Rapid-fire templates for real-world application.
Theory is the foundation, but execution is the building. This final chapter provides you with "Quick-Strike" templates you can use when you are in the heat of a crisis and don't have time to re-read the whole book.
The 60-Second Reset
When you feel the "Freeze" response (Chapter 1) taking over, go through this checklist immediately:
Breathe: Take three deep breaths to lower your cortisol.
Define: Write the problem in exactly one sentence. If you can't, you're in "The Fog."
The Smallest Stone: What is the one thing I can do in the next 60 seconds to move 1% forward?
The "Problem-to-System" Converter
Use this template after you’ve solved a problem to ensure it stays solved (Building the Shield, Chapter 9):
The Event: (e.g., The website crashed during the sale.)
The Root Cause: (e.g., The server wasn't scaled for high traffic.)
The Manual Fix: (e.g., Rebooted server and cleared cache.)
The Permanent Shield: (e.g., Set up "Auto-Scaling" with our hosting provider so it happens automatically next time.)
The Decision Matrix (The 70% Rule)
When you are struggling to choose between two solutions (Chapter 5), fill this out:
Factor Solution A Solution B
Speed (1-10) How fast can we start? How fast can we start?
Reversibility Is this a One-Way or Two-Way door? Is this a One-Way or Two-Way door?
Resource Cost What do we have to give up? What do we have to give up?
Simplicity Does it pass Occam's Razor? Does it pass Occam's Razor?
The "Day One" Pivot Script
If you are struggling to tell a team or yourself that it's time to pivot (Chapter 8), use this script to remove the ego:
"Based on the data we had on Day One, our plan was the right choice. However, we now have new data regarding [Factor X]. If we were starting today with this new information, we would choose [New Path]. Therefore, we are pivoting to maximize our resources."
The Final Toolkit Exercise:
Print this chapter out or save it as a PDF on your phone's home screen. The next time you feel overwhelmed, don't try to remember the book—just open the Field Manual and follow the steps.
