Chapter 5

The dressing room door creaked open, swinging wide to reveal Eva huddled in the corner, shaking like a scared rabbit. Trussed up like a turkey with duct tape over her mouth, she let out frantic, muffled screams the moment she saw Vincent. He crossed the room in three heartbeats, fingers flying to undo her bonds. Eva clawed at his shoulders, her voice raw and broken. "Vincent! She killed our baby!" Vincent's face went deathly pale. He whirled on me, eyes burning with rage. "Kate! Are you out of your goddamn mind?!" I barked a laugh. "The Bennett Family are all crazy. What did you expect?" Watching his horrified expression sent a thrill of dark pleasure through me. He charged only for my bodyguards to slam him face-first into the floor, his arms twisted behind his back. I crouched down, savoring the fear in his eyes. "How many times must I outplay you before you learn?" Oh, Vincent was dangerous in a fight. That's why I'd hired men who specialized in breaking dangerous things. Today, not even a goddamn dragon would dare breathe fire in my face. I snatched the dagger from the vanity and rammed it straight through his palm, pinning his hand to the table. Eva lunged with a shriek until my guard's boot sent her flying into the wall. She crumpled, howling like a kicked dog. Vincent choked back a scream, sweat pouring down his face, but his glare could've frozen hell over. "Mark my words," he hissed, "you'll pay for this." "The wedding..." Ugh. Not this again. My patience snapped. Snap. "I'd rather marry a cockroach than you!" I spat. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have an actual groom waiting." As I turned, his voice followed. "Running away won't change the truth!" The sheer delusion made me snort. "Fine. Since you're so obsessed with weddings, come watch mine." A nod to my guards. They hauled him up, slapping gauze on his hand like it was a used napkin before dragging him out. Outside, a fleet of luxury cars glittered under the morning sun. Then I saw him, Noah Wilson. Tall, devastating, his smile hitting me like a physical force. Time froze. The chaos faded. There was only him, looking at me like I was the only woman alive. "Holy s**t!" Eva's screech shattered the moment. "That's...that's the goddamn billionaire kingpin!" Eva let out a piercing, hysterical scream. "This is fake! It has to be! You barren nobody, but what makes you think you're good enough for him?" To everyone's shock, Vincent broke free and backhanded her so hard the sound cracked through the room. "You're beneath even speaking her name," he snarled, voice dripping with venom. Thud! The force sent her reeling, so she tripped over her own feet and crashed to the floor, clutching her reddening cheek. Tears streamed down her face, yet those hate-filled eyes burned only for me. Typical. He strikes her, but I get the blame. How pathetic! Vincent turned to me, his gaze intense enough to scorch. "This is all just an act to spite me, isn't it?" His voice cracked with barely restrained agony as he reached for me. Only for Noah to move like a shadow, cutting between us with a presence that screamed authority. One look from him could freeze blood. Vincent's jaw set like steel, swallowing the pain but not yielding an inch. "She belongs to me." Noah responded with a humorless, icy chuckle. "Today is our wedding. Funny. I don't recall sending you an invitation." His voice dropped to a dangerous purr. "Seems I've been away too long. Now every mangy mutt thinks it can growl at me." A single nod to his guards was all it took.
