The sun was shining brightly over the large sports field of Bridgewater High School. Students gathered around as different sports teams practiced after school.
Jay stood near the field with Marcus Reed.
“So this is where the football team practices,” Marcus said while pointing toward the players running across the field.
Jay watched them closely. He had always liked football, but he had never played on a big school team before.
“You should try out,” Marcus encouraged him.
Jay hesitated. “I don’t know… those players look really good.”
Before Marcus could answer, someone walked toward them.
It was a tall boy with a confident expression.
“You’re the new kid, right?” he asked.
Jay nodded. “Yeah, my name is Jay.”
The boy crossed his arms.
“I’m Dylan Cross,” he said. “Captain of the junior football team.”
Marcus quietly leaned toward Jay and whispered, “He likes to show off.”
Dylan looked at Jay’s shoes and smirked.
“You think you can play football here?” he asked.
Jay stayed calm. “I’d like to try.”
Dylan laughed a little. “Good luck with that.”
Just then the football coach blew his whistle loudly.
“All students who want to try out for the team, come here!” he shouted.
Marcus pushed Jay gently forward.
“Go on,” Marcus said. “You’ll do fine.”
Jay walked toward the group of students standing on the field.
Among the students watching from the side were Mia Smith and her best friend Lily Carter.
Lily was holding a camera.
“I like taking pictures of school events,” she said.
Mia looked toward Jay.
“That’s the new student from geography class,” she said.
“He’s trying out for the team,” Lily replied excitedly.
On the field, the coach handed a football to Jay.
“Let’s see what you can do,” the coach said.
Jay took a deep breath.
The coach blew the whistle.
Jay ran forward with the ball while two other students tried to stop him.
He quickly moved past one player and then another.
Marcus shouted from the sidelines, “Go Jay!”
Even Mia and Lily started cheering.
Just before reaching the goal line, Dylan ran toward him and tried to block him.
For a moment, everything felt slow.
Jay quickly changed direction and ran around Dylan.
Then he crossed the line.
The coach blew his whistle again.
“Nice move!” the coach said.
Some students clapped.
Dylan looked surprised but said nothing.
From the sidelines, Mia smiled.
“Looks like Bridgewater High has a new football player,” Lily said while taking another picture.
Jay walked back toward Marcus, breathing heavily but smiling.
Marcus laughed.
“I told you,” he said. “Your first day at Bridgewater High just got a lot more interesting.”
Jay looked across the field and noticed Mia watching him.
She waved.
Jay waved back.
He didn’t know it yet, but his journey at Bridgewater High School was only beginning.
