CHAPTER 5 (Pursue) “Hello Miss? Hey, are you okay?” I snapped back to reality when he waved his hand in front of my face. “I’m fine. Thanks for bye.” I hurriedly left him and he was calling out to me. s**t! This is embarassing. I hate this. I just pray that our paths will never cross again. I don’t want anything akward to happen. I hurriedly went to the café to do my serving routine. This day, I feel like the manager is really observing me and finding a hole so that I will not be hired but he should rather sleep at his office for I will be their last server. I smirked at that thought and started to fix myself. Took a serving tray and headed ooutside. Mariah is absent today because she said that her mother was sent to the hospital and so I will be handling all customers tonight. I just wish that everything will go smoothly and the customers will have patience because I can’t assure that there will be no delays in serving them. I wore my mask namely smile and started my job. “Hello Sir, what do you want to have this fine afternoon?” “Can I order you?” I was taken aback. He has this whip-like tongue but I should calm down even though his joke is getting into my nerves. “Unfortunately Sir, I’m out of stock so you can have the option that are listed in the menu book.” I was still smiling sweetly but I know that my eyes already spits lava. His smile faded away and soon he grabbed the menu book. “I need a coffee. Black, strong and no sugar.” “Noted Sir. Wait for a minute before I serve your order.” I hurried to take his order on the counter. Oh! I forgot to tell you that I am friends with the two baristas now – Jimmy and Jinny. And you are right again. They are twins who loves coffee. “Hello coffee twins. One black coffee please. No sugar, and oh! Make the temperature one hundred degrees Celsius.” “That specified? Who would want their coffee boiling?” asked Jinny who prepared the cup. “Some sick perverted bastard who needs to be taught some good manners.” I said as I glanced back at the man who was already talking to someone on his phone. “Owww! A war babe are you? tss! Those sick bastard doesn’t change a bit.” Jimmy gave me the coffee and I placed it on the tray. Just as I was in front of his table, the call ended. He put away his phone and looked up at me. “Enjoy your coffee Sir.” I politely said and bowed a bit. I hurried to leave and I covered on the column of the café and see his reaction. He picked up the cup and without minding the coffee and drank straight to it. As a result, my plan was a success. He had spit out the coffee for it was so hot. He looked around to see if someone catched him at that very amusing moment for me but embarassing for him for sure, and I think he was relieved when he saw that there was no one there. Well, I’m not done yet. I just need to pull some strings on his mind before he leaves the café. When he asked for his bill, I gave it to him. I smiled and talked before he left. “The next time around Sir, try not to be an arse and embarrass women. We hate that. The next time you do that and drink another beverage, I hope that it will be something exceeding two hundered degrees Celsius so it can burn your throat too. I won’t demand for an apology and I’ll call this quits. Okay? Do take care when you are outside. Remember that karma’s a bitch.” I smiled sweetlyy as I saw his priceless reaction. Oh how I love this new version of frankness in me. I have kept this inside for quiet a long time and now it’s coming to the surface and I love it. I love the courage of the new me. I proceeded to cleaning the table and I served a lot of customers too. one of them was a b***h but I just shut my mouth because I know that if I did not, then she’ll go nuts over my words. After the weekend, I woke up at five a.m. and fixed everything. Today is the start of my freshman day and I will check whether I got the scholarship or not. I’m bracing myself for the impact that the clerk will announce that I did not pass. I walked to the school and saw that on the bulletin board, there was some sort of post that the people were really looking at. It was something interesting and it caught my attention. “Who did the scholarship test without a mistake?” asked one girl. “I forget her weird name but I bet she looks like a nerd too or a geek,” the other one replied and they continued on their way. So that post is the result that I am looking for? I readied myself and went closer and closer to the bulletin board. I hold the paper with a trembling hand and uncovered it. I scanned the whole document from the bottom and I am losing hope as I can’t see my name on it. “I did not passed the test. This top one is Leeven, Havaianas… wait? I’m the top one?” my eyes seemed to fall from my sockets and I rubbed my eyes again to make sure that I am not hallucinating or something and I realized that I am not. Oh thanks God! I’m going to graduate college at this rate. No problems will come on my way. I smiled and ihaled deeply and proceeded to getting my COR over the counter of the Student Affairs. Like the most days at school, no classes on the first day but a school tour to memorize every sinngle building and classroom there is in the whole campus. Around two p.m. I went to the café again. I need to talk to the manager. I knocked on his office door three times and I opened it slowly. I saw him reading some newspapers and drinking a cup of warm water. “What do need?” he placed the newspaper on the nearby rack and faced me. “Sir, l need you to transfer me to the night shift. I am actually an incoming freshman student and I need to be at school from seven in the morning until five in the afternoon. I know that I sound so…” I was so nervous when he cut me off but a weight lifted from my chest when he said… “I understand. Education comes first before anything else. So I will put you at the night shift, anyway, the basis for the salary is the hour count so no problem if you come here the whole day on weekends or so. I am now hiring you as one of the servers. I have seen how you work and I say that I am quiet impressed. You know how to manage people and all that. I got a lot of comments that this branch of HM Café has an awesome server. Thank you for that.” “I’m just doing my job Sir. Thank you so much for understanding my situation.” He just smiled at me in response. When I came back, I saw Jimmy and Jinny arguing over something. There are still no customers as of the moment so me being as curious as a cat, I want to them and asked what was the matter. “It’s Jim. He’s being pointless and unreasonable at all,” Jinny complained. She was leaning on the counter while playying her mobile phone. “Says the one who told me that I should never see my girl again.” “Well, your girlfriend is such a b***h you i***t. And did you not know that currently James is screwing her?” “That was over Jin.” “You listen to me Jim. I don’t want you get hurt. You are my twin. I know what she is. Don’t you believe me? Then watch this.” Jinny let her phone slide on the marble counter top and there was a video currently playing there and I prayed for my poor eyes as that video robbed its innocence. A woman with a wavy hair and a tanned man was doing some kinky stuff… oh yeah, it’s beyond that. “Oh my gosh! Stop that video!” I said and Jinny obliged. I looked at Jim and I know that he is not feeling okay. “I told you, didn’t I Jim? She’s not worthy of your love. And here, Sunny has been head over heels for you. She’s a decent girl Jim.” “Please stop pushing that best friend of yours to me Jinny. I’’m tired of this s**t. I don’t love her and won’t ever love her. I still love Pam.” “Whatever you say Jim. I hope you won’t come to me one day and cry your heart out because you realized that you love Sunny and she never loves you anymore.” “Guys, you should not quarrel over this matter. Jinny, no one can force love. No one can dictate what way and whom will we love. Let it rest. Jim, I understand that love is not a simple thing, but please stay out of pain. You can move on and find someone worthy of your love. Anyway, a customer is coming.” I left them and thankfully, they are calm now. I faced the customers and the day went on just fine like nothing happened. The nest morning, I went to school again and this time to attend my classes already. I was sitting on the far corner near the window when someone took the seat beside mine. I looked at that person and instantly regretted as I saw his face. “Hi. It’s me again Miss. I can’t believe that we are classmates. By the way, can I get your name?” “I don’t want to give you my name. If that happens then I’ll be nameless. We don’t want that to happen do we?” he chuckled heartily when he heard my explanation. “It’s okay. I’ll still know your name when the teacher calls you. I just really want to be friends with you.” “Don’t befriend me Grey. I am not like the others and I live quiet different from the rest of the population here.” “That’s cool then. Are you a princess?” “You suck at joking. Me? A princess? Yeah right. Mop princess or chores queen.” “What’s wrong with that. You are a nice person.” “As if.” We fell silent when the professor went inside the room. He discussed about basics of chemistry and so on. When finally lunch came, I went to the school cafeteria and I regretted in an instant when I saw the prices of the foods there. Is the food here made of gold that even a glass of coke costs a lot? Unbelievable. I was about to go out when someone grabbed my arm. “Hey Miracle. I’m sorry to pester you again. Are you here to take your lunch?” “Nope. I’m here to check the menu and instantly regretted so I decided to go out and look for some cheap foods.” “Don’t you want to eat? The nearest restaurant is a few blocks away and it will consume time.” “I have no choice then. Five p.m. is near. I need to go back. Excuse me then.” I started to walk out and while I was at the soccer field, he was there again. He held my arm and run like someone who’s mad. I didn’t have a choice but to run too or else he will pull my arm away from my body. I gritted my teeth when we halted underneath the shade of a big tree. This place is not so crowded. “Hunger can make your brain shrink. You should eat something so that your brain can function well. Here, I just ordered burger and fries.” “Why are you doing this?” I asked him. I was still holding the burger that he gave me. He is a persistent person, I see. But why on me? “Ahmm… friendship offering. Don’t you want that? You’ll have a friend who’s sweet, caring, handsome…” oh gosh! His head is full of airs too. “Stop right there, I think a super typhoon is coming on our way. Super typhoon Grey, signal number 20.” “You just hurt my feelings.” He clutched his chest and acted like he is a wounded animal and he looks hilarious. “Your brain is not okay anymore and that’s why you need to eat Grey. Anyway, I don’t find it bad to have a friend so I guess you’ll be my first friend then.” “For real? First friend? Where were you the past decades?” “In a hellhole. Anyway, don’t ask about that. It’s all in the past and now I’m moving on like nothing happened. It’s Havaianas Miracle Leeven by the way.” I introduced myself to him and took his hand for a handshake. “Wait… you are the top one scholar right?” he was pointying me and his eyes shouts shock. “I guess I am.” I shrugged and took a bite on the burger. “Hell no! I have a cool and brainy best friend now!” huh? Best friend? Is he talking about me? “Tone down you i***t. As far as I know, I am not your best friend.” “I just leveled it up and you can’t do anything to stop me. Anyway, where do you live?” he is so talkative for a male and now, I really doubt if he really is and you know what I mean. “Right now? At an inn.” “Eh? Are you a tourist?” “No. I don’t have a house.” I replied bluntly. “Do you want me to recommend you some place to stay? You’ll love it there.” “Is it low cost?” “Well, we can ask her about that. I have a grandma who lives a few blocks from here and she needs someone who will rent her rooftop room and take care of her plants when she’s away. Do you want that spot? I can tell her to give it to you.” “I’ll check that on weekend. I definitely should. Anyway, thanks for the lunch. I’ll surely pay you sooner. And please do tell me the price of the monthly rent. I still need to talk to myself about that. You know, internal dispute.” I started to walk and he hurried to follow me. I still need to go to my classes. ***
