was wearing funny costumes was alert as well. They drew their semi-transparent swords from their arms, which surprised Peter. He knew they would be after him soon.   He ran back to everyone else and stayed there.   “What’s happening, now?” Linda asked. “We should do something about them.”   Peter nodded. “I know, I’m thinking. But prepare yourselves. I can’t protect everyone,” he said.   “Should you summon something. A weapon?” Ray asked. He added, “I have a sword with me, but rather than us, you’re the one who needs a weapon the most. They’re after you and that book.”   Peter looked at his friend. He was right. He watched as everyone was fighting a few meters from them. The three parties didn’t look like they could be stopped. They were proving who should take the book from Peter.   He didn’t want to wait for that time to come. He had to act quickly and decide what to do. But he didn’t want to use the book. He had to do something else. Using the book might make it more complicated for him since those parties would easily target the book he was holding. If they saw that he was holding the book, they might think of attacking him simultaneously. One versus sixteen people was just too much for him.   He should think of another way.   “What would you do, Peter?” Zack asked.   Peter looked at Zack and Ray before he fastened the straps of his back on his shoulder, as well as clipping them together by his abdomen and chest. He was just glad that he chose that bag.   “What are you doing?” Zack asked.   “Cover me. I’ll summon something,” he said. Everyone surrounded Peter. Ray was standing by the front line since he was the only one who had a weapon. Just in case they decide to attack Peter. Fortunately, they were too distracted in fighting each other and barely noticed that Peter was now summoning.   After forming the circle, Peter summoned a sword. Unlike Ray’s, the one he summoned was just an ordinary sword. It was made out of the strongest steel. Yeah, he should also make use of the things he learned from that book he acquired from the goblin. The one that demigod Barros used.   He quickly closed the summoning circle and went to the front, gathering everyone’s attention.   “In my hand, I hold this sword until I finish this spell. This sword must be one with my body and soul. This sword must obey my call,” he chanted in Orrinatta's language. It was the “owning of the sword” as the first step written in the book. He was fortunate he clearly remembered.   “In my hand, guide me with your warm light. Through my hand, protect me with your light,” It was a random spell he thought of, thinking light beams coming through his hands as another weapon.   The three parties stopped with what they were doing and looked at Peter. To Peter, they looked stupid with all those bruises and wounds fighting for the book. The group wearing funny costumes received fatal injuries, and they were mostly on the ground.   The white beam was surrounding Peter’s left hand, and everyone was in awe. But it didn’t scare the three parties coming for the book. “If you don’t want to be hurt, just give us the book,” one of the members of the Dark Abyss Regiment said.   “You’re making the wrong choice. Please, don’t make this hard for every one of us. You’re making the wrong decision,” Beth pleaded, almost sounding desperate. “If you give it to them, this will be a big disaster. Everyone will suffer if the book gets in the hand of the evil people!” she yelled. Her voice changed out of annoyance. “If that book ended up in the hands of these old men, I’d make sure you regret it,” she warned.   Peter grinned. “Those things you all said, they were one of the reasons why I don’t want to give it to anyone,” he said. “I don’t know any of you. I only knew Beth and Bryan but only their names. You’re still a stranger,” he said and looked at Zack and Ray. They nodded and attacked the parties first.   Peter was fighting the leader of the Dark Abyss Regiment. Ray and Zack were fighting Beth and Bryan. The other Dark Abyss Regiment members were attacking Peter, but he was quick enough to use his left hand to fire a beam at them, knocking them on the ground.   It wasn’t as fatal, just as Peter wanted. He didn’t want it to be so powerful that it could easily kill. He just needed power that was enough for a blow that would knock someone to the ground.   So far, while he was still fighting the Dark Abyss Regiment leader, he knocked out three of their members to the ground, making them lose their consciousness.   Ray knocked Beth to the ground, and he couldn’t help but apologize. Zack and Ray took Bryan hostage.   Peter finally knocked the leader to the ground, injuring the elder’s leg. Everyone else was on the ground, bearing their pains.   Peter ran to Ray and Zack. He pointed his sword at Bryan’s throat. He looked at Beth.   “Let us through, or else your friend dies.”
