As he slipped the wedding ring onto my finger, his gaze caught on the scar across my palm, his eyes shadowed with something heavy. Regret? Longing? I couldn't tell. He quickly masked his emotions with a heartfelt sigh. "Kate, I've finally made you mine. Bet you still don't remember me, do you?" I blinked at him, utterly confused. We'd grown up next door to each other since when had I forgotten him? With an affectionate chuckle, he flicked my nose. "Remember that time you got lost visiting grandma? Fell right into that abandoned pit and passed out from fright? I moved heaven and earth to drag you out of there. Carried your scrawny ass for miles before collapsing myself. Woke up to find you gone, nearly lost my mind searching. Thank god you'd wandered home. But you never even thanked me."
