Chapter 4: Flight and Fangs

593 Words
The heavy oak door click-locked behind Logan, leaving Seraphina alone with the crackling fire. For a few minutes, she sat paralyzed by the phantom heat of his touch. But survival instincts forged in a brutal medieval realm quickly overrode her racing pulse. She shed the heavy wool blanket, her bare feet hitting the cold timber floor. She needed to move. If this dominant, amber-eyed Alpha discovered the cosmic pull drawing them together was a fated mating bond, he would never let her leave. And if the dark forces hunting her tracked her here, they would slaughter his entire pack to get to her.She found her boots, pulling them on with frantic, shaking hands. She scanned the room, bypassing the front door. Instead, she unlatched a small, frosted glass window at the back of the cabin. The freezing mountain wind instantly lashed her face, but she didn't hesitate. She squeezed her slender frame through the opening, dropping silently into the deep, drifted snow below.Seraphina ran. The blizzard acted as a double-edged sword—it masked her scent, but the freezing whiteout blinded her. Her lungs burned. Her legs grew heavy. She had no idea she was running directly away from safety and straight into the pack's most lethal hunting grid. Two miles away, the storm was being cut down by a much harsher force.Enforcer Jax, the pack’s most ruthless executioner, was tracking a fresh scent on the northern perimeter. He was in his human form, wearing nothing but heavy tactical pants and combat boots, his massive, scarred chest entirely unbothered by the freezing snow. Jax lived for the hunt, his mind a cold, calculating machine.Suddenly, a vicious snarl tore through the howling wind.Out of the whiteout, a lean, fiercely beautiful wolf with fur the color of winter frost lunged at his throat. Jax didn't flinch. He sidestepped the attack with unnatural speed, his large hand flashing out to catch the wolf by the scruff of its neck, slamming its heavy body down into the snow. The wolf thrashed violently, baring a row of razor-sharp fangs, its eyes a wild, striking violet. It was Talia—a fierce rogue wolf from a radical faction who had been crossing borders for weeks, running from her own dark past."Yield, rogue," Jax growled, his voice like grinding stones. He pinned her down, his heavy knee pressing into her ribcage, his eyes glowing a dangerous, dominant red.The violet-eyed wolf snarled again, but a sudden shimmer of light passed over her form. She shifted back into her human shape right beneath him. Talia lay in the snow, breathless, her dark hair splayed against the white powder, completely naked and utterly defiant. She glared up at him, her chest heaving against his knee, her skin turning flush not from the cold, but from a sudden, fierce spike of mutual animosity and physical friction."Go to hell, Enforcer," Talia spat, her voice dripping with venom, even as her eyes darted to his lips.Jax’s grip tightened on her shoulders. The raw, animalistic friction between them was instantaneous. He hated rogues, and she hated pack law, but the sheer physical heat exploding between their bodies in the freezing snow was undeniable. He was supposed to execute her. Instead, his inner wolf was ordering him to drag her to his quarters and make her submit. Before Jax could speak, a desperate scent cut through the air—the smell of wild honey, ancient magic, and panic.Seraphina stumbled blindly into the very same clearing, freezing in her tracks as she saw the terrifying enforcer pinning the naked rogue to the ground.
