Monday morning arrived with an uneasy silence.
Dark clouds gathered above the city, threatening another day of rain. Luna stood by the classroom window, absentmindedly tracing circles on the fogged glass with her finger.
The weekend had stayed in her mind.
The Wish Tree.
The ribbons dancing in the wind.
And Noah's promise.
"If one day life becomes so heavy that you feel like giving up... come find me first."
She couldn't understand why those words kept echoing in her head.
They felt less like advice...
And more like a goodbye.
She shook the thought away.
You're overthinking.
The classroom door slid open.
Students poured inside one after another, laughing and chatting.
Noah arrived a few minutes later.
"Morning," he greeted with his usual smile.
"Morning."
Something about him looked different.
His smile was still there, but his eyes seemed tired. He greeted everyone as always, joked with classmates, and even teased Mia for nearly spilling her coffee.
Yet every now and then, Luna caught him pressing a hand against his chest, almost as if he were trying to ease some hidden pain.
During math class, he suddenly stopped writing.
His pencil slipped from his fingers.
"You okay?" Sophie whispered.
"I'm fine."
He picked it up again, forcing another smile.
Luna watched the exchange from across the room.
He wasn't fine.
She was certain of it.
The lunch bell rang.
As usual, Luna made her way to the rooftop.
She expected Noah to follow a few minutes later.
He didn't.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
The rooftop door remained closed.
She finally decided to look for him.
She checked the library.
The courtyard.
The cafeteria.
Nothing.
Just as she was about to return to class, she noticed someone sitting alone beneath a large tree behind the school gym.
It was Noah.
He was leaning against the trunk, his breathing uneven.
His face was pale, and tiny beads of sweat covered his forehead despite the cool weather.
"Noah?"
He looked up quickly and smiled.
"There you are."
Luna hurried over.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"You don't look like 'nothing.'"
He chuckled weakly.
"I skipped breakfast."
"That's not true."
She remembered seeing him carrying a sandwich that morning.
For the first time since they met, Noah looked away instead of meeting her eyes.
"Liar," she whispered.
The word wasn't filled with anger.
Only worry.
Noah let out a long sigh.
"I'm just tired."
"You've been tired for days."
"I'm okay."
"No, you're not."
Silence settled between them.
The breeze rustled the leaves above their heads.
Finally, Noah spoke.
"Have you ever noticed how easy it is to hide pain?"
Luna frowned.
"What do you mean?"
He picked up a fallen leaf and turned it over in his fingers.
"If someone breaks their arm, everyone rushes to help."
He smiled faintly.
"But if something inside you is breaking..."
He looked at the leaf before letting it fall.
"...people only notice when it's too late."
His words made Luna's chest tighten.
She knew exactly what he meant.
She had spent years hiding behind the words I'm fine.
She had become so good at pretending that even her own parents had stopped asking if she was okay.
Without thinking, she reached out and gently held Noah's hand.
It was the first time she had ever done something so bold.
His hand was cold.
Far colder than she expected.
"You don't have to carry everything alone," she said softly.
Noah looked at their hands, surprised.
Then, for the first time since they met...
His smile disappeared.
"I know," he whispered.
"But some things..."
He swallowed hard.
"...are difficult to share."
Before Luna could respond, the school bell rang loudly across the campus.
Students began returning to their classrooms.
Noah slowly stood, brushing the dirt from his uniform.
"I'm okay now."
He smiled again.
But this time...
Luna knew it wasn't real.
As they walked back to class together, she made a silent promise to herself.
Just as Noah had refused to let her face her sadness alone...
She would uncover the truth behind the pain he was hiding—
