Chapter 3

709 Words
I had once looked forward to this baby's arrival with all my heart. But now, I had no idea how I was supposed to face this child. I got up and turned on the computer I hadn't touched in years. Chloe: Q, help me dig up everything you can on Mia. Q: You're finally back online. It's been seven years. I thought you were dead. Don't worry. Consider it done. Chloe: Book me a flight to your country for next Friday night. Q: Seriously?! After seven years, you finally came to your senses! I've never found anyone with your kind of talent. Hurry up and come over. My company needs you. Back then, even though I was studying in the countryside, I taught myself programming to help support my family. I met Q while helping someone solve a problem on an online forum. He was the CEO of a publicly traded company and had always thought highly of me. He'd invited me to work in his country several times. But later, I became afraid Wesley would look down on me for doing something he considered beneath him. So I hadn't touched that computer in seven years. Ten minutes later, as I watched the video Q sent me, I finally managed my first relieved smile in days. I really couldn't tell which man was which in the video. But it didn't matter. As long as someone else could tell them apart. Chloe: One more thing. Have a car waiting for me Friday afternoon. I'm running away. Q: Got it. Wesley had hired a world-famous designer to create a custom dress just for me. When it came to appearances, he never cut corners. On the day of my birthday party, a man sat smoking on the couch outside the dressing room. "My wife would look beautiful in anything." His voice was cool and detached. So it must be Wesley. The designer reminded me, "Mrs. Wynn, you should watch your diet a little. Look at your lower belly. You've put on quite a bit of weight." Wesley suddenly sat up straight. "Chloe, you haven't been feeling unwell lately, have you?" I gave him a shy smile. "I've just been eating more than usual. I'm a little bloated, that's all. I'm fine." His eyes swept over my stomach, studying it carefully. In the end, he said nothing. Then he remembered the doctor's warning that pregnant women shouldn't be exposed to secondhand smoke and quietly stubbed out his cigarette. Once I was finished getting ready, I sat on the couch to rest. The door opened. The moment Wesley saw who had walked in, his expression darkened. He looked at me suspiciously, then remembered that I had prosopagnosia and couldn't tell the two brothers apart. Only then did he relax. "What are you doing here?" His tone was far from friendly. The man looked completely innocent. "The stylist asked me to bring this necklace over." He held out his hand, and only then did Wesley notice the jewelry box. The man walked over to me. "Miss, let me put it on for you." I nodded without saying a word. He lifted my hair, deliberately brushing against the mole at the back of my neck. That was how I knew for certain. It was Ethan. After all, he was the only one who took such perverse pleasure in teasing me like that. "That's enough. Get out. I'll put it on her." Wesley's face darkened as he snatched the necklace from Ethan and gently fastened it around my neck. For a split second, Ethan's obedient facade cracked. But he quickly composed himself. "Okay." He turned and walked out. Just before leaving, however, he shot me an unabashedly heated look. Inside the ballroom, the Wynn family had invited nearly everyone from high society. Wesley took my hand. "Chloe, relax. I'm right here." At that moment, he looked like a genuinely loving husband. As if he hadn't ordered Ethan to take his place beside me all these years. As if he hadn't agreed to let Mia humiliate me at my own birthday party. I played along. "With you by my side, I'm not afraid of anything." 'After all, in just a little while, you'll be the one who's afraid.'
