THE RESCUE
Before dawn, the Blackwood Pack never slept.
The eastern training grounds were already alive with the rhythmic clang of swords and the thunder of boots striking packed earth. Delta warriors pushed through exhausting drills under the sharp gaze of their captain, Theo Carter, while Beta Kelvin reviewed the night patrol reports.
Not far away, Gamma Andrew Brooks strode quickly toward the Pack House, his usually calm expression replaced by grim determination.
He had returned.
The massive oak doors opened before him.
Inside, the council hall was already occupied.
At the head of the long table sat Marcus Blackwood, Alpha of the Blackwood Pack.
Even seated, his presence dominated the room.
The morning sunlight spilling through the tall windows outlined his broad shoulders and powerful build. His dark hair was slightly tousled from another sleepless night, and his brown eyes carried the quiet exhaustion of a man who hadn't truly rested in years.
To his right sat Alpha Damian Blackwood, Marcus's father.
Beside him were Luna Evelyn Blackwood, Alpha Theodore Blackwood, and Luna Eleanor Blackwood.
Kai Blackwood leaned against one of the stone pillars with his arms folded, while Zach Blackwood stood nearby, wearing his usual polite smile.
The moment Andrew entered, every conversation stopped.
Marcus looked up.
“What did you find?”
Andrew placed a folder filled with sketches and notes onto the table.
“It isn't just a prison.”
Marcus's expression hardened.
“It's a laboratory.”
Silence settled over the room.
Andrew continued.
“There are more than fifty werewolves being held beneath the eastern ridge. Men, women... and children.”
Luna Evelyn covered her mouth.
Grandmother Eleanor's face paled.
Andrew's voice remained steady, though anger flickered in his eyes.
“The hunters are experimenting on them. Training them. Selling some to buyers.”
A low growl rumbled through Marcus's chest.
“So the rumors were true.”
Andrew nodded once.
“I saw everything myself.”
He hesitated before adding,
“There is one prisoner in particular.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
“He fought three armed hunters without shifting.”
Theo let out a low whistle.
“Impossible.”
“I thought the same.”
Andrew met Marcus's gaze.
“He protected another prisoner instead of escaping.”
That caught Marcus's attention.
“A warrior?”
“No.”
Andrew shook his head.
“Just... different.”
Marcus stood.
The wooden chair scraped across the stone floor.
“No Blackwood wolf will remain in chains while we still draw breath.”
His golden eyes swept across the room.
“Prepare the warriors.”
Theo immediately straightened.
“Yes, Alpha.”
“Kelvin.”
“I'm already organizing the squads.”
“Andrew.”
“I'll guide us to the entrance.”
Marcus looked toward Kai.
“You'll stay close to Mother and Father until we return.”
Kai frowned.
“I can fight.”
“I know.”
“Then let me come.”
Marcus's voice left no room for argument.
“I gave an order.”
Kai looked away but said nothing.
From across the hall, Zach watched the exchange with unreadable eyes.
Then, ever so slightly...
He smiled.
Outside, the pack moved with practiced precision.
Warriors buckled armor.
Swords were sharpened.
Bows were strung.
Within minutes, dozens of elite wolves stood ready in the courtyard.
Marcus stepped onto the stone platform overlooking them.
No grand speech.
No dramatic promises.
Only one sentence.
“We bring them home.”
A deafening chorus of growls answered him.
One by one...
Blackwood warriors shifted.
Massive wolves filled the courtyard.
Black.
Gray.
Brown.
White.
At their head stood the largest of them all.
Marcus's jet-black wolf.
His golden eyes burned beneath the pale morning sky as he lifted his head and released a thunderous howl.
The entire forest answered.
And together...
The Blackwood Pack disappeared into the trees.
---
The journey to the eastern ridge took nearly two hours.
The deeper the Blackwood warriors ventured into the forest, the quieter everything became.
No birds sang.
No insects buzzed.
Even the wind seemed afraid to pass through the towering trees.
Marcus's wolf ran at the front of the formation, his enormous black body weaving effortlessly between ancient oaks.
Behind him came Kelvin's dark gray wolf, Theo's broad chestnut wolf, Andrew's ash-gray wolf, and dozens of elite warriors.
Andrew suddenly slowed.
He shifted back into his human form behind a cluster of boulders.
“We're here.”
The others shifted as well.
Hidden beneath thick vines and moss was a reinforced steel door built into the mountainside.
To an ordinary human, it would have looked like part of the cliff.
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“So this is where they've been hiding.”
Andrew nodded.
“I counted over thirty armed guards outside yesterday. There are more inside.”
Theo rested his hand on the hilt of his sword.
“Give the order.”
Marcus surveyed the entrance one final time.
“No prisoner is to be harmed.”
His golden eyes swept across every warrior.
“The hunters are our enemies.”
“Not the wolves they've broken.”
Every warrior nodded.
Marcus raised one hand.
Three fingers.
Two.
One.
Theo charged first.
With a roar, he slammed into the steel door.
The reinforced hinges exploded inward.
Alarms immediately echoed through the underground tunnels.
Red lights flashed.
“INTRUDERS!”
“HOLD THEM OFF!”
Human guards rushed toward the entrance with weapons raised.
Marcus shifted mid-stride.
His massive black wolf burst through the smoke like a living nightmare.
The first hunter didn't even have time to react before Marcus's claws sent him crashing into a concrete wall.
Kelvin fought beside him with calculated precision, knocking weapons from hunters' hands before they could fire.
Theo carved a path through the corridor, protecting the younger warriors behind him.
Andrew slipped through the chaos, searching for the prisoners.
Explosions shook the underground facility.
Smoke filled the halls.
Panic spread among the hunters.
Meanwhile...
Deep inside the laboratory...
Adrian froze.
The alarm wasn't part of the usual routine.
The guards were shouting.
Gunfire echoed somewhere above.
Isaac clutched the bars of his cage.
“Adrian...”
Adrian stood.
Something was different.
Very different.
The ground trembled.
Heavy footsteps thundered overhead.
Then...
A deafening howl echoed through the laboratory.
It wasn't human.
It wasn't anything the hunters could control.
Several prisoners gasped.
“Wolves...”
One elderly captive began crying.
“They came...”
Another whispered,
“The packs found us...”
For the first time in years...
Hope entered the laboratory.
The guards, however, were terrified.
“Move the experiments!”
“Protect Subject Twenty-Seven!”
“Don't let them escape!”
Two armed hunters ran toward Adrian's cage.
One unlocked the door while the other aimed a tranquilizer gun at him.
“Come with us.”
Adrian didn't move.
“I said move!”
The hunter reached for his arm.
Before he could grab him—
Adrian twisted his wrist, disarmed him, and sent the tranquilizer dart into the second guard's shoulder.
The man collapsed instantly.
Adrian caught the first guard's baton and struck him once across the ribs.
The hunter crumpled to the floor.
Isaac stared with wide eyes.
“You... did it.”
Adrian quickly grabbed the keys from the unconscious guard.
One by one...
He unlocked every cage within reach.
“Everyone who can walk,” he called, “help the children first.”
No one argued.
Some prisoners were too weak to stand.
Others carried injured wolves on their backs.
Adrian lifted a woman who had collapsed near the doorway and helped her toward the corridor.
He could have escaped first.
Instead...
He stayed behind until the last child had left the room.
The laboratory shook again.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Far above them, the battle continued.
Closer.
Closer.
The Blackwood Pack was breaking through.
Adrian looked toward the corridor leading deeper into the facility.
For reasons he couldn't explain...
His heart suddenly began to race.
As if...
Someone powerful had just arrived.
---
The pounding in Adrian's chest grew stronger with every passing second.
He couldn't explain it.
Something...
Someone...
Powerful was inside the laboratory.
The feeling wasn't fear.
It was strangely familiar.
Another explosion shook the corridor.
Chunks of concrete crashed from the ceiling as terrified hunters sprinted past the prisoners.
“They're inside!”
“Fall back!”
“Protect the research data!”
Adrian ignored the shouting.
“There are still people trapped,” he said firmly, turning back toward the cells farther down the hallway.
One of the older prisoners grabbed his wrist.
“Forget them! We have to run!”
Adrian gently pulled free.
“I won't leave anyone behind.”
Without another word, he disappeared into the smoke.
Isaac hesitated only a second before following him.
“Adrian, wait!”
Together they reached another locked section of the laboratory.
Behind reinforced bars, nearly a dozen prisoners cried for help.
“They sealed us in!”
“The doors won't open!”
Adrian searched the unconscious guard he'd defeated earlier until he found another keycard.
His first attempt failed.
“So did mine!” one of the prisoners shouted.
“They changed the security system yesterday!”
Adrian looked around desperately.
Then his eyes landed on an emergency control panel.
He slammed the stolen baton into it.
Sparks exploded.
The heavy doors groaned before sliding open.
The prisoners rushed out, many barely able to walk.
A young mother stumbled while carrying her daughter.
Before she could fall, Adrian caught the child in his arms.
“We're almost out,” he assured her gently.
Behind them...
The laboratory shook more violently than before.
Warning sirens blared.
“Structural failure detected.”
“Evacuate immediately.”
Smoke poured through the corridors.
Somewhere above, the battle still raged.
Far ahead, a deafening roar echoed through the tunnels.
Even Adrian froze.
Whatever had made that sound...
It wasn't human.
Isaac clutched Adrian's sleeve.
“What was that?”
Adrian slowly shook his head.
“I don't know...”
None of them realized they had just heard the roar of the Beast Alpha.
---
Outside the laboratory, Marcus tore through the remaining hunters with terrifying efficiency.
His enormous black wolf stood surrounded by fallen enemies.
Golden eyes burned with controlled fury.
No hunter dared stand before him for long.
Kelvin stepped beside him.
“The prisoners are being evacuated.”
Marcus nodded.
“Any casualties?”
“Several injured. None of ours so far.”
Andrew suddenly emerged from another corridor.
“Alpha!”
Marcus turned.
“There are still captives inside the eastern wing.”
Marcus didn't hesitate.
“We're going.”
As they raced through the collapsing corridors, Andrew caught sight of a familiar figure.
The silver-haired prisoner.
Instead of running for safety...
He was carrying an injured child toward the exit.
Andrew stopped for a brief moment.
“He's saving everyone else first.”
Even Marcus glanced in that direction.
He saw only a young man covered in blood and dust, refusing to abandon strangers.
For a brief second, their eyes nearly met.
Marcus felt something strange.
A pull.
A sensation he couldn't explain.
Then—
The ceiling collapsed between them with a thunderous crash.
“Alpha!” Theo shouted.
“The tunnel's giving way!”
Marcus growled.
“Get the prisoners out!”
The mission came first.
He turned and charged deeper into the collapsing facility to rescue those still trapped.
Neither Marcus nor Adrian realized how close they had just come to each other.
---
At the main entrance, fresh air finally greeted the escaping prisoners.
Many collapsed onto the forest floor, sobbing with relief.
Some looked up at the sky as if seeing it for the first time.
Isaac smiled through tears.
“We made it...”
Adrian smiled back.
“We're free.”
Then his legs gave out.
Years of captivity, exhaustion, injuries, and constant fear finally caught up with him.
He fell forward.
Isaac barely managed to catch his hand.
“Adrian!”
Several Blackwood healers rushed over immediately.
“He's alive.”
“Pulse is weak.”
“Take him back to the pack!”
Isaac refused to let go.
“I'm staying with him.”
One healer smiled kindly.
“You can come too.”
As stretchers carried the injured toward waiting vehicles, Marcus emerged from the destroyed laboratory.
The facility burned behind him.
The hunters' operation was over.
Andrew approached quietly.
“All prisoners accounted for.”
Marcus nodded once.
“Good.”
His gaze moved across the rescued wolves.
Then it stopped briefly on the silver-haired young man lying unconscious on a stretcher.
Something about him felt...
Different.
Marcus couldn't explain why.
He stared for another moment before Kelvin called his name.
“Alpha, we need you.”
Marcus finally looked away.
“I'll be there.”
The convoy began its journey back to the Blackwood Pack.
Neither Marcus nor Adrian knew what the future held.
Neither knew why their paths had crossed.
And neither knew that the mysterious silver-haired prisoner carried secrets powerful enough to change the entire werewolf world.
For now...
Adrian was simply a rescued survivor.
But that would not last forever.
