The File That Shouldn’t Exist

752 Words
Anaya didn’t wait anymore. That night changed everything. No more questions without answers. No more silence. If Arjun wouldn’t tell her the truth— She would find it herself. The next morning, the mansion felt the same. Quiet. Cold. But Anaya wasn’t the same. She walked through the hallway with purpose, her eyes observing everything carefully. Every corner, every door, every detail she had ignored before now felt important. Secrets were hidden here. She was sure of it. And she just needed to find where. “Ma’am, do you need anything?” A house staff member’s voice interrupted her thoughts. Anaya turned slightly. “Yes,” she said calmly. “Arjun’s study… where is it?” The staff hesitated for a second. Then replied carefully. “Second floor, end of the corridor. But sir doesn’t allow anyone inside.” Anaya gave a small nod. “That’s fine.” But inside— She had already decided. The study door stood tall and closed. Locked. Of course. Anaya looked around. Empty hallway. No one watching. Her heart started beating faster. She tried the handle. Nothing. Locked. She exhaled slowly. Thinking. Then— Her eyes moved to a small keypad beside the door. Password protected. “Of course,” she whispered. For a moment, she almost gave up. But then— A thought crossed her mind. She typed a number. His birthday. Error. She tried again. Her birthday. Error. Frustration built. Then suddenly— Another idea. The date of the accident. Her fingers trembled slightly as she entered it. A soft beep. And then— The lock clicked open. Anaya froze. Her breath caught. That couldn’t be a coincidence. The room was dark. Quiet. Heavy. She stepped inside slowly. The door closed behind her. And instantly— She felt it. This room held secrets. The shelves were filled with files, documents, and folders. Everything looked organized. Controlled. Just like him. Anaya walked toward the desk. Her fingers traced the surface lightly. Then— She saw it. A single file. Separate from the rest. Almost like it was meant to be noticed. Her heartbeat quickened. She opened it slowly. Inside— Medical reports. Photographs. Dates. Her eyes scanned quickly. And then— They stopped. Her breath hitched. It was her father’s name. Her hands started shaking. She flipped the page. And that’s when she saw it. A report. Marked confidential. “Impact caused by external vehicle. High-speed side collision.” Her mind raced. External vehicle. That meant— Another car. Not just an accident. Her chest tightened painfully. She turned the page again. Another document. A payment record. Large amount. Transferred. Dated the same night. Her vision blurred. “What is this…” she whispered. Then— A photograph slipped out from the file. It fell to the floor. Anaya bent down quickly and picked it up. And the moment she looked at it— Everything inside her stopped. It was a picture of the accident scene. Her father’s car. Damaged. Broken. And just behind it— A black car. Partially visible. But clear enough. Her fingers tightened around the photo. She knew that car. She had seen it before. Recently. Very recently. Her breath became uneven. “No…” she whispered. That car— It belonged to Arjun. “You weren’t supposed to see that.” The voice came from behind her. Low. Cold. Dangerous. Anaya froze. Slowly— She turned. Arjun stood at the door. His eyes locked onto the file in her hands. His expression unreadable. But his presence— Overwhelming. “How long have you been in here?” he asked. His voice calm. Too calm. Anaya didn’t answer. Instead— She held up the photograph. Her hands shaking. “This is your car,” she said. Her voice breaking slightly. Silence filled the room. Heavy. Sharp. “Say something,” she demanded. Arjun didn’t move. Didn’t speak. And that silence— Was louder than any confession. “You were there,” she said. Her eyes filled with tears. “You were part of this.” “No,” he said finally. But his voice— Wasn’t strong enough. “Don’t lie to me!” she shouted. Her emotions broke free. “You followed his car. You were there before the accident. And now this—” Her voice cracked. “What did you do, Arjun?” The question echoed. But this time— There was no escape. No silence to hide behind. Because the truth— Was already in her hands.
