31 - Adelaide POV

"You guys are witches. Why aren't you using magic to cook dinner?" Clarke whined at me, Maeve and our mum. "You can not beat cooking with love, Clarke." My mother, Kenna, replied as we continued cooking - Roast turkey with all the trimmings. "I'm more questioning the Christmas dinner in November." Faye asks as she works on the Yule log. "This will be the first Christmas where we are not with each other for dinner." Me and Maeve were going to spend it with the pack at the new packhouse whilst Mum would be attending the Coven banquet. "So, we are having our Christmas dinner now." "Why are people complaining about having another Christmas dinner? It's the best meal ever!" Maeve was always excited about Christmas. Actually, thinking about it, Maeve gets excited about anything. "Right, everything is cooking. I'll chuck these empty glasses out with the rest of the rubbish, and then we are set people." I pull off my apron and then make my way to the kitchen bins. "Need a hand, hunny?" "No, thanks. This one I will be using magic for." Purple light shoots out of my hand as the rubbish starts to float in the air. "You could just turn it to ash?" Maeve raises her eyebrows at me. "You nearly burnt down the house when you last did that." Mum side-eyes her in response. "That was one time!" "I'm not taking the risk." I stand at the doorway and use my magic to move the rubbish towards the bins. My eyes drift. A silhouette catches my attention nearby. Oh no. "Everything OK, Ads?" My mum comes up behind me. "Yeah, just... I'll be right back." They all look between each other as I march out of the house. I knew who the figure was, but what does he want now. "You have a lot of nerve showing up here after what you tried at the pub with Abby." I sharply point my finger at him. Edward just simply pushes himself off of my garden wall he was resting against. "Sorry if I am ruining your family Christmas." "You have ruined it before." "Fair enough." He really didn't care about what his actions had done to us. We were considered family once. Not anymore. "Tell me what you want so you can leave, and I can rejoin what is left of my family." I fold my arms and glare at him. I could just about make out his features in the moonlight, but he still had a menacing aura about him. "Ads, everyth- huh!" I could tell by the gasp that my mother had realised who was out here. Her trembling footsteps come up behind me, followed by another set - Maeve. "You come to seek forgiveness?" My mum was not one to hold grudges against people, but with Edward, this one cut deep. "I'm here to ask for a favour." He casually replies, hands in his pockets as he states between the three of us. "After what you have done to my family? Surely, we have done enough." My mum stands firm with me and Maeve either side of her, trying to feel like we had the upper hand, but we knew, deep down, we didn't. Situations like this made us feel so powerless as the Hunters had a hold over us. "Consider this keeping the peace between our kinds." He stood square as he faced us all down before he spoke again. "Give me a potion that Abby can drink that will give her an abortion." "NO!" We all shout in unison at him. We must have been louder than expected as soon after, Clarke and Faye ran outside. They stood stunned as Edward stood before them, back in his Hunter attire and facing down three witches by himself. "You have a death wish coming here with no backup?" Clarke muses. "You are either brave or a fool." "Oh, don't worry, nothing is going to happen to me. Right, ladies?" Clarke and Faye look between me, mum and Maeve. We all stood there, sheepishly looking towards the ground. "I can see you two also didn't follow my instructions to end your bonds." Edward looks at his fingers, unimpressed. "Looks like I will have to punish the Coven for that insubordination." Growls echo from behind us. Clarke and Faye were not bound like we were. They try to shift into their wolves, but a green light holds them still - Mum. "I'm sorry, my children, but we really can't face him." Tears began streaming down her face as she turned back towards our living nightmare. "I can brew the potion-" "Mum! No!" Me and Maeve protest as we stare at her stunned. She cannot do this to Abby. "It will take time, though." "What potion?" Faye turns to the group. "He wants a potion to give Abby an abortion." The second Maeve finished the sentence, we had to use all the magic we had to pin the wolves to the ground. "YOU CANNOT DO THAT!" "THAT'S OUR FUTURE LEADER YOU ARE TRYING TO KILL!" "Stop it! Both of you!" Mum snaps at the two. "This is something that is out of your hands." Edward sneers down at Clarke and Faye. "I will not allow your kind to reproduce, especially with my own blood." He starts to pace about in front of us, agitated. "Can you imagine that? After all the work I have done, my own blood helps create more of the problem I am trying to stamp out." "How could you talk about your own daughter like that? About your own grandchild?" "That thing inside of her is no grandchild of mine, no matter what Helen thinks." He turns to walk away from us. "I want it gone by Christmas, so you have a few weeks. Otherwise, prepare to face the consequences." Mum races after him as he stalks his way towards the forest. "AT LEAST TELL ME HE IS- MMMMMMHHHHHHHHMMMM!!!" "Mum!" We all rush towards her as she crumples to the floor. Green light restraining her in a vice as her mouth is sealed shut. Snickering can be heard ahead of us - no guessing who that came from. "Not long until Christmas, ladies. I suggest you get started." That was his final words to us before he disappears from view. "I'm gonna kill that b*stard!" Clarke growls as he looks to where Edward last was. Me and Maeve don't respond. We just collapse on our mother once the light releases her. Our sobs fill the air as the world bears down on us. Clarke and Faye do their best to comfort us, but they now only knew a fraction of the horrors that we lived. "What do we do now?" Maeve finally asks. "We do as we are ordered." Mum responds, pushing herself up from the ground so she was kneeling. "We can't. We can't betray Abby like that. It will break her heart; she has grown attached to baby Ash." My protest seem to fall on death ears as mum rises to her feet and makes her way back to the house. "Let's go. Dinner will be ready soon." Silence encompasses the field as the rest of us are left standing, dazed and confused about what to do. "Will you two really break our bonds? If he made you." Faye turns to us, tears brewing in her eyes. "No. I speak for me and Ads when I say we love you too much to do that." Even as she speaks, Maeve has a worried look in her eyes. "I just don't know what the consequences will be if we don't." No more words are said - Clarke and Faye pull us into an embrace before we sulk back towards the house. This Christmas meal wasn't going to be a happy one.
