My whole body shut down. I was fixed to the spot - my eyes unblinking as my mouth gaped at my father.
He studied me over, his face unreadable as he looked at me. "My little angel, so sweet and innocent. Oh, how far you have fallen."
He tried to take a step towards me, but his comment must have nudged something in my brain as I held up my baton towards him. "Don't. Come. Any. Closer." I managed to get out, though my voice was strained.
He just folded his arms and glared at me. "Remove your helmet so I can at least see you properly." He commanded.
A part of me wanted to rebel, but this was not the time or place. My hands trembled as they released the clasp, and I slowly pulled my helmet off, resting it in front of me as I remained seated on my bike.
"I'll hand it to Colt. He had a good idea planting his warriors in the trees. As you saw, hardly any of our guys got through."
"I'm sorry to hear about your losses." He didn't seem to car about then, though. He just shrugged at me.
"What I did not think he would do is put my daughter out in front for target practice." He locks eyes with me, a cocky smirk graces his face. "I was impressed with how you dismounted me, but, next time, I suggest you stay in the van."
"It was my choice." I spat back. "Colt respects me and the decisions I make. Something you seem to be lacking as of late."
"Do you really think you would get it now knowing who I am?" He retorts. "I'm a Hunter, Abby. A Hunter who kills people like your boyfriend and those two girls you call sisters."
"Why?"
"Killing is in their nature. Have you not wondered how your grandparents actually died?"
"They died in a car accident."
"That was caused because a feral wolf swiped their car off the road and into a tree." He snapped at me. I can remember how absent he was when he found out about his parents, but I was young at the time, so I dont have any memories of them. "And, from what I have heard, you have seen it first hand, and that was before tonight."
"You started it tonight! They were defending themselves!" He didn't seem to have a response to that. Good!
"If the supernaturals are left to repopulate, the world will turn into chaos. Did you know that the fight your beloved pack and Blood Moon had last month cost twenty-four humans their lives?"
"How?" As far as I could tell, there were no human casualties.
"Caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most were out for strolls through the woods and got killed due to being exposure risks." My mind drifted to when Ruben pulled me into the woods. "That sounds more like Blood Moon."
"Does it matter?" He shouts at me. "The point is, those humans would have been fine if wolves didn't exist. And they would be spending the evening sleeping with their loved ones right now."
"So, what now?" I gesture between the two of us. "What happens for the two of us?"
He points the gun he was using straight at me. "You are going to break your bond and get an abortion, as I have said before."
I laugh at his antics. "You are gonna have to shoot me for that to happen. And, considering how you missed moments ago, I will take my chances."
"I was deliberately missing - I didn't want to shoot my own daughter."
"Wow, you are changing your mind pretty quickly on that view." I smirk at him, but it falters as he lowers it towards my stomach.
"I can't allow a hybrid into the world. If I shoot you in the stomach, that should do it." My hands wrap around my stomach and I lie flat on the bike to cover my front as much as possible.
"YOU ARE INSANE!" How could he be thinking like this? "I'M YOUR DAUGHTER! I'M CARRYING YOUR GRANDCHILD."
"THEY WILL NEVER BE MY GRANDCHILD!" His hands shake as he looks at me. "Don't make me do this."
"Dad, please... " I pleaded with him as tears began to roll down my face, choking on the sob that was forming in my throat. "Don't punish them all for the actions of a few."
VROOM!
"ABBY!" The van had hardly come to a stop before Colt leaped out from the driver side and threw his body over the top of mine, shielding me from my father; the other two vans arrived shortly after along with the bikes.
"You are a sick and twisted man for aiming a gun at your own daughter." Colt glares at my father whilst I try and push myself as close into him as I could, feeling safer in his embrace.
"I have to do what is for the good of the people. The human race must survive." My father readjusts his aim so now he was pointing at Colt's head. I try to push him out of the firing line but he is too strong, and holds me low with my back pressed up against his front.
"I could take you out right now. Remove the Alpha and the pack crumbles into mourning. They would be easy pickings afterwards."
"That is if you can take the shot before we can." Austin sneers as everyone from the pack starts pointing their weapons at my father. He was outnumbered, and yet he still had a smug look of determination on his face.
"I can take my chances."
Whoosh!
A loud grunt echoes through the standoff as a caramel wolf snaps at the gun my father was holding. I recognised the wolf as Tyra, Naomi's wolf.
She pulls the gun free and nearly severs my father's hand off; it drooped and was gushing with blood. Snapping her teeth at him, she forces him into the centre of our group.
"Let's kill him!" Felix c***s his crossbow at my father's head.
"No wait!" I halt the group. Some stared at me with wide eyes whilst others had understanding settle on their.
I turn towards my father. "Just leave, Dad. But I never want to see you again. As of this moment, you are dead to me."
He steels his gaze as he walks past me to pick up his bike, not too fussed that his hand was hanging off. "You were dead to me the moment you were marked and conceived that mutant."
I watch his form retreat into the distance before crumpling back onto my bike, wailing in sorrow as my nightmares encompass me.
Colt strokes my back and embraces me as he tries to provide comfort whilst the others gather round us.
I hadn't even finished crying before I looked up and noticed something. "Where are Maeve and Adelaide?" I managed to meek out.
This time, Clarke had tears in his eyes as he tried to answer. "M-Maeve... she was hit..."
"NO! No! Please, no!" I panic.
"She is at the pack hospital now with Adelaide."
I push my tears aside and shove my bike helmet back on.
"Abby, you shouldn't be riding your bike right now." Colt tries to stop me as he puts his hand on the brakes.
I give him a death stare through the visor. "Either get on or get out of the way."
He mulls it over for a few moments but, with a few coaxes from the sound of my engine revving, he slings his legs over the back.
I don't wait for him to put the helmet on. I launch, full throttle, down the road. I broke every speed limit on route, but it still wasn't fast enough.
Maeve, please hold on.
I had already lost one family member tonight, albeit through his own actions, but I sure as hell wasn't losing another.
