Back in the Alpha’s office of the Silver Moon Pack, the air was thick with tension. Kael was pacing like a caged beast, his knuckles white from clenching his fists. The scent of Elena—and that mysterious, powerful pup scent—was still burned into his nostrils.
"Kael, honey, you're overreacting," Chloe said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness as she leaned against his desk. She was filing her nails, but her eyes were darting nervously. "She’s just an omega who found a rich protector. She probably hired those kids to trick you."
"Shut up, Chloe!" Kael roared, slamming his hand on the desk. The wood cracked under his strength. "I know my own blood. I felt the pull. It was faint because I rejected her, but it was there."
Chloe flinched, her face contorting into a mask of rage. She had spent five years making everyone forget Elena. She couldn't let that "trash" come back and ruin her life.
"Even if they are yours," Chloe hissed, stepping closer to him, "she is with Killian Thorne now. Do you want to start a war with the Shadow Alpha for an omega you threw away? The elders will strip you of your title!"
Kael stopped pacing. He looked out the window toward the hotel where Elena was staying. "She lied to me. She left while carrying my heirs. If those children are Alphas, they belong to this pack. They belong to me."
"They are bastards, Kael! Not heirs!" Chloe screamed.
But Kael wasn't listening. He picked up his phone and dialed his Head Enforcer. "Follow them. I don't care if Thorne’s guards are there. I want a DNA sample from those children. And I want to know everywhere Elena Vance has been for the last five years."
As Kael stormed out of the room, Chloe’s expression turned deadly. She pulled out a small, burner phone from her silk robe. She couldn't let Kael find out the truth. If those kids were legitimate Alphas, she would be kicked out of the pack house by morning.
"Hello?" Chloe whispered into the phone when someone picked up. "The 'problem' is back. I need the Blood-Claw mercenaries. Yes... the woman and the two pups. I want them handled before they reach the Nightshade border. Make it look like a rogue attack."
A cruel smile spread across her red lips. "If I can't be the Luna of the Silver Moon, then no one will. Especially not that little omega and her brats."
Meanwhile, at the hotel, I was packing our bags in frantic silence. Killian was on the phone, barking orders to his elite guard.
"The wind is changing, Elena," Killian said, coming up behind me and placing a hand on my shoulder. "I can smell the rot. Chloe is desperate, and Kael is obsessed. We leave in ten minutes. No lights, no sirens. We disappear into the shadows."
I looked at my sleeping children. My heart was heavy with dread. The revenge I wanted was starting, but the price was getting higher.
"Killian," I whispered, "if they come for us..."
"Then I will show them why they call me the Shadow Alpha," he promised, his eyes glowing with a dark, protective fire. "I’ve spent five years keeping you safe. I’m not stopping now."
