33 - Abby POV

1385 Words
Do you ever get that feeling where something seems off? That was the feeling I was having right now. We had been driving for only a few minutes. So why was I feeling off? Answer - Jason and Nicole either side of me; their behaviour changed. We were normally messing around a bit on our motorbikes. But then it all just... stopped. They put both hands on the bars and held it tight. I looked between the two of them, wondering if either of them would do or say anything, but their heads remained focused on the road ahead. Time for some answers. I point out the obvious over the radio comms we had in our helmets; it also connected us to the three at the back as well, plus the guys in the vans. "Is there a problem that you are all shielding me from?" They both finally turn their heads towards me. Ah, you remembered I was here. Good! I assumed they had been mindlinking because it took them a while to respond back. "We got trouble in the woods." Jason responded. "Anything we can do to help?" "No, our focus is the motorcade and keeping us moving. The warriors should handle it." Colt's voice soon crackles over the radio. "Abby, I would prefer it if you got in the van with us and ditched your bike." "If there is trouble in the woods, then stopping will make us sitting ducks for any that get through." I replied back. "It's a half-hour trip, and we will be driving through Mansfield for a large chunk of that, so we will be fine once we make the town." I could see his argument, though. I was very exposed out here, but I was right, too. This would just have to be one of those choices we had to live with. Before Colt could protest, Clarke's voice cut through. "Heads up, people. We got bikes to the rear." "How many?" "Looks to be about four of them." "Hunters?" "Would be my guess." I know the guys were getting more tense as they knew that trouble had arrived, but it was only four bikers that couldn't be too hard, right? Just as finish that thought, five more bikers appear in front of us, having pulled out from side roads. I shouldn't have thought about it. "The bikes behind are approaching." "We got a few in front now, too." "Everyone, prepare yourself. I doubt this is all of them. And, get your weapons ready." Since we knew that we would be on bikes and in vans, we were giving some gear to help protect ourselves if needs be. Me, I was given an extendable baton, which I had in my right hand as the bikes drew near; it was actually Naomi's from her police gear. They did offer more lethal weapons, but I declined, I don't want to cause any bloodshed. I may not have a choice in that matter, though. The bikes slowed down, so they started to get closer towards us. Jason and Nicole started to press tighter against my sides so that I was more shielded. "Maeve, Adelaide, try and give us cover if you can. Rest of you, get ready." Colt ordered over the radio. There was a slight air of hesitation in his voice; probably because I was out here whilst he was driving a van. The five bikes at the front ended up forming an arrowhead around us, so that there was two riders either side of Jason and Nicole, then one slap bang in front of me. Engines were being revved as the suspense built. "We are surrounded." Gita announces over the comms. "So are we." Nicole answers back. "The second they move, launch. Abby, I want you out of there the second there is an opening." I kept my focus on the bike ahead, more specifically, the biker - there was something about this view in front of me that seemed familiar. I didn't have long to contemplate where, though. Before I could react, a purple sphere enveloped us as bullets started pounding against it. We look back and give Adelaide a salute as thanks. I do take note that Maeve is no longer in the cockpit. Wonder where she has gone. "MOVE NOW!" You didn't need to tell us twice. Jason and Nicole immediately punch and kick at the closest bikes, making them skid off into the side before grappling with the remaining two. I popped into a wheelie, trying to knock the back of the bike in front but they manage to dodge. "We got cars coming up the rea- MAEVE! Be careful on the roof of that van!" Looks like most of the fighting was in the back. No time to think about that - person in front to contend with. I extend the baton long and pull up alongside the assailant, managing to get a clean shot to their side. I go for a second, but they swerve wide. We eye each other from the either side of the road. I take in the bike - it was a replica of mine. There was writing on the side but I couldn't what it read as it was blocked by their body as they leant forward and... swerved sharply back towards me! Tyres screech as my brakes grind me to an almost halt. The Hunter flies straight across my front by a few inches. Using this opportunity, I rev my engine and accelerate down the road as quick as my bike could go. "Abby, they are still on your tail." Adelaide warns me. I glance over my shoulder to confirm it; the rest of the motorcade a small light in the distance. "Guess I bet to shake them off." I don't think I had ever pushed my bike as fast as I was going right now. The trees whizzed by in a blur as the roar of the engine came alive beneath me. Pop. Pop. Pop. Noises came close by me, causing me to duck. Why didn't this guy use his gun earlier when I was closer? I check my mirrors and could see they were about fifteen metres away from me. If our bikes were the same, then there was no way I could enlarge this gap. Unless... I look back, they were on my left-hand side with the gun pointed at me. Why aren't they shooting? No time to question, only quick thinking. I put my foot on the pedal to brake, just enough to bring them in line with me. The gun was in their right hand, so I was going to use that to my advantage. They drew level with me, our knees almost touching. I duck my head to avoid being in the line of sight of the gun and reach for their right handlebar, where the front brake sat. Giving the lever a squeeze, the bike tips over, the rear wheel coming up and over, sending the bike and rider skidding across the road. I managed to retract my bike out of the way before we could get caught in the crash. Watching the two come to a rest, I drive over to the bike. My plan - take the keys and make sure the gun was out of reach so that they wouldn't be able to come after us. Rolling to a stop by their bike, I freeze. The writing on their bike - Guardian. There was only one person I knew who had that etched onto their bike, and I really wish it wasn't them. "I thought it was you, Angel." I hear an all too familiar voice behind me, calling me by the nickname I had engraved on my bike - Angel. Slowly turning, I come face to face with the Hunter. "I'll take off my helmet, if you take off yours." The way he stood, his build, his voice. It was all becoming too much for me as I watched in horror as they removed their helmet. The blue eyes I had inherited staring right back at me. "Hello, Abby." My dad's voice freezes me over as a cold shiver tingles down my spine. "I think it is time for us to have a little chat."
