This letter has been haunting me for a week.
Dr. Moss had called me into his office last week. It was not uncommon as warriors got called in for checkups every now and then. Mine felt like it was due. What I wasn't expecting was to be handed a letter.
"Inside are the results of the DNA test you requested." He had said to me. My hand had halted midair when his words sank in. This was it. This would be me finding out who my father was.
So why did it remain unopened a week after that conversation? The truth - I was scared.
Even if Abby said she wouldn't blame me, there is a chance she would harbour some hatred towards me. Not to mention if she does end up telling her mother, who I guess would be my step mum.
They wouldn't welcome me into their family. They couldn't, There would always be that tension because of the actions of Edward.
There were gentle knocks on my door. "Come in."
Speak of the devil, Abby, closely followed by Colt, entered the room I had been staying in. It was a few doors down from theirs since I was still Abbys guard, though I had been partly neglecting that since I got the letter - I spent most of my time running to try and clear the negative thoughts from my head.
"Hey stranger, long time no see." She comments as she flops down next to me. "Everything OK? Feels like we haven't talked since the move."
I just absentmindedly point a finger towards the bedside table. Their eyes follow it before they widen as they land on the letter. "Is that what I think it is?"
I nod in response. "I haven't opened it yet."
"Why not?"
"Fear of knowing the truth." Abby takes in a deep breath before clasping my hand. "Understandable."
"You open it." I look at her. "Please?"
I could feel her begin to tremble through our hold. "I... don't think I can either." I could see her eyes hold concern - if I was her half brother, not only would her relationship with her father have ended, but her parents' marriage could be if she told them.
We turn to Colt. He waits a few seconds to make sure of our choice before walking over to the bedside table. The letter is turned over a couple of times before he makes a tear down the seam.
Me and Abby cling onto each other as Colt scans the words. He seems to read them forever before looking at us. "It's a match. Edward is Jason's father." His voice was void of a emotion, not knowing how to react; none of us did.
We all stared blankly at each other. I had a half-sister, but my father was a Hunter who used my mum to try and infiltrate the pack. His actions resulted in her breakdown and death.
My eyes slowly blinked before turning towards Abby - she had the same blank look on her face as I did as she stared at the wall. Her mind whirring as you watched the cogs turn.
"Abby..?" I managed to meek out.
Something fired inside her head. She shot up to her feet and released the hold she had on my hand. "THAT B*STARD! HOW DARE HE CHASTISE ME FOR MY RELATIONSHIP AND YET HE DID THE SAME THING!"
She started to pass angrily back in forth as her hands balled into fists by her side. "DID HE KNOW HE HAD A KID WITH HER? IS THAT WHY HE LEFT? GOD! HE IS SUCH A HYPOCRITE!"
Colt starts walking towards her and pulls her in towards him, despite her initial resistance. "Breathe, baby. For your sake and our pup's."
"I have so many questions. He's caused so much pain, he has made our lives hell these last couple of months, and yet he did the same thing."
"I know, but right now I don't think confronting him is going to be the best idea. Think you need to give Jason a hug." Colt's word seemed to set off another trigger in Abby's head as her eyes snapped towards me.
"Oh god, Jason, I'm so sorry for my outburst." She flings her arms around me.
I bury my head into her shoulder as we pulled each other in close. "Abby, if there was any way I could take back what he did to your mum, I would."
"Thank you, Jason, but he should be apologising, not you." She softly states in my ear. We hold each other there for a few more moments before slowly pulling away. "You are a good brother, Jason."
I could feel the tears begin to well up on my eyes again. "Goddess Abby, you are setting off my emotions." I then side-eye her. "Like the annoying sister you are."
We both let out a chuckle before pulling back in for a warm embrace. "You are not only a brother now, you know." She takes my hands as we pull away and places them on her swollen stomach. "You are now a future Uncle."
I could feel the pup move inside of her slightly. Waves of love and protection washed over me. Before it was to protect our Luna and future leader, now it was to protect my sister and my little niece or nephew.
"What do we do now?" I look at the two of them. It was weird seeing them with the information I had just learnt. My Alpha was now my brother-in-law.
They look between the two of them. "We plan our next moves. We don't know if he knows that we are aware of this."
"How do we find out?"
"We get some feelers out there." Abby suggests. "My mum has invited us for Christmas dinner at lunchtime on Christmas day. She called it 'extending the olive branch'." Abby didn't look convinced of those words as she did air quotes around it. Neither of us could blame her as I think that ship has sailed between her and her father. State the obvious.
Ah, good to see you here as well, Apollo. Thought you were with your admirers.
I was and then heard you have a sister, so now I am all ears. Congrats by the way.
"We need to be prepared for if Edward does show up to the pub." Abby's voice brings my attention to the room.
Colt rubs his chin between his fingers. "Was Helen's invite opened to the rest of us?"
"Yes, it was, I just have to let her know numbers."
He nods to himself before speaking. "Good, then I think all the ranked members and their families, that includes you Jason." He gestures to me with a smile before continuing. "Will be happy to attend."
"And if he is there, we ask masked leading questions - try not to raise anymore suspicions than we already will have caused." We continue discussing a few finer points to the plan before calling it a day.
Abby grabs a hold of our arms and pulls both me and Colt into a group hug. "Whatever happens, this little family sticks together. Right?"
"Right." We both respond as we pull away. Colt clasps me on the back on final time before taking a hold of Abby' hand as they leave my room.
"Goodnight, brother." Abby calls over her shoulder.
"Goodnight, sister." I responded as I watched them close the door behind them. I took off my clothes and slowly clambered my way into bed. The letter now sat opened on the bedside table and I could read the words confirming that I had a sister in Abby.
Sister... that had a nice ring to it.
