Ted's grandparents were standing stiffly in the corner. Everyone one else was hugging and meeting each other. I nodded to Ted. I’d take the grandparents. Ted walked over to introduce Matt to Tate along with Kylie. I smiled and took a deep breath. I said, “Amelia and Andrew, so good to see you.” They smiled, “Lexi, I’m so glad you could come.” I nodded. Anne came over with a smile. She spoke to Amelia and Andrew, “Come meet the Millers.” Neither moved and Anne put some steel in her voice, “Now you two. You wanted this dinner. You came back for it, and you can’t sit in the corner all dang night long. Move your butts, meet these kind people, and for goddess sake; you’d better be nice.” Both grumbled as they walked away. Anne smiled at me and rolled her eyes once they left. I was itching to ask her about my family, but this wasn’t about me tonight. Amelia and Andrew were charming with Matt’s parents.
They had yet to make an effort to meet Matt though. Ted’s face was smiling, but I could see the anger in his eyes. I cleared my throat as Chase walked in the house. He smiled at me. I said, “Amelia, Andrew, this is the man you came to meet. This is Ted’s string, Beta Matt Miller.” Both evaluated him. Amelia stuck her hand out, “Pleasure to finally meet Ted’s string.” Matt nodded, “It’s nice to meet you too.” Amelia drew her hand back. Andrew said, “We’ve heard about you Matt. Anne speaks of you fondly.” Matt said, “I can’t say the same. I hadn't heard about you until last night.” I bit my lip. Claws were out. Amelia glanced at Ted, shocked, “You didn’t tell your string about your grandparents?” Ted said, “I did when mom told me about dinner.” Andrew's face turned red. Tate quickly grabbed his grandfather and led him into the dining room. Matt’s mom walked up to me, “I hear you met my husband already. Kind of. I’m Isabella, that’s my husband Isaac. You probably remember for your office fiasco, meddling men. I tell you. You’ll have to watch out for them.” She turned to Matt, “Now, Matthew. You BEHAVE!” Matt said, “They are acting like I don’t exist. Which is fine. They are upsetting Ted though, and I won’t have that mother. Not even under your roof.”
Isaac said, “As if you would expect any less from him Isabella. I know you’re secretly proud of him.” Isabella whapped him lightly on the arm, “You hush.” Everyone left to go into the dining room. I was heading that way when Chase pulled me back into the living room. He kissed me, “I missed you.” I laughed, “Maybe I missed you too.” He pulled away, smirking. I was confused until another woman bounded into the room. “Hi, I’m Jenna. I had to go pick up Molly and Jackson.” She pointed back towards the door. I was panicked until I realized Jackson wasn’t with her. I smiled, “Molly, good to see you again.” Isabella walked back into the room in, “Molly, where are my grandbabies?” Molly smiled, “Sleeping. Saied is at piano lessons. She said Jackson had to attend her lesson. He’s not going to make it. She was insistent. There was no arguing with her.” Isabella laughed, “She is her mother’s daughter. That’s too bad. They would’ve been fabulous ice breakers.” Molly frowned, “Ice breakers?” I said, “Amelia and Andrew the grandparents…. Thought Ted liking men was a phase.” Molly said, “Oh good. Is Haley popping in? Dear god say no.” I laughed, “I didn’t tell her about the dinner. Did you? “Molly said, “She knows it’s with Ted’s family. I think this will be a mum's the word kinda deal. She could decide to pop in on her own to put the grandparents in their place though.” I shrugged, “She’s never met Amelia and Andrew.” Molly snorted, “Maybe she should.” We all walked into the dining room. Chase was sitting next to me. We all made small talk for a while. Everything was going alright. Amelia asked me, “Lexi… are you dating that strapping young man next to you? He’s very handsome. You two are quite striking.” Anne cut in, “Lexi hasn’t met her string yet Amelia. Unless she’s hiding him like my Ted did at first. Then she will be in big trouble.” I laughed.
Andrew said, “Tate, when are you and Kylie going to give us grandchildren?” Ted was turning red. I quickly stood and said, “Ted, “Why don’t we go grab the wine?” I walked to him and grabbed his hand pulling him away. Tate said, “Not for a few more years. We aren’t ready yet.” Andrew said, “I’m not getting any younger. You all have been together since the day you both turned eighteen. What’s the hold up?” Kylie said, “I still do missions. We like our life the way it is.” Her voice faded. Ted stopped walking. I grabbed several bottles of wine and opened them. I turned back around to see Ted was wiping tears away from his eyes. He said, “They won’t even ask us; you just watch.” I said, “Then I’ll ask you.” Ted hugged me, “I love you, Lex.” I smiled, “And I love you.” I kissed his cheek, “Don’t let them get you down Ted.” Ted nodded. I knew they did get him down though. He wanted them to be proud of him. He’d even gone on a date with a girl they’d set him up with. It was a disaster. We walked back out and poured everyone some wine. When we sat down, I said, “So Ted… What about you and Matt? Thinking of… I believe Matt says pup.” Andrew snorted, “Lexi… you’re smart enough to know neither of them have the right parts to have a child.” Tate said, “Grandpa!” Matt growled silencing the table.
Ted looked right at me. “We plan to have our first one this summer. We are going with Matt and his co-parent first. We want our kids close in age, so we plan to do mine the following year. Maybe even Christmas time.” Amelia gasped, “That’s not normal! You…. that’s not how babies are made.” I said, “In today’s age that’s how many babies are made. Would you condone Tate and Kylie doing IVF if they needed to?” Andrew said, “Of course but…” Tate said, “But nothing. That’s great Ted! You’ll be such a good dad! Still planning on using your fairy for your turn? Or will you use a wolf too?” Ted laughed, “Of course I’m going with my fairy. A baby that can pop its own bottle? Sign Ted up.” Matt grabbed his hand and kissed his cheek. Anne squealed, “Did you hear that Tony? A grandbaby! By the end of next summer!” She got up and hugged Matt and Ted. She warned them both, “I will go crazy. You both need to know that. Tony! I need to start shopping!” Tony laughed, “Of course you do.” Amelia frowned, “It might not take.” Ted said, “I already spoke with Haley. She’s going to do her thing.” Matt said, “She is?” Ted nodded and cupped his face, “I wasn’t leaving our baby to chance when we have a healing fairy princess on our side.” Matt kissed him. Andrew choked on his water. Anne and Tony glared at him. Amelia had gone pale. Matt said, “I love you Ted.” Ted smiled, “Good. I love you too.”
Amelia sputtered, “The woman… who is she?” Ted smiled, “Oh she’s a strong she wolf...” Andrew said, “The fairy. The wolf won’t be our grandchild.” Ted stood, “YES the wolf WILL be your grandchild. Any part of Matt is my family.” Andrew said, “Not technically.” I stood, “Outside. Both of you.” Everyone turned to me. I wasn’t the leader of the hood, but my brother was. I still held a position of power among my people. No one moved, “Did I stutter, or did you lose use of legs? Amelia and Andrew GET. OUTSIDE. NOW!” I glared at both of them. Both put their heads down and walked outside. I put my napkin on the table. “Isabella, I apologize for my people’s attitude in your home. Rest assured, it will not happen when we return.” Everyone was gaping. Ted was surprised but proud. Chase was turned on. His eyes were full of lust looking into mine. I was pissed I couldn’t do anything about it at the moment. I stalked out of the room and slammed the front door shut. “WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING? Coming into the former Beta’s home and insulting his son! WHO JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE THE CURRENT BETA! You’ve Insulted your grandson, your family, and our goddess. That is Ted’s war goddesses destined string in there that you so callously dismissed. You spit at her with your comments. EXPLAIN YOURSELVES!” Amelia had tears coursing down her cheeks. I didn’t let them stop me, “You came home for this. YOU asked for this dinner. Why? Tell me, or so help me your business will be without you for six months.” Andrew’s eyes snapped up, “You can’t do that!” I said, “All three of us know that I can. Start. Talking.” Andrew said, “I’m not wrong. A child of his string and another woman wouldn’t be our grandchild.” I said, “You are very wrong, and if you’re not careful you will be cut out of Ted’s life. You’re lucky you aren’t already. I’d have told you to stick it where the sun doesn’t shine years ago.”
Amelia said, “It’s just hard for us. We thought this was a phase.” I said, “Don’t care.” Amelia said, “I thought he’d meet his war goddess mate, and then he’d be normal.” I said, “Why would you want Ted to be normal? He’s extraordinary. People trust him. They tell him things. He’s a great listener. He’s the FIRST Beta Male in the history of werewolves. Do you even see how proud of him you should be? He needs support. He will get enough problems from the werewolf community at large. The last people who should be roadblocks are his own family. That’s a conversation for another time. You are guests in this territory. Why did you ask for this meeting if you weren’t even going to be nice?” Andrew said, “We wanted to meet Ted’s string.” I said, “Lie better. You didn’t even introduce yourselves to him. You didn’t even seem like you wanted to meet him or them AT ALL.” They both looked nervous. I said, “What?” Amelia sighed, “We were asked to come….” I said, “Tony asked you to come home?” Both shook their heads. I was not getting a good feeling about this. “Answer my damn question.” Andrew said, “Not here.” I said, “Yes, here.” Andrew said, “Their hearing is too good.” I was stunned, “This is about the pack?” Andrew took out his phone and typed a message. He held it up so I could read it.
Andrew: We were threatened. They threatened to burn down our business and kill our son and grandchildren. They said if we helped them; they would spare Ted when they attacked. Despite what you think; we do love him. He’s our grandson. I’ll do whatever I have to for my family. We were to come home and visit Ted here often. Learn their patterns and report back.
Anger coursed through my veins. These were MY people MY pack. They were going to betray them? I called Heath on his Hood number, “Lexi.” I said, “You have two prisoners to come get. NOW!” Heath was surprised, “Alright. I’ll be there soon.” I hung up and turned to Amelia and Andrew, “What were you supposed to give them? Who is them?” Amelia cried, “We don’t know. They said they were rogues. They said they would kill Ted! We did what we had to do.” I said, “You could’ve come to me or the Hood. What were you supposed to give them? Did you give them anything?” Amelia shook her head. Andrew held up a message
Andrew: We were supposed to get their patrols. See if they had weak spots or people. We haven’t been here long enough to give them anything.
Heath came up in full Hood gear with Isaiah and two others. I said, “Explain to your leader what you have done. I’ll go explain it to your damn family. Get them out of my sight.” I told Heath. He nodded then asked, “I owe more than the apology I planned… Don’t I?” I nodded, “Yes you will.” Heath hugged me then left. I took a deep breath then walked inside. Anne smiled then frowned, “Where did they go?” I said, “The hood has them.” Tony stood, “What?” I said, “I first need to apologize to Isabella. I am sorry this happened in your home. Chase, their home needs to be swept for bugs.” Chase growled, “What?” Ted stood up, “They betrayed me?” I said, “It seems they were threatened. They claim it was by rogues. They said if they helped them get intel for an attack; Ted would not be harmed and allowed to return home. The Hood WILL get answers, and I cannot express how sorry we are. They are our only people in Nashville. None of ours should come here trying to gather information outside of those two.” Chase came towards me then glanced at Molly. He shot me a look. I knew he wanted to kiss me, but he didn’t. He just went outside. Matt said, “Ted...it’s ok.” Ted cried, “I hate them!” Matt led Ted out of the room. Tony had tears coursing down his cheeks. “Isaac… I... I am so sorry.” Isaac stood, “It’s not your fault. Everyone makes their own choices. I understand if you all would like to leave, but for our son's sakes; I think we should stay. Our goddesses meant for us to be family. I trust the moon goddess.” Tony shook Isaac’s hand, “As I trust our war goddess. You have my oath, my family here. My wife, myself, my son Tate, and our daughter Kylie; we will not betray you or your family Isaac Miller.” Ted had come back into the room and started crying harder.
Tate stood along with Anne. They both went and surrounded Ted. Anne wiped his tears, “None of this now Ted. Your daddy has fixed this as best we can. Let’s just get back to dinner. I hear the dessert is your favorite. Creme Brule.” Ted nodded, “Is it. Isabella, Isaac, I am so sorry.” Isabella stood, “Nonsense! You did nothing wrong Ted. Besides, all I heard that was relevant to our relationship moving forward tonight is I’ll have another grandchild to spoil at the end of the summer. I did hear that right? Didn’t I Matt?” Matt smiled and hugged Ted, “Yes, we talked with Joanie. She agrees that the beginning of June for an insemination would work for her. We have an alternate guard ready to go for Ted’s detail. I told her after the baby is born, she can return to her post; however, if she’d like to stay home, she’d have that option available. Chase and I decided today on where the house we build will be. It’s actually behind yours mom and dad.” Isabella fanned herself, “Well, that’s just... Isaac… another grandchild! I’m so excited!” Anne said, “Me too! I will spoil that little one rotten! I want you to know Matt… any child of yours is our grandchild. It’s how we all feel.” Tate agreed, “I’ll be their Uncle. Any member of Teddy’s family is my family too.” Chase came back with Derrick, Kevin and Kincade. They swept the house. No bugs were found thank god. Heath texted me.
Heath: We are sending people to scout. I doubt this is rogues. Rogues aren’t organized
Me: Great. We needed another problem.
Heath: There are always problems. Nothing will happen to Ted. I’ll make sure of it
I didn’t reply. What about Chase? Heath didn’t know he was my string, but I couldn’t let anything happen to these people or to Chase. I was going to have to set up some cameras to alert me if anything happened. I could grab my Black Arrow gear and be here to help. I looked at Chase. I couldn’t let anything happen to him. I just couldn't. He smiled at me, and that settled it. I’d set up cameras. I could do the border of his territory with that other Alpha who I was going to be helping on Halloween.
After we’d eaten dessert without Amelia and Andrew here; everything went smoothly. Both families got along really well. Molly left first wanting to get back to her kids. Jenna left because she gave her a ride over here. I stood, “I again apologize for Amelia and Andrew. Thank you for having me in your home.” Isabella smiled, “No apology from you is necessary. You are welcome in our home anytime Lexi.” I smiled, “Thank you.” I walked outside. I was grabbed from behind the second the door shut. I laughed because I could feel the sparks on my skin. Chase pushed me up against the house and kissed me. This kiss promised that he’d pleasure me later. He broke apart from me. I whimpered. He smiled, “That was so damn hot Lexi. I can’t get away yet, but when I do…” He bit my ear, “You better be ready.” I shivered and not from the cold. “Do you own any outfits that I won’t want to rip off you?” I laughed, “I don’t know. I’m going to run to my P.O Box, but I’ll meet you later.” Chase nodded, “Kincade and Kevin will go with you.” I smiled, “My car should be back soon, but if we are all going… I’ll race you guys back to my borrowed car.” I laughed and took off. I heard two growls and Chase’s laughter behind me. I made it to the car Chase had let me borrow well before Kevin and Kincade. Both came out from a tree with shorts on. They both put shirts on. “Slow pokes!” I said. Kincade said, “One of these days we will keep up with you.” I laughed, “Only if I’m drugged…. Or drunk. Even drunk… I’d beat you.” Kincade snorted and they both got into the car.
I laughed as I took off. I frowned when both Kincade and Kevin tensed. I sighed. What was with them and my P.O Box. I just needed to check it. I wasn’t expecting anything. I left them in the car and walked inside. I bumped into a guy, “Oh sorry...” The guy smiled, “My fault. I’ve never seen you around here.” I smiled, “Only been here for a few months.” The guy wasn’t ready to let me walk away. “I could show you around. I’m Alfred.” I smiled and stuck out my hand, “Lexi. I’m good, but thanks.” He smiled, “Should you change your mind; I hope I’ll see you around. Offer stand. I’ll always take time out of my schedule to show a beautiful woman around.” I blushed, “Thanks Alfred.” Alfred smiled, “See you around Lexi.” He left. I went over to my P.O. Box. I opened it. I was surprised to find a phone. Normally, Heath would’ve told me to expect something like this. I only checked on my box because sometimes our people would send me stuff. Obviously, I pick up my medications here too. I turned on the phone. Not surprised to see the message. I dialed and listened. My jaw dropped, “You think you can just get away from me? I’m your forever Lexi Scott! You think that wolf knows you? He doesn't know you! YOU ARE MINE! You said so that first time we were together! I’ll have you again! We will be together, and Heath WILL forgive me. Sally will pay! I was going to keep you both, but she was stupid! You both will be punished! You aren’t as safe as you think you are Lexi! I’ll always be around! You will ALWAYS be mine!” That was the end of the message.
I wanted to throw the phone away. I actually did for a brief second. I dug it back out of the trash can because Heath would need it. I pulled out my phone dialing Heath for the second time tonight. “Lexi, going for a record I see.” I sighed, “I had a phone in my P.O Box.” Heath said, “You shouldn’t have.” I said, “It’s from Noah. He left a ranting message about how I was his. He said you would forgive him, and he and I would be together. Heath, he said Sally would pay. He said we’d be punished for doing this to him.” Heath hissed, “He will not TOUCH either of you!” I looked outside to see Kevin and Kincade out of the car talking to the flirty Alfred. I sighed, “I just wanted you to know.” I walked outside and shots rang out. I was hit. I heard Heath scream my name as I held my phone up away from my face as I fell. It took a bullet and shattered. My arm was burning. I was thrown back when Chase’s car exploded in front of us. Throwing me, Kevin, Kincade, and Alfred further away from each.
I saw shimmers start. “MOTHER FUCKER!” More demons. They weren’t after the wolves I could lead them away. I needed Haley with my injury though. Thank god she was close by. With my phone dead that meant I’d have to run. Despite the throbbing in my shoulder I stood and took off. I could hear Kevin and Kincade yelling at me to wait, but I wouldn’t let them get hurt. They could take out the stragglers, and Haley could help me. I made a pattern they couldn’t catch onto, but I knew they were following me. I took a knife out of my boot and killed several as they were shimmering on my way across the territory. I was leaving a trail of dead demons and my own blood behind me. I made it past the border of Chase and Haley’s territory in a blur. I could hear growls as I ran past, but I didn’t pay any attention. I saw Haley sitting by a lake. I screamed her name, “HALEY!” She turned then popped to me in an instant. Another shot rang out. This time it burned. I coughed trying to breathe. I could tell Haley was screaming, but I couldn't make out her words. I saw a wolf jump over us as shreds of clothes disintegrated into the air. I saw Bjourn and Marcus fighting demons. I felt Haley and I pop somewhere. I looked around. The last coherent thought I had as I coughed up blood was, I was in the Hackura realm, and all I wanted was Chase.
