Bucket List

The sunrise at the beach became their favorite memory. Every time Luna looked at the seashell Noah had given her, she smiled without realizing it. She placed it beside the jar of paper stars on her bedside table, where the morning light touched it every day. It reminded her that happiness didn't have to last forever to be real. Monday afternoon arrived with bright blue skies. As soon as the final bell rang, Noah hurried to Luna's desk. "I have an idea." She closed her notebook. "Should I be worried?" "A little." She laughed. "That's never a good sign." He pulled a folded map from his backpack and spread it across her desk. "I found a place." Luna looked down. It was a map of a nearby amusement park. Her eyes widened. "You want to go?" "I've never been." She blinked in surprise. "Never?" "My parents always said we'd go someday." He smiled faintly. "...Someday just never came." Luna quietly folded the map. "Then let's make 'someday' this Saturday." His eyes lit up. "You mean it?" "Of course." He grinned like an excited child. "I've always wanted to ride a Ferris wheel." "What if you're scared of heights?" "I'll just close my eyes." She giggled. "That's cheating." That afternoon, they stopped by the bakery before heading home. The owner smiled warmly when she saw them. "The usual?" Noah looked at Luna. "I think she already knows us." Luna smiled. "I guess she does." The elderly woman handed them two warm melon buns. "This one's on the house." "Oh, we can't—" "You can." The owner smiled kindly. "I like seeing young people laugh." Luna thanked her softly. As they left the bakery, Noah broke off half of his bun and held it out to Luna. "You always share with me," he said. "My turn." She accepted it. "Thank you." Instead of walking home immediately, they wandered through a quiet neighborhood park. Children laughed as they chased one another around the playground. An elderly couple sat together on a bench, feeding pigeons. Everything felt peaceful. Noah suddenly stopped walking. "Wait here." Before Luna could ask why, he ran toward a small street vendor selling colorful soap bubbles. A minute later, he returned carrying two bubble wands. She raised an eyebrow. "...Seriously?" "Absolutely." "We're too old for bubbles." "Who decided that?" Luna opened her mouth to answer... Then realized she didn't have one. Noah dipped the wand into the bottle and gently blew. Dozens of shimmering bubbles floated into the air. Children nearby immediately laughed and began chasing them. One little girl accidentally caught a bubble on her nose before bursting into giggles. Luna watched the scene with a smile. "See?" Noah said. "Happiness is contagious." He handed her the second wand. "Your turn." She hesitated. Then, slowly, she blew into it. A stream of bubbles danced into the afternoon sunlight, reflecting tiny rainbows. For the first time in years... Luna laughed without thinking about who might hear her. Noah watched quietly. "There it is again." "What?" "That laugh." She smiled shyly. "I think..." She looked at the bubbles floating higher into the sky. "...I'm starting to remember how." As the sun began to set, they sat beneath the same large tree where they had once talked about losing the people they loved. Luna opened their notebook. At the bottom of the page, she added another wish. ✓ Go to an amusement park. ✓ Have a bubble fight. ✓ Eat street food together. She looked at Noah. "What else?" He thought for a long moment. Then he smiled. "I want to plant a tree." "A tree?" "So even after I'm gone..." He stopped himself, correcting his words with a gentle smile. "...so years from now, something we planted together will still be growing." Luna lowered her eyes, holding back the tears threatening to fall. She quietly wrote the next wish. □ Plant a tree together. Then she looked at Noah and smiled. "It's a promise." He nodded. "A promise." As they walked home beneath the golden evening sky, neither of them noticed the notebook fluttering in the breeze. The list was growing longer. And so were the memories. Each wish they added wasn't just another adventure. It was another reason to treasure the time they still had together.
