Chapter 19

804 Words
Being in wolf form felt freeing. I was no longer Lana the weak omega who had to step on eggshells around every pack member. Instead, I was a strong independent wolf. I still ached over the mate rejection but now that I did not have a mate within the pack, I had no reason to stay within the pack anymore. Lana let’s not be rash now. You have nothing to travel with. I thought about it for a moment. I owed really nothing to my name, but Echo was right. As a lone wolf, I would be declared a rogue and always on the run. If I left right now, I would not even have the shirt on my back since I was in wolf form. Lana was right, I needed to go back to the orphanage and collect what little belongings I have. Before I went back to the orphanage, I took a longing moment to look at the moon. The moon itself is alone in the sky surrounded by stars but even the moon has a partner, the Earth. In that moment, I hoped I would be lucky enough to be destined a second chance mate. It was extremely rare and only meant for pack hierarchy, but technically I had beta blood within me so maybe I would get lucky. We should be heading back to the orphanage soon. We’ve only got a few hours before sunrise. Lana was again correct. I needed to be in and out of the orphanage quickly so I would have time to pass over pack lines without being noticed. A plus would be if Mrs. Hilden was dead asleep when I arrived. Once we made it close to the edge of the orphanage, Lana and I began to shift back into human form. It hurt as much as it did the first time, but it did not seem to last nearly as long. I knelt on the dirt for a few minutes to calm my racing heart and to relish in the cool air. I also had to mentally prepare myself for the possibility of running into Mrs. Hilden. I had no idea what I was going to do if that happened. I just prayed that it did not happen. Luck must have been on my side because as I entered the orphanage, Mrs. Hilden was no where to be seen. I silently thanked the moon goddess because as bad as it would be to be caught by her, I would not have wanted to be caught walking in extremely late and naked. I silently crept towards my bedroom to get dressed first and grab a bag to hold my possessions. I ended up having to use my old school bag. It would not hold much but luckily; I did not have too much to pack. I was able to grab a pair of leggings, a pair of jeans, three t-shirts, a few pairs of socks and underwear, and I wore my sweatshirt. From the bathroom, I was able to grab my toothbrush, my toothpaste, a bar of soap, and my shampoo/ conditioner combo. I was mentally preparing how I would leave the pack as I shut the bathroom door that I did not think about my current surroundings. As I turned around to leave, I felt a sudden pain cross my left cheek. The force and pain was so sudden that it brought me to a knee. “You ungrateful little brat,” Mrs. Hilden began to shriek. “I have done everything for you, and you repay me by humiliating a visiting alpha and the soon to be alpha at her birthday party. Then to top it off you missed curfew.” She began to look at me when suddenly, a look of shock and delight passed over her face. “And now you try to run away. Wait until Alpha Thomas hears about this. He will be delighted to finally get rid of your ass for trying to escape.” I have no idea what went over me but when I heard the word escape something snapped within me. She was talking to me as if I was the alpha’s personal property. I was no one’s property. I saw red and then blacked out. Next thing I knew, I was walking around the pack ground leading towards the border. Echo must have taken control because I have no idea what happened and how we managed to leave. We will talk about what happened at another time. For right now, we need to get across that border and sever all ties with the pack. As usual, Echo was right. I had to look towards my future. Daylight was approaching in about two hours, and I needed to hightail it out of the pack territory.
