Chapter Eight

1638 Words
***3 years later*** With the war long behind us, everyone is still restoring everything that was destroyed during it and trying to get back to their normal lives. We are still living in the flat we rented three years ago when we were finding a way to put an end to the war; we all have decent jobs even though they may not be in fields we like or wanted, to us it is a job to support us. I am still saving up to get a nice, lovely country house with a good amount of land to live on. It seems like everyone is thoroughly enjoying the sunshine we have today and the peacefulness of being able to go in the park and meet up with people just like in the good old days. Robert and I are walking through the parks seeing children playing happily and thoroughly enjoying themselves which brings a smile to my face knowing we had a helping hand in all of this. After about an hour we head back to the flat so we can get food ready for when Derek comes back as he works later than the two of us. As we get in, I drop my bag on the chair and head into the bathroom to wash up while Robert gets a start on making tea. I walk out and set up the kitchen table ready to be eaten at. With the food nearly ready the front door opens and in walks a very tired looking Derek. “Long day Derek.” I ask him. “You could say that, just had to quit working there since the new boss came into play, they have made cuts and I was not going to work under someone with really bad morals for the company.” He explains. “Do not blame you to be fair, Robert and I can look after the bills and stuff for the meantime while you look for somewhere new as we get paid a decent amount.” I state. “Thanks such good friends you two are, I will start a job search in the morning. Celeste, just do not go into your savings to provide for us.” He says dropping his stuff in his room. “I won’t as I’m sure it won’t come to that.” I say as we all sit at the kitchen table and dig into our tea before we head to bed for a long day of work tomorrow. ***8 hours later*** Robert and I wake up to our alarm going off so we can get to work on time since it has been a while since we had a proper sleeping schedule and something to actually get up for. We crawl out of bed, and each take it in turns in the bathroom to get ready before getting breakfast and heading off to work. I work in a small café just a block away from the apartment block, lovely place, pays well and the tips are great from the lovely people who come in. Robert works at a Law firm maintaining the IT department in the city. Derek wakes up a couple of hours after we leave. He gets some breakfast and pulls out the laptop and places it on the kitchen table. He starts his job search looking for something that will not take too long with the hiring process as he does not want to fee useless around the flat when it comes to the financial support. ***8 hours later*** I walk into the flat to see it has been cleaned and food is being cooked, smells like Italian. I walk into the kitchen to get a drink to see that Derek is cooking and cleaning the kitchen. “See you’ve been busy today.” I say grabbing a bottle of cola. “Well, I thought since I have done some job searching and thought I would do some sort of keep around here instead of leaving it all up to you.” He states finishing up the cleaning. “It is fine you know I do not mind.” I state. “It is not entirely fine at all I see you tire yourself out completely some days and you need to take a break too. We boys need to pull our weight around here more than we do already do.” He explains. With that conversation said, I take my drink and sit on the couch and place my work file on the table along with my bottle. I pull my laptop out from under the table and get on with some work as I need to file the invoices from the café by the end of the month. After about half an hour Robert walks through the door plonking his stuff by the door and walks into the bathroom to clean up before plonking himself next to me. “Dare I ask what all the papers are scattered across the table?” Robert says. “Oh, they are just invoices from the café which I need to get filed and sent off before the end of the month.” I explain. “Oh, thought you had them all done.” He states. “Nope. I have been busy doing the upkeep of this place and did not realize until Derek told me earlier.” I again explain. “I am so sorry I will do a lot more than just cooking around here. Since three of us live here not just two guys and a house maid.” Robert says apologetically. I look at Robert and let out a chuckle before getting back to the invoice filing while waiting for Derek to finish the food. Ten minutes later Derek shouts through saying the food is ready so Robert and I get off the couch and head over to the kitchen table and wait for Derek to bring our food out. Derek sits down with his plate, and we all dig into this lovely Italian dish that Derek kindly made. With dinner done I get back to filing those invoices as I only have two days to send them off and both days I am working. Robert clears the kitchen table and washes the dishes before heading in the bath. Derek sits down in the chair with his laptop to do some more job searches presumably. ***2 hours later*** With the invoices done I decided to head to bed and get some rest before work tomorrow as Fridays always seem to get busy. A few moments later Robert joins me in bed, and I hear Derek heading to his room probably to sleep. ***8 hours later*** I wake up to the sound of the annoying alarm clock, I turn over and slam the off button and roll out of bed and do the usual routine and then head off to work with Robert in tow. Derek gets up and continues his job search before heading out into town to get a few things and pay the rent with the last of his money. ***8 hours pass*** Robert and I walk into the flat at the same time, I head into the kitchen to fix some food for the three of us, while Robert gets some work done. Derek walks in the door shortly after we do with some shopping bags and an envelope of money. “What’s with the envelope?” I ask him. “It is the last of my money which I am going to use to pay this months’ rent with.” Derek explains. “You do not have to do that you know, why not keep it and spend it on something for yourself as a treat.” I suggest to him. “I did consider that but then I would rather use the last of it as a contribution towards the financial situation for this month. I have a few job interviews around the town this week so hopefully I shouldn’t be unemployed for much longer.” He explains further. ***3 months later*** I managed to save up half of the money that I need for my lovely dream country house. Derek has managed to get himself two part-time jobs as it is all he could managed to get himself at this moment in time. Robert has managed to get his own business up and running with the help of the IT department in the law firm for giving him some pointers. I managed to control the abilities I have currently discovered as well as the shifting when I get angry. Each day has been the same to the point where the routine is starting to get annoying. The routine of get up, go to work, get home, eat, and sleep. Every so often I travel back to Durham to visit my adoptive parents to make sure they are safe and happy. Robert and Derek return to the flat after a few days of hunting as something to do, only hunting in areas that are permitting it, while I just sit around trying to figure out how to see my home planet just to see what it is like or is everyone on there now just as hateful as the people who started the war on my 18th birthday. If you are wondering why there isn’t much conversation between me and Kia is that it’s been so busy with the rebuild of our lives Kia has just taken the back seat and keeping low for a bit, she hasn’t disappeared she is just being quiet. She may come up more from here on out through so do not worry.
