The Night That Changed Everything

Riya’s words refused to leave Anaya’s mind. “That night…” They echoed again and again, louder each time. Anaya stood by the window long after Riya left, staring at the driveway as if answers might appear there. Behind her, Arjun remained silent. Too silent. That silence felt heavier than any argument. Finally, she turned. “Tell me the truth.” Her voice was steady. But her eyes demanded answers. Arjun didn’t respond immediately. He walked to the table, poured himself a glass of water, and took a slow sip—as if time could dilute the question. “About what?” he asked calmly. The calm irritated her. “About her. About that night. About the accident.” The word hung between them. Accident. Arjun’s hand paused for a fraction of a second. Then he set the glass down. “You’re making connections you don’t understand,” he said. “That doesn’t mean they’re wrong,” Anaya shot back. Silence. Sharp. Tense. She stepped closer. “If it’s nothing, then say it clearly,” she insisted. “Say you had nothing to do with it.” Arjun looked at her. Really looked this time. And for a brief second— There was something in his eyes. Not anger. Not coldness. Something heavier. Regret. It disappeared quickly. “You don’t need to know everything,” he said. That was enough. Anaya let out a small, humorless laugh. “That means I’m right.” “No,” he replied immediately. “It means you’re in danger.” Her breath hitched. “In danger? From what?” “From knowing too much.” The answer only made things worse. Anaya shook her head. “This is my life too,” she said. “You don’t get to decide what I should or shouldn’t know.” Arjun’s expression hardened. “You think this is about control?” he asked quietly. “Isn’t it?” she challenged. Another silence. Then— He stepped closer. “Fine,” he said. Her heart skipped. Finally. Something real. “Two years ago,” he began slowly, “there was an accident.” Anaya’s pulse raced. “I was there.” Her breath stopped. Everything inside her went still. “But not the way you think,” he added quickly. Her eyes searched his face. “Then how?” she whispered. Arjun exhaled slowly. As if choosing his words carefully. “I reached after it happened.” A pause. “I saw the car. I saw your father.” Her knees felt weak. “You… saw him?” “Yes.” “Then why didn’t you come forward?” she asked, her voice rising. “Why didn’t you tell anyone?” Arjun didn’t answer immediately. That silence was answer enough. “Because you’re hiding something,” she said. Her voice softer now. But sharper. “What are you not telling me?” Arjun’s jaw tightened. “I helped,” he said finally. “I called for medical assistance. I made sure he survived.” Anaya stared at him. Her emotions clashed. Confusion. Anger. Relief. “You saved him…” she said slowly. “Yes.” Then why— The question formed in her mind instantly. “Then why does it feel like you’re guilty?” she asked. That question hit something. Deep. Arjun’s eyes darkened. Because he was. And she could see it. Before he could respond— A voice interrupted from the doorway. “Because he didn’t tell you the whole story.” Riya. Anaya turned sharply. Riya leaned casually against the doorframe, as if she had been there long enough to hear everything. Arjun’s expression turned cold instantly. “Leave,” he said. Riya ignored him. Her eyes stayed on Anaya. “He’s right about one thing,” she said calmly. “He was there that night.” A pause. “But he didn’t just arrive after.” Anaya’s heart dropped. “What do you mean?” she asked. Riya stepped inside slowly. Each step deliberate. Dangerous. “I mean,” she said softly, “he was there before the accident too.” Silence exploded in Anaya’s mind. Before. Her chest tightened painfully. “That’s not true,” Arjun said sharply. But his voice— Wasn’t as steady as before. Riya smiled slightly. “Then tell her,” she challenged. “Tell her why you were on that road.” Tell her why you left. Tell her what you did. Anaya’s eyes moved back to Arjun. Searching. Demanding. Waiting. This time— He didn’t answer. And that silence— Was louder than anything else.
