The Cage and the Fire

The city lights had faded into dawn by the time Ariana stirred awake. For a moment, the world seemed still.....the silk sheets warm around her, the gentle hum of her penthouse quiet. She could almost believe last night had been just another gala, another night of flashing cameras and forced smiles. But then her gaze fell to the envelope resting on her nightstand. The letter. Her chest tightened. She hadn’t slept much; every time her eyes closed, the words bled back into her mind: I see you. I can reach you. No spotlight will save you. Her hand hovered over the envelope before she shoved it into the drawer, as though hiding it would silence the memory. It didn’t. The soft creak of the door made her snap her head up. Damian stepped inside, broad shoulders filling the doorway. He was in black again....t-shirt stretched over a chest that looked carved out of stone, holster strapped at his side. His eyes swept the room before landing on her, sharp as always. “You’re awake.” His voice was low, controlled, but it carried an authority that grated against her fragile calm. “You don’t knock?” she muttered, sitting up and pulling the sheets closer to her chest. “I don’t need to knock when I’m responsible for your life.” He crossed the room with the silent efficiency of a predator, stopping by the window to check the locks. “From today forward, there will be changes.” Ariana narrowed her eyes. “Changes?” “You don’t leave this penthouse without clearance. Every outing will be vetted. Your phone will stay under surveillance, and there will be no private meetings, no late-night escapades, no....” “Excuse me?” she cut in, her voice sharp now. “You think you can dictate my life? I’m not your soldier, Damian. I’m not some… prisoner.” His gaze snapped to hers, cold steel against fire. “You’re a target. Last night proved it.” She climbed out of bed, her silk robe sliding over bare legs, but she stood tall, chin lifted. “Last night proved one thing.....that I can handle myself. I’ve been in this industry long enough to deal with obsessive fans, stalkers, paparazzi.....” “This isn’t about paparazzi.” His tone deepened, clipped with something darker. He stepped closer, and she felt the shift in the air, heavy and unyielding. “This is about someone who wants you vulnerable. Someone who got close enough to slip a letter into your hand without anyone noticing. If I hadn’t been there…” She froze. The memory of his hand on her waist, his body shielding hers from the crowd, flickered through her mind. Heat rose unbidden to her cheeks, and she hated it. “You don’t scare me,” she whispered, though her voice lacked conviction. “I’m not supposed to scare you. I’m supposed to keep you alive.” They stood inches apart now, the tension thick enough to choke on. His scent....clean soap and something rougher, like gunmetal....wrapped around her. His eyes softened for a fleeting second, but it vanished as quickly as it came. “You’ll follow my rules,” he said, final as a slammed door. Ariana forced a smile, sharp and mocking. “You think I’ll just roll over because you barked an order? Cute.” For a heartbeat, his jaw flexed, as if he were fighting the urge to respond. Then he stepped back, retreating to the door. “Get ready. You have a press shoot in three hours. I’ll be outside.” And just like that, he was gone, leaving her standing in the middle of her gilded cage. She tightened her robe around herself, glaring at the closed door. He thought he could control her. He thought he could lock her away and call it protection. But Ariana Starr had built her empire by never letting anyone own her and no bodyguard.....no matter how broad his shoulders or how piercing his eyes....was going to change that. Ariana hated the feeling of being watched. No matter where she turned that morning....sipping her coffee, scrolling through her phone, pacing the living room....Damian was there. Silent. Sharp-eyed. Unmovable. He wasn’t loud or overbearing. No, his presence was worse than that: he was simply… there. Always. By the time noon rolled around, she was ready to claw the walls. So when her driver pulled up to the photo studio later that afternoon, she made a split-second decision. Instead of heading straight inside, she ducked away, slipped on her oversized hoodie and sunglasses, and signalled for her private car, already waiting in the back alley. Freedom. The city air filled her lungs as she leaned against the tinted window of the car, a small smile curving her lips. She hadn’t told Damian about the studio tucked three blocks away, the one only a handful of people knew about. Her sanctuary. Within minutes, she was standing inside her private dance studio....walls lined with mirrors, sunlight spilling across polished floors. Here, there were no flashing cameras, no suffocating fans, no men with guns lurking in doorways. Just Ariana, the music, and the version of herself the world never saw. She shed the hoodie, letting her hair tumble free, and pressed play on the speaker. A heavy beat filled the room. Her body moved instinctively....hips swaying, arms carving through the air, each movement raw and unfiltered. For a while, it worked. For a while, she forgot about stalkers and bodyguards and rules that felt like shackles. Until the door creaked open. Her reflection in the mirror caught him first. Damian. He leaned against the frame, arms folded across his chest, eyes locked on her with an intensity that made her falter mid-step. “Enjoying yourself?” His voice was cool, but something flickered beneath it. Her chest heaved as she turned, sweat glistening at her temple. “You followed me?” “You think you can just disappear without me noticing?” He pushed off the door, slow, deliberate. “Your driver ratted you out.” “Traitor,” she muttered under her breath. Then louder, sharper: “I don’t need a babysitter, Damian. I need space.” He walked closer, boots echoing against the floor. “Space? You want space while someone out there is planning how to get to you?” She glared. “You can’t control every second of my life. This....” she gestured around the studio, her voice rising “....this is where I breathe. Where I live. You don’t get to take that from me.” He stopped inches from her, his reflection looming over hers in the mirror. His voice dropped, low and edged. “You think this is a game? My last client thought the same. Thought they could slip away, just for a moment. Do you know where they are now?” Something in his eyes shifted....hard steel giving way to a shadow of pain. Ariana froze, her defiance faltering. “What happened?” He exhaled slowly, gaze sliding to the floor for the first time. “They’re gone. Because I wasn’t there when they decided they didn’t need protection.” The rawness in his tone, the crack in his armour, caught her off guard. For a brief second, she saw past the walls he’d built....the soldier who carried ghosts heavier than his gun. Her voice softened. “That wasn’t your fault.” His eyes lifted to hers, fierce and unyielding again. “It was. And I won’t let it happen again.” They were close now, too close. Her back brushed the mirror as he stepped forward, crowding her space, not with violence, but with something more dangerous. His body heat seeped into her skin; the air between them thickened. Her heart stuttered. She hated the way her pulse leapt under his stare, how her breath hitched when his hand braced against the mirror beside her head. “Damian…” she whispered, unsure if it was a warning or a plea. His jaw clenched, every muscle taut. For a moment, she thought he might close the distance, might let the tension that sizzled between them ignite into something neither of them could take back. But instead, he pushed away, stepping back, his mask snapping into place once more. “Get your things. We’re leaving.” The spell shattered. Ariana swallowed hard, anger and something hotter tangled in her chest. “Fine,” she snapped, grabbing her hoodie. “But you don’t own me. Don’t think for a second that I’ll just bow to your rules because you growl at me.” He glanced at her, and though his face was impassive, his eyes burned with a storm she wasn’t sure she wanted to escape. “Then fight me, Ariana,” he said quietly. “But stay alive while you do it.” The ride back to Ariana’s penthouse was suffocating. She sat in silence, hoodie pulled low, arms crossed like a shield. Beside her, Damian was all steel....broad shoulders, clenched jaw, eyes scanning the dark city like he expected enemies in every shadow. When they reached her building, Damian swept the lobby with practised precision before letting her out. She rolled her eyes but didn’t argue. She was too tired. Until she stepped into her penthouse. Something was off. The lights were on, faint perfume clung to the air....but stronger than it should’ve been. Fresh. Her pulse spiked. “Damian…” He was already moving, gun drawn. Ariana stood frozen, her heart hammering as he disappeared into the rooms. Seconds later, he returned, expression grim, holding something in his gloved hand. A photograph of her smiling on a red carpet....except the face had been slashed with thick black ink. Her stomach dropped. “Oh my God…” “That’s not all.” He nodded to the coffee table, where an envelope waited. Ariana’s hands trembled as she reached for it, but Damian snatched it first. “No.” “It’s addressed to me....” “And it could be laced with something. Stay back.” She glared as he ripped it open, scanning the letter. His jaw tightened. “What does it say?” His silence was answer enough. Snatching it from him, Ariana read the words herself: The stage lights won’t always protect you. I can reach you where the cameras can’t. You’re mine, Ariana. Always have been, always will be. Her knees gave out. Damian caught her instantly, arms steady, chest solid against her cheek. “You’re shaking,” he murmured. “I’m not,” she lied, breath unsteady. His grip tightened. “I won’t let them touch you. Not while I’m here.” The promise burned between them. Their eyes locked....his were fire now, not steel. For one dangerous second, it felt like he might kiss her. CRASH! Glass shattered. Damian shoved her behind him, weapon raised. They ran to the balcony....its door smashed open, curtains thrashing in the night. The intruder was gone. But they’d left a message pinned to the glass with a knife: Even your bodyguard won’t save you.
