“SO I’M LEAVING IN THREE days,” Alex says one night as they lie together quietly in bed. “What do we need to talk about before I start packing?”
“You tell Ali yet?” Paul asks. He knows she’s sort of part of the problem Alex is getting some space from, but it still has to be asked.
“Yes. A while ago. I tell Ali everything,” Alex says smugly.
It’s true. Alex does. While never being inappropriate, he definitely walks the line between cool dad and friend, and indulges their mutual brattiness in ways none of the other adults really approve of. That said, his honesty and openness with her probably goes a long way towards her not being screwed up by the constant tornado that is Alex’s own struggle with adulthood.
