Ryan’s POV
I stand by Abigail as she banters on to her staff about her upcoming birthday party. If it wasn’t for the likely chance that she is my soon to be mate, I would be somewhere else right now. Her voice is annoying and the way she tries to cling to me as if to claim me is annoying. Until I know she is my mate, she has no right to me. Sure, we have dated on and off in the past. Currently we are off, but in her mind, we never broke up.
As she continues to talk for close to an hour, I continue to sweep my eyes over the staff. My eyes always land on the slave girl. I try not to stare at her and must keep reminding myself to watch the room and glance at Abigail occasionally, to make her feel needed. Whenever she catches my gaze, she bats her eyes, and she continues to ramble.
I glance back at the girl. I stare at her a bit longer than I usually do willing her to look at me. She keeps her head down while everyone else keeps their heads up at attention. I want to see her eyes one more time. They are a light green. I swear I saw a twinkle in them when she looked up at me when we bumped into each other for a second time. Honestly, I saw her about a second before walking into her, but I wanted to catch her attention. She looked like she was in a hurry and now I understand why.
If it wasn’t for me, she might have made it here on time and wouldn’t have gotten into trouble with Abigail. I know that no one in the pack likes her because she is a killer. As I look at her, I cannot fathom all the hatred towards her. I know that I too must hate her to keep an alliance with the pack but her demeaner is timid and breakable. I feel that I could snap her like a twig without even trying. I hear my name as I am willing the girl to look up. I noticed her head bob a little but not enough to catch a glance of her face.
I look towards Abigail and feel her squeeze my bicep. To anyone else it would look like a romantic gesture. I know it was out of jealousy. She noticed that I was staring at the girl for too long and she disapproves of it.
Soon after she finishes and dismisses everyone except for the girl. I watch her demand the girl to stay. When she slaps her, all I can do is stand and watch as she talks to the girl. My conscience is telling me to step in and say something. However, the ringing of the slap continues to play in my head. I take pity on the girl for the slap. When Abigail punches her though I know she only did that out of jealousy. I begrudgingly follow Abigail with Malcolm not far behind me.
Malcolm is my beta. He tried to mind link me during Abigail’s talk to ask about why I did not scold the girl for bumping into me. I dismissed him with a glance and shut of the mind link.
We make it out of the back of the pack house into the garden area where her party will take place. She rounds on me and begins to complain about the girl. “I saw you staring at her. You know who she is and what everyone thinks of her.” She says to me. “She is a nobody and I do not want to see you near her again or even look in her direction again.”
I glare at her, “You have no right to tell me what to do. I am an alpha. I do not take commands from anybody including an heir. I will look at whomever I want.”
I see her flinch a bit as my alpha tone seethes into the last sentence. She straightens as she has been taught to do. “Since you are here as my guest, I will let you in on a rule we have within the pack,” she states to me matter of fact. “No one is allowed to touch her in any sort of romantic or s****l way. That rule was created by my father and even you will not go against his rules.”
She stands there and smirks at me as if she has won. I let her think that as I turn around and stalk off back into the house. I hear her calling my name and begging for me to come back as I go. I mind link Malcolm, “I am going for a run. Do not follow me. Check in with the pack for an update while I am gone.” Before he can reply I shut of the link and wander into the woods.
