A night to remember

The evening air carried a crisp, cool breeze, gently rustling the curtains of their small apartment. Inside, Emma was a whirlwind of energy, moving with practiced precision as she applied the final touches to Lily’s makeup. “Almost done,” Emma muttered, biting her lower lip in concentration as she blended out the last bit of highlighter on Lily’s cheekbones. “And… there! You look absolutely stunning.” Lily blinked up at her reflection, momentarily taken aback. She barely recognized the woman staring back at her. The sapphire gown draped over her frame like it had been made just for her, hugging her waist before flowing effortlessly to the ground. The deep color made her skin glow, and the slit up the side revealed just the right amount of leg without being too much. Her makeup was subtle yet mesmerizing warm-toned eyeshadow accentuated her almond-shaped eyes, her lashes curled sky-high, and her lips were painted a soft but sultry rose shade. Her naturally wavy hair cascaded down in soft, effortless waves, framing her face in a way that made her look ethereal. Emma, in her champagne-colored gown, looked just as breathtaking. Her dress had a subtle shimmer under the dim apartment lighting, clinging to her curves in all the right places. Her caramel-toned makeup complemented her features perfectly, making her brown eyes pop. Lily turned to her best friend and exhaled. “Emma… we look like we belong in a Vogue editorial.” Emma grinned. “That’s because we do.” A sharp knock at the door made them both jump. “Car’s here,” Emma said, grabbing her small clutch. “Let’s go before we overthink this.” Lily nodded, taking one last glance at herself in the mirror before following Emma out. As they stepped out onto the sidewalk, a wave of murmurs spread through their small apartment complex. “Is that Lily Chen?” one of the neighbors whispered to another. “They look like celebrities,” someone else muttered. “I heard they’re going to some exclusive dinner. Maybe they’re dating rich men now,” a woman scoffed. Emma smirked, linking her arm with Lily’s as they walked toward the sleek black car waiting for them. “Let them talk,” she murmured. Lily, despite the stares and hushed gossip, kept her head high. It was the first time in a long while she felt worthy of standing tall. The chauffeur, an older gentleman in a crisp black suit, stepped forward and opened the door for them. “Miss Chen, Miss Carter, please step in.” They slid into the luxurious vehicle, sinking into the plush leather seats. The car purred softly as it pulled away, the city lights twinkling through the tinted windows. The venue was beyond anything they had expected. The Grand Lancaster Ballroom was a masterpiece of modern luxury floor-to-ceiling glass windows revealed a breathtaking view of the New York skyline, while a grand crystal chandelier hung elegantly above the main floor, casting shimmering patterns across the room. The entrance was lined with photographers and reporters, capturing the arrival of guests dressed in the finest couture. As their car came to a smooth stop at the front, the driver stepped out first, opening the door. Lily and Emma exchanged a quick glance before stepping out. Instantly, a hush fell over the small crowd gathered outside. The moment Lily’s silver heels touched the pavement, all eyes were on them. She stepped out with an effortless grace, the deep blue silk of her gown flowing like liquid with every movement. The cool breeze sent strands of her hair fluttering, making her look even more ethereal under the golden glow of the entrance lights. Emma followed, just as captivating in her champagne gown, holding her head high. The reaction was instantaneous. Gasps, hushed whispers, envious glances. Even among the most elite in the industry, they stood out. A little farther ahead, Camille and Marco stood among a group of models and agents. Camille’s face contorted with thinly veiled disdain, while Marco’s brows shot up in mild surprise. Lily’s gaze flickered to them for the briefest moment before she turned her head away, completely dismissing their existence. Emma followed suit, linking her arm with Lily’s and walking forward without hesitation. The true power move? Ignoring them entirely. Two imposing security guards in sleek black suits stepped forward the moment they entered the main hall. “Miss Chen, Miss Carter,” one of them greeted in a low, professional tone. “This way, please.” Without another word, they were led past the grand entrance, bypassing the main floor entirely. They were taken through a series of quiet hallways before stopping in front of a set of towering double doors. One of the guards pressed an earpiece before nodding to the other. “You may enter.” The doors swung open to reveal an intimate, opulent private lounge. The space was filled with plush velvet seating, golden accent lighting, and a bar stocked with only the rarest of liquors. But what caught Lily’s attention wasn’t the luxury it was the people. Only a handful of individuals were in the room, each one exuding wealth and influence. Top industry executives, elite designers, and a select few of the world’s most renowned models. A waiter approached them instantly. “Miss Chen, Miss Carter, can I offer you a drink?” Lily shook her head politely. Lily and Emma settled into the plush velvet seats, their eyes scanning the opulent private lounge. The atmosphere was thick with power and exclusivity only the most influential figures in the industry occupied this space. Emma leaned in slightly, whispering, “Lily, do you realize where we are right now?” Lily nodded, still taking it all in. She wasn’t just in the same room as the elite she was among them. Before she could fully process the weight of it all, the doors at the far end of the lounge swung open. A tall figure stepped inside, his presence commanding instant attention. Christian Lancaster. The air seemed to shift as he moved through the room, exuding effortless power and charisma. He was dressed sharply in a perfectly tailored black suit, the crisp white shirt beneath slightly unbuttoned, revealing a hint of his sculpted chest. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his piercing blue eyes scanned the room before locking onto Lily. For a split second, she felt her breath hitch. He strode toward them, his every movement exuding control, like a king surveying his kingdom. The conversations around them quieted as people acknowledged his presence. Christian reached their table, offering a slight nod of greeting. “Lily Chen. Emma Carter.” His voice was smooth, confident. Emma, ever the bold one, arched a brow. “Mr. Lancaster. A pleasure.” Christian’s lips quirked slightly in amusement before his gaze settled fully on Lily. “I trust you’re enjoying the evening?” Lily swallowed, keeping her expression composed. “It’s... surreal.” His blue eyes studied her carefully before he leaned back in his seat. “Good. It’s important to get used to being in rooms like this. Because if you accept my offer, this will be your new reality.” Lily and Emma exchanged a glance. Christian continued, his voice measured, purposeful. “I’m not one for small talk, so I’ll get straight to the point. I want both of you to come work for me. Emma, as a lead makeup artist under Lancaster Entertainment’s exclusive contracts. Lily” He paused, his gaze unwavering. “I want you as one of my agency’s top models.” Emma blinked, stunned. “Wait... what?” Lily’s heart pounded. “You want me?” Christian smirked, clearly expecting the disbelief. “I don’t offer opportunities like this lightly, Miss Chen. I’ve seen your potential.” Lily’s mind spun. This was the opportunity. The kind of deal models dreamed of. Yet, it felt... unexpected. Almost too perfect. Before she could respond, Christian glanced at his watch and exhaled. “Why don’t we continue this conversation later? I’d like to speak with Lily privately.” Emma looked between them, then at Lily, giving a slight nod before getting up. “I’ll just be at the bar. Don’t take too long.” Once Emma was out of earshot, Christian stood and extended a hand. “Come with me.” Lily hesitated but eventually slipped her hand into his. His grip was warm, firm. He led her past the other guests, out through a quiet corridor, and into a dimly lit side lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the glittering city skyline. He finally turned to face her, his expression unreadable. “I know you have questions.” Lily folded her arms. “More than a few.” Christian exhaled slowly, studying her before reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a sleek black envelope and extended it toward her. Lily frowned. “What is this?” “Something I need you to read when you get home.” She hesitated before taking the envelope, its weight heavier than it should be. Christian watched her carefully. “This offer it’s real. But it comes with choices. I suggest you think carefully before deciding.” Lily felt the shift in his tone, the unspoken weight behind his words. She tightened her grip on the envelope. “And if I choose to say no?” Christian’s gaze darkened slightly, though amusement flickered at the corner of his lips. “Then I suppose I’ll just have to be very persuasive.” Her breath caught. There was something about the way he said it low, smooth, almost a challenge. Lily straightened, refusing to let him rattle her. “I’ll read it.” Christian nodded, satisfied. “Good.” Then, without another word, he turned and walked away, leaving Lily standing alone, the envelope burning in her hands.
