Chapter 8: The Silver Moon’s Power

584 Words
The midnight road was a blur of black trees and heavy rain. We were only thirty miles from the Nightshade border, the safety of Killian’s territory almost within reach. Leo and Aria were fast asleep in the back seat, their small heads leaning against each other. Suddenly, Killian’s body went rigid. His nostrils flared. "Brace yourself!" BOOM! A massive silver-tipped spear slammed into the hood of our SUV, sending sparks flying. The car screeched, spinning across the wet asphalt before slamming into a tree. "Elena! Are the kids okay?" Killian growled, his eyes already turning obsidian. "They're shaken, but alive," I gasped, checking the twins. They were crying, their small heartbeats racing. Outside, a dozen shadows emerged from the forest. They weren't pack wolves; they were the Blood-Claw Mercenaries, cold-blooded killers who wore silver-lined armor to burn any werewolf they touched. "Stay in the car," Killian commanded. He stepped out, his shadow aura exploding outward like a tidal wave of darkness. Two mercenaries rushed him, but Killian snapped their necks before they could even scream. But then, I saw him. A sniper on a ridge, aiming a glowing silver bolt—not at Killian, but at the back seat. At my children. "NO!" I screamed. Something inside me snapped. It wasn't the sound of a bone breaking; it was the sound of a seal shattering. For five years, I had suppressed my true nature to hide from Kael. But to save my children, I would become a monster. I burst out of the car. Instead of shifting into a wolf, my entire body began to glow with a blinding, ethereal silver light. The rain around me didn't just fall—it froze in mid-air. The sniper fired. The silver bolt sped toward the car window. I raised my hand, and a shield of pure lunar energy manifested, shattering the bolt into dust. The mercenaries froze, their eyes wide. "A Lunar Priestess?" one whispered in terror. "I thought they were extinct!" I didn't give them time to think. I moved with a speed no Alpha could match. I wasn't just fighting; I was dancing in a whirlwind of silver fire. Every time I touched a mercenary, they were thrown back by a concussive blast of moonlight. Killian watched, stunned, as I tore through the remaining attackers. When the last mercenary fell, I stood in the middle of the road, my hair glowing white and my eyes two twin moons of silver. Killian stepped toward me cautiously. "Elena... your scent... it's changing." The adrenaline began to fade, and I felt the exhaustion hitting me like a truck. The silver light dimmed, and I collapsed. Killian caught me before I hit the ground, his arms wrapping around me with a grip that said he would never let go. "You're not an omega," he whispered into my hair, his voice filled with awe and a new kind of intensity. "You're the lost Lunar Queen." I looked up at him, my vision blurring. "Now you know why I had to run, Killian. If the world finds out what I am... if Kael finds out..." "I won't let them," Killian promised, his voice a low, lethal vow. "But Elena, the Silver Moon Pack didn't just reject a mate. They rejected a Goddess. And when they realize their mistake, the war won't just be about the children. It will be for the world." In the distance, the howl of a Silver Moon scout echoed. They were close. Kael was coming.
