The Secret Behind the Door

724 Words
Sleep didn’t come easily to Anaya that night. Every time she closed her eyes, Arjun’s voice echoed in her mind. “Curiosity has consequences.” It didn’t feel like a simple warning. It felt like something else. Something hidden. Something dangerous. She turned on the bed, staring at the ceiling. The room was too silent. Too unfamiliar. And Arjun… He hadn’t returned. A strange uneasiness settled in her chest. After a few minutes, she slowly sat up. Maybe some water would help. Or maybe she just needed a reason to step out of that suffocating room. The hallway was dimly lit. Cold. Empty. Anaya walked quietly, her footsteps soft against the marble floor. As she reached the end of the corridor, she noticed something. A faint light. Coming from a room that was slightly open. She paused. That room wasn’t open before. Her heart started beating a little faster. She knew she shouldn’t go closer. She remembered his words. But something inside her pushed her forward. Curiosity. Or instinct. She moved slowly toward the door. The gap was small, but enough to see inside. Arjun was there. Standing near the window, his back facing the door. He was on a call. “…I told you to handle it carefully,” his voice was low, controlled. Anaya held her breath. “I don’t want any mistakes this time.” A pause. Then the voice on the other end spoke faintly. She couldn’t hear clearly. But one word reached her ears. “Accident.” Anaya froze. Her fingers tightened against the wall. Accident? Her mind suddenly went blank. “…no one should connect it to me,” Arjun continued. His tone colder now. More serious. “This ends here.” Anaya’s heart started pounding. Louder. Faster. Her breathing became uneven. Her thoughts raced back to that night. Rain pouring heavily. A dark road. Her father’s car. The sudden crash. And the black car that disappeared without stopping. Her chest tightened painfully. No… It couldn’t be related. It was just a coincidence. It had to be. Before she could think further— Her foot slightly shifted. A small sound. But in the silence, it was loud enough. Arjun stopped speaking. The call ended. And suddenly— The room went completely still. Anaya’s breath caught. She stepped back quickly. Trying to act normal. Trying to calm her racing heart. But it was too late. The door opened. Arjun stood there. His eyes immediately locked onto her. Sharp. Dark. Unreadable. “How long have you been standing there?” he asked. His voice was calm. But dangerous. Anaya swallowed. “I… I was just walking,” she said, trying to sound normal. A weak lie. Even she knew it. Arjun took a step closer. His gaze didn’t leave her face. “Walking?” he repeated slowly. Her heartbeat grew louder. “Yes.” Silence. Heavy. Tense. Then suddenly— He stepped even closer. Too close. “Next time,” he said quietly, “knock before you listen.” Anaya’s stomach dropped. He knew. He had known from the beginning. But he didn’t shout. Didn’t get angry. That made it worse. Because his calm felt more threatening. “I wasn’t listening,” she said quickly. Another lie. Arjun looked at her for a few seconds. As if deciding something. Then he moved past her. Just like that. “Go back to your room,” he said. No anger. No explanation. Nothing. Anaya stood there, frozen. Confused. Shaken. Afraid. But more than that— Something else had started growing inside her. A question. A doubt she couldn’t ignore anymore. She slowly turned her head toward the room. The light was still on. The door slightly open again. Like it was calling her. But this time— She didn’t move. Because now she understood one thing clearly. This house was full of secrets. And Arjun Malhotra… Was hiding something far bigger than she imagined. Anaya took a slow breath. Trying to steady herself. Trying to think clearly. But her heart had already reached a conclusion. This marriage was not just a deal. It was connected to her past. And if that was true— Then she was not here by chance. She was here for a reason. A reason she hadn’t discovered yet. But she would. No matter what it cost her.
