“Can I help you?” The voice sounded very familiar to me; I slowly lifted my head to see who it belonged to.
“Please check on my mother; I noticed her fingers were trembling,” I said to the female doctor, who looked startled as she turned towards me.
That beautiful face remained still; she looked even more beautiful in that state. I smiled to bring her back to her senses, and sure enough, the doctor immediately let out a long sigh without a smile.
“Doctor, how is my mother?” I asked, my eyes full of hope.
“Check the patient’s pulse!” She ordered the nurse who had been standing motionless by her side all this time. “How is it?”
“Stable, Doctor. She’ll come round any moment now,” replied the nurse, which made me breathe a sigh of relief.
The beautiful doctor looked at me with her sweet smile; although I remembered her name, I hadn’t dared to call her by it yet. She smiled gently and held out her hand.
I was transfixed, staring at those slender white fingers. Those fingers had once tended to me when I was injured; now she had transformed into a stunningly beautiful woman.
"How are you, Alex?"
Her voice was still so gentle it could drown out all my feelings; that story from the past was far from over, and I chose to leave simply to marry Amara, who had been looking after my mother in this town for three years.
I smiled and took her outstretched hand. “This is my life, Elara. Thank you for checking on my mother.”
She smiled again and withdrew her hand; it was clear her movements were slightly unsettled by my gaze. Yet, those eyes still held a longing for me. Or perhaps I was simply overconfident in that feeling—but no.
“All right, wait a little longer until your mother regains consciousness, then I’ll come back. Excuse me!”
I smiled, seeing her to the door. I watched her firm back—the one I’d once held so tightly—until she disappeared at the crossroads. Only then did I return to my mother’s ward, sit down beside her once more, and, of course, gaze upon that weary, aged face.
Slowly, my mother’s eyelids fluttered and opened. Her lips curved into a beautiful smile; I returned that smile with a sigh of relief.
“Alex.” My mother’s voice sounded so soft in my ears; I looked at her wistfully. “How is Amara? Isn’t she pregnant?” my mother continued.
There was a tightness in my chest that spread through my veins, causing my hands to clench beneath my mother’s blanket. It turned out my mother already knew about Amara’s pregnancy. I bowed my head deeply; as I raised it, I exhaled a long breath with a distinct snort.
“You must be patient with your pregnant wife, Alex. After all, that foetus is the fruit of your love.”
Those words felt like a lash across my back, making me start and widen my eyes as I looked at my mother. I shook my head, a sign that I rejected what she’d said.
"No, don’t do that, Alex. Amara has sacrificed so much for our family whilst you were far away and we had no news of you."
"But Mum, do you know the origins of that foetus?" I asked in a very low voice.
The woman nodded; I was speechless. My voice caught in my throat. So, was this the reason my mother’s health had deteriorated and she’d had to be rushed to this hospital?
“Don’t blame Amara; whatever has happened, she’s been a help to our family.”
I couldn’t say anything more; it was all my mother’s wish. So, a nod of the head was all I could offer at that moment, even though my heart was deeply wounded.
"All right, Alex will step out for a moment to see the doctor and let him know that Mum has regained consciousness," I said, then took her hand and kissed the back of it gently.
The woman I loved so dearly smiled and nodded in agreement. I smiled, then stood up to leave the ward.
With every step I took, memories of that construction site began to resurface. Amara’s conversation with that portly man echoed in my mind, and it was crystal clear that the pregnancy wasn’t mine. Yet, my mother’s words—that she still wanted a son-in-law—left me torn.
Before I realised it, I had reached the door of the doctor’s on-call room. It was quiet; the night was quite late. I could still hear movement inside, so I stood there in silence for a long time. Standing motionless, I gazed at the doctor’s beautiful silhouette. She turned around so that I could clearly see her face.
There were traces of weariness on that beautiful face. Finally, I plucked up the courage to knock on the door.
“Come in!”
Slowly I opened the door; the first thing I saw was Elara’s weary face. She looked at me without a word and I was speechless.
“Is this why you left me, Alex?”
