"It’s not that I don’t believe what you saw, but it’s not like Amara to make a special packed lunch for me. It’s usually me who cooks for her whenever she wants to eat, so the situation you’re describing just seems odd," I retorted sarcastically.
Topan snorted with a disappointed sigh at my reaction, and I didn’t care. I kept myself busy, immersing myself in my work; I didn’t want to waste time on something uncertain.
I was doing all this just to boost my pay today. I had plans to buy a piece of meat to cook the steak Amara wanted. I had to earn at least 80 Dark to be able to buy that meat.
That woman had changed my life and my family’s, even resulting in a pregnancy; this made me so happy it felt as though my mother’s illness had vanished instantly. Yet what Topan had said had, to some extent, influenced my thoughts.
"Hey, Alex, snap out of it!"
I was startled; I stared at my colleague’s face for a long moment. He nodded, "All right, I’ll try going into that room."
Summoning a little courage, I walked towards the room. Along the way, I met colleagues who smiled at me and encouraged me to keep going and fight for my rights.
"You’ve got to stand up to that woman, Alex!"
"Don’t treat this as a trivial matter!"
Some colleagues spoke harshly, as if they were blaming Amara; I growled in protest. However, I let their words hang in the air.
My heart was racing erratically and my chest felt slightly tight. What was going on? It wasn’t like me to feel so unsettled. I stopped in my tracks just before reaching the door to that room. I could faintly hear a conversation taking place inside.
I was standing close enough to hear the conversation; even though I was two metres away, I could still clearly make out the voices inside.
“I’m seriously pregnant with your child, Mr Victor.”
A gentle hand grasped my wrist just as a cement block fell from the fifth floor. I stared in astonishment at the beautiful face with the piercing gaze that had, it turned out, saved my life. I gave a slight, awkward grin.
“How can a worker daydream during working hours? Do you want to die, huh?” His booming voice snapped me out of my reverie. “To everyone: never daydream during working hours. I don’t want to have to dark your pay for this negligence, understand!”
My throat suddenly tightened, making it hard for me to speak; I could only offer a nod to that beautiful, elegant woman. Her slender figure, with its firm posture, quickly walked away, leaving us workers behind. I glanced at Topan briefly before turning to the others one by one without asking.
“She’s the new supervisor here, Miss Lyra,” said Topan.
I nodded repeatedly as Topan explained the woman’s position; to reignite my work ethic and catch my breath, I could only let out a soft snort with a long sigh.
This afternoon felt interminably long, and the scorching heat seemed capable of burning off every calorie I’d stored since morning. The image of my mother lying in her bed flashed before my eyes once more. The money for her treatment should have been ready, but for the sake of my wife’s progress, I’d staked everything.
Forgive me, Mum. Only the deep sighs of my heart can be uttered within my heart; they cannot pass my lips. Whatever happens, it all began in my own heart; I was too selfish in clinging to a one-sided love, and now the wound runs deep.
“Come on, stop daydreaming—let’s get back to work!”
Anton was right; it’s better to just get on with the work so I don’t get caught and have my boss give me a dressing-down. However, just a few minutes into my work, Amara suddenly walked quickly towards me, accompanied by that man.
From a distance, I could already hear her calling out to me. I pretended not to hear; her attitude towards that man is still clear in my mind. And this pain I cannot suppress.
“Alex, don’t pretend you don’t know, okay.” Her voice sounded very close; I could even smell the scent of the perfume I’d bought. Her arm moved swiftly, turning my body to face her; her eyes were glaring, her lips moving slightly, “What have you been doing all this time? Don’t daydream if you want to stay alive.”
"What do you mean?" I asked stupidly.
