The building looked like nothing from the outside. An ordinary office building, the kind you walked past without seeing, dark glass and clean lines and no signage anywhere. We parked outside and I followed him to the entrance and watched him press a code into the panel beside the door. Then he pressed his thumb to a small black reader beneath it. The light turned green. The door clicked open. Inside, at a front desk, a man dressed entirely in black looked up when we entered. “Boss,” he said. Zane nodded and walked past him and we went through a door and into a stairwell. The air changed as we descended, becoming cooler, more contained, and my heart began beating faster.
