"Maeve, do not get on the roof!" I'm getting on the roof.
My sister could protest all she wanted, but, as of right now, there were people at the back of the motorcade, including one baby and two toddlers, who were very vulnerable. Hence why I voiced my intentions the moment the bikes started coming into view.
"Maeve! Do not get on the roof!" I'm totally getting on the roof of the van. I was doing this for her sake as well, for it was her mate, my brother-in-law who was at the rear.
"We could use some cover for the rear." Colt defends my actions as I unbuckle my seatbelt and wind down the window. At least someone was on the same page as me.
"She will be totally exposed up there and have nothing to hold onto." Adelaide protests, but she turns her attention for a moment - the moment I needed as I quickly hoist myself out of the cockpit.
"Maeve..!" I can hear her whine behind me as I stand on top of the van and start making my way across to the back of my van. Austin and the twins stare at me with wide eyes as I leap to their van.
"You didn't want to use magic to poof yourself across!?" Austin leans out the window to ask.
"Where is the fun in that?" Before he could respond, the sound of gunfire can be heard ahead of us. Gotta move!
I sprint across and jump to the final van, praying that I wasn't too late.
By the time I reach the back, the others are already grappling with a few of the bikes. Not too far away, I can see a few cars rapidly approach in the distance.
"We got cars coming up the rea- MAEVE! Be careful on the roof of that van!" Clarke lectures me as he pulls the gun out of the Hunter's hand before turning it on him, sending them sprawling to the floor.
The one motorbike that was not in a skirmish takes aim at the back of Clarke's head.
"NO!" I cry as I magic a blue energy shield around the three of them. The bullet harmless ricochet off.
All the Hunter's attention turns up to look at me as I hold the shield strong - their guns following their gaze as they take aim. Oh boy!
I hit the deck as bullets started flying over me, using one hand to cover my head whilst the other held out to maintain the shield around our guys.
"Can't you use your magic on them?" Clarke shouts up. I could see him and the others trying to take out our attackers whilst staying within my shield.
"Can't use offensive attacks against them. It will trigger the thing." This was how we were referring to it now when we were bound by the spell.
That didn't mean I was completely useless, though. It just meant I had to think outside of the box.
I rummage in my pocket for something I knew would help - box of thumbtacks. Bingo!
"You may want to watch your paths." Clarke, Gita and Felix look up to see me pouring the contents of the box over the end of the van. They zip and swerve out of the way, reacting a lot quicker than the Hunters did. Some took the hit straight on, others smashed into their comrades as they tried to dodge the debris.
Our own van slightly swerves, causing me to cling on for dear life as I grab onto the end. Weird.
"Just got the cars left." Clarke informs the group at the back. They were still firing shots at us so I had to keep my shield up to protect our riders.
I could hear the odd tyre screech which meant a few of them got hit, thanks to me. I give myself a little pat on the back for managing to cause some damage.
I peek up over the edge of the roof - big mistake.
"AHHHH!" My screams echo through the night as I feel a bullet rip through my chest.
"MAEVE!" Clarke cries out as I slump back down to the roof of the van, lying face down on the surface. My injury causing the shield to falter and fade away.
A hand rests on top of my shoulder as I am turned over. "I've got you, Maeve." The source of our van swerving is soon explained as Dan, who was driving, comes into view. Guess Siobhan, or Jesus as the humans say, has taken the wheel.
Dan quickly scans my wound over before taking shots at the cars behind. I'm guessing he must have hit someone as I can hear screeching behind me.
"Let's get you out of here." He hauls me up and carries me, bridal style, to the front of the van.
"My... hero.." I meek out, I could already feel my energy waining.
"Not done yet. You just hang on." He gives me a smile before his eyes cloud over.
A few moments later, a familiar purple light flashed above me. "Maeve!" Adelaide comes into view, panic etched all over her face.
"Tis... but a scratch..." I cheekily smile up at the two as Dan applies pressure to the wound.
"Only you could make a joke whilst bleeding out, sis." She smiles down at me, trying to hide her worry.
"It's not a through and through. Don't think it has hit anything major, but trajectory angle indicates it will be close to the heart." Dan informs her as they get to work. "Medical equipment is in this van - get in there to find stuff to bandage the wound here then teleport her to Dr. Moss."
Purple lights keep darting around me as Adelaide keeps darting in and out of the van for... a lot of things really. I start to lose focus on them as I could see spots appearing in front of my vision. "Pretty..."
"No, Maeve! Stay with us here!" Dan shouts at me, but it didn't fully register in my head as I watch the light dance in front of me. It reminded me of all the festivals and celebrations we had at the Major Oak tree.
"Get her out of here, now!" That was the last thing I heard from Dan before a purple light encompasses me.
"MEDIC!" Adelaide screams at the top of her lungs whilst cradling me on the floor.
"Not... so... loud..." I meek out. My head was already pounding without her emptying her lungs.
I could feel myself being lifted onto a soft surface before the lights above me begun to whir by.
"Take her to the theatre- we need to get that bullet out."
"Maeve! Hang on!"
"Adelaide! We need anaesthesia from the van!"
So many people talking above me. I wish they would be quiet, I wanted to rest. It's been a long night.
"She's fading. Get an IV line in here. Stat!"
"MAEVE!" That voice sounded like Faye. I couldn't see her, though I could sense her. "Babe! I'm here! Stay strong!"
How... sweet...
The lights above me started to get darker as I could feel my head get heavier.
I think... I need some sleep. That sounded like a good idea.
The voices around me began to blur as I drifted off into a darkness. It was so peaceful here - I could hang here for a while.
All my senses were tuning out the outside world, as I slowly let my eyes close, deciding to rest my head.
