Seraphina POV
I tried desperately to sleep last night, but between Eli's arms and legs using me as a punching bag in his sleep and the most uncomfortable bed I've ever had the displeasure of sleeping in. I might have gotten four hours if I was lucky. Now I need to rush home to get dressed for work. After that, I need to get Eli discharged and run him to the sitter before my shift starts.
When I finally climb out of bed, the sun is barely up. I'm grateful that Eli is still asleep. I'm hoping he'll stay asleep until I get back. I make my way out of the room and to the station to find my friend Asya, who is already on shift. Once I let her know that I'll be back in a couple of hours to pick him up, I head out to my car.
The ride to my apartment is quick since we live only a few blocks from the hospital. It isn't anything compared to my parents' extravagant mansion, but it's our home. Besides, it's not far from Thomas's penthouse. I want to swing by and apologize for practically accusing him of screwing my sister last night before I head back to get Eli. I'm showered and dressed in record time. I make a quick stop at the coffee shop that is halfway between our apartments.
He gave me a key six months ago. He has also hinted about me and Eli moving in. I know he cares about me and Eli, but something is holding me back. It's probably the fact that I haven't been able to depend on anyone in my life with any certainty, but I push that thought from my mind as I park next to Thomas's BMW. I grab the coffee and make my way into the building. Something like sympathy flashes in the doorman's eyes, but he makes no move to stop me. I wonder if Thomas told him about Eli. He has always been nice to us.
Once I'm in the elevator, I use the key to get it moving. When the door finally opens, I step into the opulent living room. It looks like it belongs in a magazine. I set the coffee down on the glass coffee table and turn toward the hallway that leads to Thomas's room. The minute I get close, the sound of moans and slapping skin assaults my ears.
My chest tightens and I debate about turning around, but I want him to know I know he is a f**king lying ba**ard.
I don't want him to wonder why I never take another call of his or speak to him for that matter. I reach for the door handle and take a deep breath. When I finally slam the door open, everything seems to happen in slow motion.
Thomas turns to look at me. His bare a** on full display between a pair of creamy white legs. A birthmark on the offending calf has my stomach twisting. He scrambles off my wh*re of a sister and toward the pile of clothes on the floor. Lydia simply sits up with a triumphant grin on her face. She makes no move to cover herself though my focus doesn't stay on her long. I expect this sh**ty behavior from her.
"Sera, please, this was a mistake. Let me explain," he pleads as he slips his boxer briefs on.
I throw my head back and laugh. "The only mistake was me trusting you. I expected this bulls*t from her because she has always been an evil c*nt but I thought you actually cared about me. Guess I should have known better."
"Of course, you should have known better. Nobody cares about a pathetic orphan. I have always been better than you and I will always be better than you," Lydia says smugly.
"Shut up Lydia," Thomas says, before turning back to me. "Sera, I swear to you, I didn't mean for this to happen. She is wrong. You know I care about you," he says.
"I can tell just how much you care by what I just walked in on. How long has this been going on?"
"I swear to you, it's the first time Sera. I meant what I said to you last night. I was only comforting her about Kael," he says. Like that makes him f**king my wh*re of a sister better.
I look back at Lydia, who looks completely bored. "What the f**k is wrong with you? You have a fiancé who was in a f**king car accident and your here f**king my boyfriend. Why the hell aren't you at the hospital with him instead of here spreading your legs like a wanton wh*re?"
"Unfortunately, Kael will live, but he won't be able to walk or have children. I won't tie myself to some cripple who can't produce an heir no matter how much money he has," she says, like she is talking about the weather. "So mom, dad, and I discussed it at the hospital, and we have decided I have a better option," she says, smiling at Thomas.
Of course, my parents encouraged her to go after Thomas when she decided she didn't want Kael anymore. The urge to throw up the few sips of coffee in my stomach is overwhelming. Thomas must realize my dilemma as he takes a step closer to me.
I meet his eyes again. "You agree with this?" He doesn't answer. He doesn't have to. "Of course, you do. That is why your here f**king her."
"I'm sorry Sera. I really am," he says like those words absolve him.
"I agree that you are. A sorry excuse for a man. I just hope when you finally realize exactly who you've gotten in bed with, you get everything you deserve. I'm just glad I found out now before Eli and I moved in." At the mention of Eli's name he flinches. I turn to leave, but Lydia's voice stops me.
"This is just more proof of how truly useless you are, Sera. No one will ever love you except that little ba**ard, but we both know he isn't the brightest," she says.
"Enough," Thomas yells at her, but my feet are already moving.
Her eyes shift from triumph to fear as I stalk toward her. Before she can get away from me, I slap her hard across the face. Seeing my handprint bloom on her cheek has the little girl in my mind who always had to put up with her sh*t doing a happy dance.
"Don't you ever talk about my son, you filthy f**king parasite. I don't give a damn what you say about me, but you keep your mouth shut when it comes to him, or I will shut it for you."
Thomas reaches for me worried I'm about to make good on my promise, but a look of disgust crosses my features. He immediately drops his hand to his side.
"Don't you ever touch me again with those filthy hands. Word of advice, since I don't see a condom get yourself tested. I don't use the word wh*re for no reason."
This time I turn and walk out without stopping. When I reach the living room, I grab the coffees and dump them on his expensive rug. Childish, yes, but did it make me feel a little better also, yes. As soon as I reach my car, I punch the steering wheel. Why is she so f**king evil?
I'm just about to put the key in my ignition when my phone rings. When I see my mother's name flash on the screen, I immediately know if I don't answer it she will just call the hospital and be rude to my coworkers. As soon as I connect the call, she screeches into the phone.
"You hit your sister."
"Hello to you, too, mom. Why, yes, I just found my sister f**king my boyfriend, but that isn't why I smacked her."
"Don't be crass Sera. I'm not surprised the boy chose your sister. She is better suited to his station in life. She also doesn't have an illegitimate child. You will come to the house immediately after you are finished with your little job. There are things we need to discuss," she says.
"I'm not really in the mood for family time, mom."
"Seraphina Ashford this is not a request. You will be here, or you will not like the consequences. You will also apologize to your sister the minute you arrive," she says, and cuts the call.
