The Woman Who Knew Too Much

756 Words
Anaya couldn’t focus on anything that morning. The message. The way Arjun reacted. And those words— “You’re finally becoming interesting.” It didn’t feel normal. Nothing about him felt normal. He wasn’t angry that she saw the message. He wasn’t scared. If anything… he seemed amused. That thought made her uneasy. Very uneasy. A sudden sound of heels clicking echoed through the hall. Sharp. Confident. Unfamiliar. Anaya looked up. A woman was walking toward her. Tall. Elegant. Dressed perfectly, as if she belonged to this world. To his world. Her eyes met Anaya’s. And in that one look— There was judgment. And something else. Something like… certainty. “You must be Anaya,” the woman said with a slight smile. Her voice was smooth. Controlled. But not warm. “Yes,” Anaya replied, standing up slowly. “And you are?” The woman tilted her head slightly. As if amused. “Riya.” She didn’t add anything more. Like her name was enough. Like she didn’t need an introduction. Anaya felt it instantly. This woman was not just a guest. She was important. “Arjun didn’t tell you about me?” Riya asked casually. Anaya shook her head. “No.” A small smile appeared on Riya’s lips. “Of course he didn’t.” There was something in her tone. Something that felt like a hidden message. Before Anaya could respond— A familiar voice spoke behind them. “What are you doing here?” Arjun. His voice was sharper than usual. Anaya turned. He was walking toward them quickly. His expression unreadable. But his eyes— Focused directly on Riya. Not her. Riya smiled. Calm. Confident. “I thought I should meet your wife,” she said. Her words were simple. But they carried weight. Arjun stopped a few steps away. “That wasn’t necessary.” “Maybe not for you,” Riya replied. “But for her?” She glanced at Anaya. That same knowing look again. Anaya felt something twist inside her. “What do you mean?” she asked. Riya didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she stepped closer. Too close. Her eyes studied Anaya carefully. “As his wife,” she said softly, “you should know what kind of man you married.” Anaya’s heartbeat increased. “I already know enough.” “Do you?” Riya’s smile deepened slightly. “Because I don’t think you know anything at all.” Silence fell. Heavy. Tense. Arjun’s voice cut through it. “That’s enough, Riya.” His tone was firm. Dangerous. But Riya didn’t seem affected. Not at all. Instead, she turned to him. “Are you sure?” she asked quietly. A pause. Then— Her next words changed everything. “Or should I remind her… about that night?” Anaya froze. Her breath stopped. That night. The words echoed loudly in her mind. Her eyes moved instantly to Arjun. His expression had changed. Completely. For the first time— He looked tense. Real tension. “Stop,” he said sharply. Riya held his gaze for a second. Then smiled. Slowly. “Relax,” she said. “I’m not here to ruin your little arrangement.” Arrangement. Again that word. But now it felt heavier. Darker. She turned back to Anaya. “But be careful,” she added softly. “Some truths don’t just hurt…” Her voice dropped slightly. “They destroy.” Anaya felt a chill run through her. Before she could say anything— Riya stepped back. “I’ll see you soon,” she said, looking at Arjun. Then she walked away. Just like that. Leaving silence behind. Anaya stood there, unmoving. Her mind racing. Her heart pounding. Her eyes slowly turned to Arjun. “Who is she?” she asked. This time— Her voice didn’t shake. But inside— Everything was shaking. Arjun didn’t answer immediately. He looked at the door where Riya had left. Then back at Anaya. His gaze heavy. Complicated. “Someone you should stay away from,” he said finally. Anaya’s brows furrowed. “And why is that?” A pause. Then— His answer came. Low. Serious. “Because she knows things…” His eyes locked onto hers. “…that you’re not ready to hear.” Anaya felt her chest tighten. But this time— She didn’t look away. Because now she was sure of one thing. This wasn’t just about curiosity anymore. This was about truth. And no matter how dangerous it was— She needed to know.
