5 - Colt POV

"Rest in here for a while, Abby." I slowly pull the duvet cover over her as she settles down in our bed, snuggling into the fabric as far as she could to try and block out the world. My only response is a soft nod as she drifts off for a nap. I had brought her into what I had deemed to be our room, and we had been lying on the bed with her in my arms. She softly sobbed, overwhelmed by everything that has happened today - who could blame her? Finding out she was pregnant with my pup - I can't help a small smile grace my face still - but then to have her family, well her father really, play interrogation with me and Jason. I have never let anyone speak to me in that manner; Abby would be the only exception. In our world, you speak to the Alpha, any of the ranked members or their families, it was considered a challenge against the leadership. I would have ripped into him if he went further but he is Abby's father no matter what and I can't put her through anything else - she has enough on her plate. If he wants to be a jack*ss then so be it but I will try and keep the peace. Emphasis on the try. But... the looks he was giving me and his behaviour do peak my curiosity. Hence why, I am now walking to my office after leaving Abby in our room. I make myself comfy at my desk whilst I send out a mindlink. Jason. Nicole. Report to my office, please. On our way, Alpha. Nicole responds for the two of them. They were most likely both I the courtyard with the other warriors so they would be hear soon. Knock knock knock. "Come in." Both Jason and Nicole enter the room, shutting the door behind them before taking their seats on the sofa opposite me. "Everything alright, Alpha?" Nicole looked at me, a hint of curiosity and confusion on her face. "Actually... no." I rub my hands over my face. Today was supposed to be great but I currently feel drained. "It concerns Abby, or should I say her parents." "The dad." Jason chimes in. "Helen seemed nice but that guy gave me an off vibe." "So... not a good first introduction then I take it!?" Nicole side eyed me, you could see a hint of amusement in her eye. I gave her a rueful smile before continuing. "There is just something about him that doesn't add up. Parents are protective but the way he spoke to us seemed liked overkill." "Abby did say he wasn't a fan of strangers." "But did you notice the sisters? Adelaide and Maeve didn't seem comfortable around him either." I retort back to him, causing him to pause and rethink our interactions from earlier. "Actually... they seemed uncomfortable too. Like they wanted to get out of there in no time." "So the girls who have known him all their lives shy away from him. Why?" The more I try and piece it together, the more questions form in my head. "The girls know something about him. Something bad. And I have my doubts that they have told Abby about their concerns." "Have you asked them?" "Not yet. I was going to speak to them next." I lean forward in my chair, eyeing up the two guards sitting across from me as I rest my head on my hands. "But the information they give me does not impact the outcome of my decision." "What decision?" Jason c***s his head at me whilst Nicole raises her eyebrows. I take in a deep breath before I utter my next words. "I want you to run a background check on Edward Stanton." They both stare at me - eyes wide and mouths slowly falling to the floor. "You are not serious, right Alpha?" Nicole is the first to speak. "Does Abby know about your plan?" Jason, always looking out for Abby, shakes himself out of his daze. "Of course she doesn't. How do you think that conversation will go?" I snap back at him. "Hey babe, hope you are doing great and know how much I love you. Oh, by the way, I am looking into your dad as I don't trust him." "But you will have to tell her at some point?" "Jason, I will tell her as and when I feel like it is appropriate." I snap at him. He turns his gaze downwards and slightly bears his neck to him- the wolf indication of submission. I let out a frustrated sigh. I didn't mean to snap at him like that. "Apologies, Jason. It's just been a lot these last few days." "No worries, Alpha." "So how do you want us to do this, Alpha?" Nicole perches herself on the edge of her chair. Her notebook and pen in hand, ready to write down every task that was about to fall her way. "Nicole - observe from your wood hideout. See what he is doing and if there is any unusual activity going on and report back." I observe as she scribbles down everything I say, seemingly adding extra details at points - why she is a good warrior, she assesses and anticipates things others would not have considered. Not that she tells anyone what she writes in that book. "If he leaves, follow and observe from a distance. Again, report back anything suspicious." "He won't be able to piss without me knowing." She smirks at me. Good to know. "Jason, your job is the more high risk." His face was composed but a flicker of concern crossed his eyes. "Once the house is empty, and you are certain the coast is clear, I need you to enter the house and dig around for anything that is maybe... out of the ordinary." "You want me to break into Abby's house and dig for dirt?" "You know you are welcome in Abby's house, right!?" "By Abby and her mother, yes, but not her dad. Also, I only have been in when invited." He sits back and groans in his chair, running his fingers across his temple and pinching his brow. "What are you hoping I will find anyway?" "Not sure, but I am hoping it will help explain this." And I pull out a piece of cloth from the draw of my desk, unfurling it to present what was inside. "A silver knife." Nicole asks confused. "No." Jason interjects. "The silver knife Abby used to kill Zack. The one she found in her kitchen." Nicole looks stunned at Jason before turning her gaze back towards the knife. "The question that is in your head - why does the Stanton family have silver knives?" Bingo! "Households, in general, have aluminium or steel kitchen sets, not silver. So this?" I tap the knife a few times. "Is out of the ordinary." "May I take a look?" Nicole holds out her hand towards the knife, awaiting for me to give her a nod before she picks it up to examine it, turning it over in her hand. "Fine craftsmanship." "Any further questions?" "None that will give a happy answer." Jason sighs. I know this was a big task for him - having to spy on Abby's father whilst keeping it from Abby in the meantime. "I will tell Abby in due course so you will only have to keep this between us for the time being." Hoping that provides him with some reassurance. "You may leave." They both stand to bow towards me before exiting my office, leaving me in my temporary solice. We should tell our mate soon. When she has gotten over the events if the day. Right now, I need one more impromptu meeting. I mindlink my next group of people for questioning - The McGraw sisters. It's time to find out what makes their skin crawl about Mr Edward Stanton.
