After the welcoming remarks of the Dean, Miss Suzuanne, we were told to go to our room. Dad went with me since Mom might still be in the room, arranging my stuff and yes, there she is, hanging my clothes on the mint colored cabinet.
"Hey," Dad said while putting his hands around Mom's waist.
I look around the room, I still don't want to talk with Mom. I am offended by what she did earlier, instead of standing for me, she wanted me to say sorry to those, ugh! I hate it.
My fingers swept through the desk placed in the corner of the room. It's quite long and by the looks of it, maybe all the three roommates can use this at the same time. There are three light bulb placed just above the table. I tapped one bulb and it lighted, I smiled when I saw the light flies inside, fluttering around the bulb. I kind of feel bad for these beings, but it's their purpose in life, to help the witches in their daily activities. There are already some books place neatly at the side of the table, someone might've been here earlier. The wide window beside the table lets you see a garden with a fountain in the middle that has a statue of a witch. It's the same statue that is used as the symbol of Vu'ay Academy.
I can hear some students walking pass the door until the doorknob unlocks, I turned around and saw a girl with straight auburn hair and gleaming forest green eyes. She smiled and paused by the door, examining what is happening inside the room which has two grown adults.
Dad laughs and raised his hand, "Hi! We're Rinnes' parent. We're just arranging her stuff because she's bad at it," he said then winks at me.
The girl nods her head, "Oh," she said then floated her bag above a bed, "Is this yours?" she asks with a soft voice. It sounded like she speaks fairy language since most faries have this soft and tiny tone when they chatter.
I shake my head, "No, the bed near the window's mine," I said while pointing at the bed where Mr. Choco is placed on.
She put the bag on the first bed near the wide closet with her eyes locked on my Mr. Choco, she suddenly beams a smile with her thin lips then walks toward my bed.
I just watch her with whatever she's planning to do with Mr. Choco while my elbow rests on the window frame, feeling the cold breeze coming from the forest beyond the garden. For some reason, it makes me feel sleepy. I was excited for my first day but I still had a complete almost 9-hour sleep last night. I ate dinner early then finished packing my spell books to have time rethinking my plan on acquiring the diploma. I hugged Mr. Choco tight between my arms while staring at my glow in the dark galaxy painted on the ceiling. I kept asking myself if I really want to be mortal while listening to the fairies' chatter outside the house. I even snorted when I realized that fairies don't exist in the human world. I read that so-called insects are the ones making noises during the night. I wondered whether their sound is as soft as the fairy.
"Is this yours?" The girl asks while holding Mr. Choco, brushing his brown fur.
I didn't realize my eyes were closed until I had to open them and blink for a few seconds to get used to the light.
"Yeah," I said then smiled.
She squished Mr. Choco out of irresistible feeling flowing from her eyes. I know she likes Mr. Choco, he's soft and fluffy and cute.
"Sorry," she whispered when she realized she's squeezing my stuff toy, "He's just so cute," she squeezed one more time and put him back to the bed.
Mom and Dad are almost finished unpacking my things, I can do it, to be honest, but I know they just want to stay longer with me. Since they were old students of the Academy, the Dean must've let them stay here for a while.
"I'm Green Harper, I use healing spells," she said then reaches out her hand for a shake. She looks like a fairy with her green dress and cream cardigan.
"Rinnes Hewitt, you can call me Rin for short. I use physical manipulation magic," I took her hand and went for a soft quick handshake.
Her eyes went wide as her mouth opens in shock, "Physical? Does that mean you can control anything? Like, you can make them float or move or crumble or invisible?" She asks while holding my shoulders.
I suddenly felt confused, can I do that?
Dad must've seen what I look like then clears his throat, making Green compose herself, "She can do whatever she wants with anything or anybody but no, she can't make it invisible. That requires a different spell."
Green and I nodded our head slowly as if I didn't know what Dad said.
"I see, then, Mr. Hewitt, you're our Air Technique professor, right?" Green asks then went to sit down on my bed, she's comfortable around us.
"Yes, darling, I am your professor. I'll teach you how to float yourself and how to fly on your broom. It's an ability that every witch has to learn aside from their spells."
While Dad and Green discuss how our class will go, I noticed a group of students walking in the garden. Seems like they already formed a group. If only I am that sociable, maybe I'm already jamming spells with some people. I heard them laughing and casting spells, making all the flowers bloom in the garden. They must've felt my gaze and the boy who cast the spell on the flowers looked at me and waved with a wide smile on his face.
I suddenly felt paralyzed not knowing what to do, I felt my face turning hot. I don't want to seem rude but I can't move. What should I do? Wave back? Smile back? Shout 'hey?'
As I was panicking on how to respond, I felt a hand on my shoulder, Green looked at me with a questioning face but she later saw the students and waved at them with a wide smile.
"Do you know them?" I asked her.
"Nope," she replied then went unpacking her bags, "Why?"
"Why did you waved at them?"
"'Cause they were waving at me--or you, it's fine to wave back. They are being friendly. Mom said it's hard to find friends here since most of you are competing with each other even with your family group," Green answered as she put her snow globe on a shelf.
Dad sighed as he closes the cabinet, they finished arranging my stuff, "That is one hell of a truth, darling. But remember, your family group will always stay by your side. You should not step on each other's faces," he said.
Mom nods in agreement, "True. So you girls should watch each other's back. Other family members are in a different class and they can't always run for rescue," she said while folding the box on her hand, then she looked at me with tired eyes, "Rin. A word."
I followed Mom inside the comfort room, glad that every bedroom has it's own since it's going to be a bother if we have to line up to use a single comfort room along with all the girls in the house.
She closed the door and sighed, her eyes do not seem tired when I looked at it closely, she cried. "Hun, I know I stood on the wrong side earlier, I know that. But you know that I don't want anyone hurting you, right? With what you did, they will only continue talking bad about you and I don't like that," she put her hands on my shoulder and taps her fingers softly on my back. "Sometimes we have to disregard the good to stop what is bad, okay?"
I pouted, "But they kept on talking trash about me. What are they saying that I am cursed? I am not. I am a freaking witch and if I can use curse spells, I will never curse myself," I feel a pressure on my chest, is this anger or sadness? I can't catch what I am feeling right now because I kind of feel bad if ever I am the reason why Mom cried.
I looked at her eyes with a frown, she closed her eyes and takes a deep breath, "You are not cursed, alright? No. You are my baby, my sweet Rinnes and nothing will change my little witch."
She always says those words whenever I feel bad. Aside from casting spells to make me feel comfortable, she repeats the words: "You are my baby, my sweet Rinnes, my little witch." As if I know who I am, there's a sense of security and assurance whenever I hear her sweet voice telling me those words. It gives me the waves of emotions that I have my own identity and that I am loved.
She wraps her arms around me and hugged me tight, "I will miss you, baby. Enjoy and have fun. But always be careful, alright?" she said then cuffs my face and kissed my forehead.
Mom's with an average height but here I am, still smaller than her for about two inches. I smiled when I sniffed her rose perfume, it made my heart feel at ease and my bad emotion towards her diluted.
"I will miss you too, Mom. I love you," I whispered and hugged her again.
As Mom opens the door, I heard Dad laughing with Green but there's someone else laughing with them. Mom smiled and walks towards Dad who's leaning on the cabinet. As I follow her, I saw a familiar face.
"Hey," she said with a shy smile. It's her, the girl who was being bullied earlier.
I suddenly felt the annoyance, and unconciously my eyebrow arched. Dad pokes my side, making me twist my body with an annoyed face while resisting to laugh from the tickle.
"Don't be angry with her, Rin. She has her reason, alright? Talk to her. Mom and I will be going now," Dad said and pulled me in a tight hug then kissed my head. "I hope you won't go home with wrinkles on your forehead. See you around." He said then messed my hair.
Mom smiled and kissed me on my cheeks before they left.
Now, I am left with these girls. Green and the bullied girl. I stare at Green, analyzing whether she likes the other girl and yes, she does. She's now trying with all her might to tie the girl's curly hair.
"Sorry," she said. I looked at her while Green's still busy tying her hair. "I know, you can slap me if you want or throw things at me. I didn't know we were family. But please listen," her voice softens.
The books on the table must be hers since she doesn't seem to have anything to arrange right now. She's just sitting in the middle of the bed while Green's taking a deep breath to finish tying her hair.
I sighed, I really don't have any right to get angry at her. She did not ask for help earlier and I should have minded my own business.
"You see. I thought you're arrogant because you want to show that you're powerful like those guys, you know, rude people thinking that they're doing someone a favor."
"I'm not like that," I said in a flat tone.
She lowers her head as Green finished tying her hair, "I'm sorry. I know you were only trying to help. I am sorry. If you don't want me in your group, I'll ask the Dean to transfer me."
Green laid on the bed while patting the girl's back, "Come on, Rin will forgive you. She's nice and she has a stuffed toy."
I suddenly snorted with what Green said, what's the connection of Mr. Choco with forgiving someone?
"See, I told you," Green said and turned to her side to look at me, "We're a group now. Who's the leader?" she asks. Her straight hair is almost covering her face.
"Uhm, Rin can be the leader. I know she's good since her Dad's the professor," the girl whispered, still her head is lowered and avoids my gaze.
"What's your name?" I suddenly spouted out of curiosity.
I must've sounded rude to her which made her look at me in surprise with a blushing face, "I'm sorry. I'm Willow Harisson, I use time and speed spells."
I sighed once again, do I look that intimidating to her? I mean, maybe because she did me wrong. "Don't take things too heavy, Willow. I'm fine. We're chill, okay?" I tried to soften my voice while staring at her with a face screaming that 'everything's fine.'
She smiled at me and clears her throat, "Okay then. I'll be sleeping on the middle bed, I see that Rin's sleeping on that bed," She pointed at the bed beside the window with a voice that sounds so energetic and confident, as if she's was not the girl who was sorry earlier. "Green girl will be sleeping on that bed and I already arranged my stuff earlier. I did not attend the welcoming remarks and went fixing around the room. I already checked if everything's working and don't worry everything's good."
Green just watches Willow walk around the room, showing us that everything starting from the lights to the comfort room are working just fine.
I suddenly felt lost, she seemed so afraid earlier and now she's overwhelming me.
Willow smiled at me and put one of her hand on her hips, her curly hair surely describe her- energetic and a bomb. "Call me Wil. I'm cool with everyone's who's nice. I'm glad to be in a group with you girls. And uh, I enrolled here because I just want to practice my spells. No competition with the top 1 so just do what you need and I'll support you."
Green sat on the bed and smiled, "Yeah, me too. I'm looking forward to the memories we'll make. I enrolled because I just want to learn new spells aside from healing."
Both of them looked at me, waiting for my first-day introduction speech. This feels awkward but I managed to speak, "Hi. Call me Rin or Rinnes, whatever. I... want to get the diploma and be a mortal."
Both of them were silent, I know they are asking themselves 'why' but they just smiled at me.
"So," Wil said while looking at Green and took a glance at me, "Dusana Family, huh... Good luck with us."
